All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

Before making or posting in a thread, read the Trope Repairing Guidelines to see whether a thread you're considering making actually should be made, as well as what is and isn't allowed in an open thread.

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is). The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

~selkies — I moved your TRS Queue entries from the section for listings that are on hold back to the Queue itself since they were marked on hold due to your hiatus, but they no longer need to be on hold now that you're back.

I'm wondering if anyone would be against moving them to the top of the Queue, because they probably would have been at the top (just with the "on hold" note) if we didn't have a separate section for entries that are on hold (we used to leave entries that were on hold in the Queue, and made a section for them because having entries that are on hold lingering at the top made the Queue a bit harder to read). I just don't want to do that unilaterally.

Hmm. On one hand, you’re right, but I don’t want it to look unfair.

What do you think ~selkies ?

I didn't want to make it look unfair either, which is why I asked for feedback first. (Though we've already skipped ahead with the three most recent threads, so I'm not sure what we did with those threads is much different from what we'd do by moving the other entries to the top.)

It's fine by me if some people want their threads to be first, especially if they were active and waiting for a slot to open. But if others don't object, I'd like to stay at the top, bc all of my OPs are easy to deal with.

It was originally a redirect for With Great Power Comes Great Insanity; it was seemingly turned into a disambig to include Drunk with Power, which can also be described as "power corrupts". It was never a trope, so I don't assume TRS was involved.

Re: ~FSharp

Posting here to not off-topic a trope discussion

the percentage of correct wicks in the wick check should still be roughly the same as the percentage of correct wicks for the trope as a whole

Nowhere does the linked Admin/ page say anything about "correct wicks".

either the square root of the total number of wicks or 50, whichever is larger
sqrt of 496 is 22, which is lower than 50. So correctly, 50 were checked. It doesn't say 22/30/50 should be the correct use.

[up] There's no reason for the How to Do a Wick Check page to say 22/30/50 should be the correct use, because I've only determined that there are about 30 wicks that use the Amusement Park trope correctly. I can't say the same for other tropes.

[up] Then I don't see how the wick check was done improperly. The policy asks for 50 any wicks as representative sample, and the wick check has them. The wick check has 41 wicks are correct, so I'm really missing where 30 keeps coming from.

#8990: Jul 15th 2024 at 12:39:12 AM

[up] In the wick check, 41 wicks are "amusement parks exist," but the first sentence of the Amusement Park page is "Amusement parks are popular locations for confrontations, probably because there's so much neat stuff to play around with." So, the trope must really be about heated confrontations/chases taking place in an amusement park, which means it has a Non-Indicative Name and the 41 "amusement parks exist" wicks are misuse. 3 wicks correctly use the trope to mean "heated confrontations/chases taking place in an amusement park."

There was no "correct use" to begin with. It's unclear whether it was intended as an "amusement parks are common locations for confrontations" or that "amusement parks exist in fiction and btw they sometimes happen to be places for confrontations."

Yeah, not all wick checks have to classify misuse, especially when the definition of the trope is unclear. Sometimes the split is just between "usage A" and "usage B", or like in this case, "chairs" and "possible tropeworthy use".

I don't think Amusement Park was ever intended to be a "confrontation at an amusement park" trope. It's just another case of "it was 2007 so the trope description is weird."

[up][up][up] It's clear to me. Why else would this bullet be in the trope description?

  • The roller coaster gives our hero a chance to show off their reflexes.
Or this sentence?
The amusement park is often abandoned or just closed for the night, which is an easy way of making things creepier, but it may also be open for business with the villain hiding in the crowd.
Notice how it doesn't say "If there's a confrontation..." anywhere. The confrontation is always assumed to be happening.

It sounds very generalized to me. Like it's a place where many things happen. Ok, and? Many things happen everywhere, what's special about amusement parks? Nothing? Oh.

Like they listed things that happen there and left us guessing what's the trope intended use is. It's only listed on settings which implies this was meant as a general, broad, location trope.

Anyone could've added it if that's truly what they thought the trope was meant to be. Except most people are confused which is why we have to fix it in TRS.

I believe F Sharp's point was that, if the ''proportion" of references in the usage check is the same as in general usage, the three "confrontation" references in the check would extrapolate out to 30 in general usage.

That being said, looking at the oldest copy in the Internet Archive, the first three examples (at a time when examples tended to be listed in the order they were added) seem to toe the line between describing (really implying) confrontations and just being "amusement parks exist". It does seem to have possibly gone through YKTTW but that seems to have been lost.
