All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

How would I go about building an argument that a trope is People Sit on Chairs? What would I look for in a Wick Check, if one is necessary?

You'd look for examples that do not mention any story important thing. That said, a PSOC claim usually is based on the trope description, not on the result of a Wick Check.

If RNG lands on it, then yes. It shouldn't, but yes.

Wick checks are sooooooooooooooooooo tedious. I hope we get an easier way to check for misuse in the future.

20 wicks isn't that much, and sqrt of a number makes it a lot easier.

Yes, but the square root still a lot, especially with tropes with hundreds or thousands of wicks. At least it's not like trope renames where you have to change all the wicks.

QOL improvement: number the wicks on the "related to" tab.

Quality of Life. Little things like, well, numbering the wicks on the related tab. Not necessary, but nice to have.

Move Yandere to Psychotic Lover to stop with Japanese terms for general tropes, like how Kuudere was moved to Sugar-and-Ice Personality in 2011?

And Dojikko to Cute Clumsy Girl, as said in TRS Wick Cleaning?

Those need threads and actual problems. This is for general stuff about the forum itself.

There was a TRS to cut Gideon Ploy, IIRC, but it hasn't been cut?

I’m wondering about what the criteria are for getting threads open these days. I feel like lately threads have been opened indiscriminately regardless of the quality of the issue (wick check, how clearly the problem is explained, having proposed solutions, etc). And all threads seem to be opened a very long time after they’re created, so that the op usually forgets about them (again the quality of op seems irrelevant here).

What’s the deal? This seems very inefficient to me. I’ve also heard a lot of complaints about the TRS not working, and I feel like I increasingly see people trying to get around it.

(Ok, I’m also salty that my thread for Man In White didn’t get opened.)

I think the threads that do get opened are opened because a moderator happened to notice them.

The Trope Repair Shop doesn't seem to be working because threads are very rarely getting opened, and even when they do, they take a long time to reach a conclusion. Take the thread for The Man Is Sticking It to the Man, for example. It saw very little opposition on any of its pointsnote , and yet it took over a month to decide on what to do. A similar thread in Image Pickin' would be starred and archived in a few days, tops.

I noted here that the forum seems very undermoderated. We could probably stand to get a dedicated mod for the TRS, though I'm not sure how we would go about asking for one.

A part of what I would like to do is go through the older threads and complete the actions slated to be taken. Everythings Squishier With Cephalopods and Jerkass Façade/Hidden Heart of Gold in particular could use some help.

The deal with the thread opening is that there is a fairly large amount of hollers of this nature and a lot of people don't work on threads that have already some sort of conclusion, which makes us reticent in opening any. I do try to keep some kind of clocking schedule going but I have non-TV Tropes obligations as well that don't leave much time for work here.

I dunno, I think there is a feedback loop between low participation and low thread completion rates that I don't know how to break.

As I have said, starred threads probably often stall because nobody wants to change 100 wicks to the new trope name.

Shouldn't the starred threads be passed to Projects: Short Term?

Um… all of them? It's is what PST is for, according to the sticky:

Its primary purpose is to facilitate the execution of actions decided by the Trope Repair Shop without clogging up that forum with unfinished work after all the important decisions have been made. Other projects may be started here, but generally only after some decision has been reached elsewhere, such as in Ask The Tropers or Wiki Talk.

Well, the idea is to get the threads out of the TRS so that they don't clutter up the forum. If you don't think a thread has quite concluded on a course of action yet, you don't need to pass it.
