Before making or posting in a thread, read the Trope Repairing Guidelines to see whether a thread you're considering making actually should be made, as well as what is and isn't allowed in an open thread.
This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.
Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:
- If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term
. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
- If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is). The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
- You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
- Consult the Wick Check Project thread
to collect evidence if you need help.
- Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

I'm honestly surprised at how quickly that thread closed. It helped that the other crowner options were too extreme to gain any consensus, but normally my threads stick around for a while.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallIt worked. taken, thx.
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)You know, I thought of something. If adding options to a crowner after it's been hooked won't work, maybe we should post an ATT notifier when a TRS thread opens in addition to when it has an active crowner so that people can give suggestions for the crowner.
...I actually like that idea! It would bring in some more voices to TRS before decisions are made, and it could maybe help bring in some interesting ideas that could help determine their fate. It would also make the TRS process more transparent to the broader troperbase, and would help prevent all the claims that we don't include people in the process. I'm all for it.
Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI'm on the fence about that. I'm all for getting more people to join TRS discussions, but I don't want to frame it as having them come "just" to give crowner options. Ideally, all crowner options should be things that are discussed ahead of time. Late additions aren't just bad because they don't have as much voting time, but because they're usually undiscussed and off-the-cuff, and we don't want people to come up with out of pocket solutions. So yes, we probably should post about TRS threads after they're unlocked, but it has nothing to do with the "late crowner option" issue.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallSee, I like this idea not for adding crowner options, but for getting more TRS voices in general.
Here's what I'm thinking. Imagine "Trope A" is about to be sent to TRS. Right as the thread opens, someone could announce in TRS something like this:
This would help get some more voices in TRS, and some more input in general. My rationale has nothing to do with crowners, and everything to do with getting more voices in TRS.
Is anyone else seeing this?
EDIT: Oh shit that's literally what you said. I apologize, I'm not myself tonight.

Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallIt's cool.
But yeah, my main point is... Good idea, something we should be doing, but the crowner issue is a separate beast.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallIf people want to see which TRS threads are open then they should try to check TRS every day. Crowner advertising is fine but we probably can't afford to bump down more urgent issues like reporting problematic tropers.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.A great (coding based) solution would be if there was a separate "announcement" query forum. Not just for things like TRS threads, it could also discuss things like promotions, technical updates, glitches, and the newsletter. But that would require an entirely new area get made.
But you're right that the best way to stay informed is to take the initiative.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallThe Tarot Motifs IP has been in a pickle and I think I know why. Many examples on trope's page don't mention "motif" at all, instead mixing Tarot Troubles (which even says "themes are lifted from the Tarot but no actual reading takes place in the plot, that's Tarot Motifs"), DeathDealers with a themed weapon but not design/character, Fortune Teller using tarots with no Foreshadowing, tarot MiniGames, or work simply featuring literal cards. It just needs the wicks checked, or a cleanup.

The point of the proposal is to get more people involved in TRS who do not know TRS exists. I'm sure there are plenty of tropers who have never heard of (or know little about) TRS, and the idea is to get them involved.
Double post, I know, but Big Bra to Fill's thread may close soon, and in a few days so will One Last Fling, so get your OPs ready for some incoming slots.

I took care of it, so a slot's open now.
Wonderful! Thanks a ton.
Since Schoolgirl Lesbians hasn't closed yet, your chance is now ~Graf von Tirol!
Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI think adding banners to relevant trope pages immediately is the best way to get people involved in TRS. That's how I got involved, and it ensures that people know about the trope they're talking about.
I just don't want to use ATT for too many kinds of announcements because it might push down matters that can usually only be publicly addressed on ATT, like vandalism.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I think the crowner announcements we do on ATT is enough personally. I think we are doing everything we can to bring people to TRS. I don’t see how filling ATT with even more TRS announcements is going to bring more traffic(I don’t think most casual readers and editors pay attention to ATT anyways). If anything, people will probably tired of seeing them and they will drown out more pressing issues like mightymewtron pointed out.

Macron's notes
Not wanting there to be too many ATT announcements is why I bumped my previous query for the Wiki Tropes thread's current crowner instead of posting a new one, since there were already other queries for the same thread, and I figured a completely new query would be better saved for the next runoff crowner.
Edit: I set some of the old ones to private to keep them from cluttering search results.

I see everyone's points. I will concede.
Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI think I'm going to let the Wiki Tropes thread just sit there until after the new year. Reducing the crowner size didn't do much to increase activity, so I have a feeling that the holiday season is affecting activity this time.

I got a rock for Halloween.Yeah, that's true. We don't want to use so many announcements that people get tired of them. We already tag the trope pages, and those are more likely to reach the people who give a shit about the trope one way or another. What's important to remember to is that as active as ATT is, the people who frequent it are usually the same type of people who frequent the left-side forums, AKA, the people who are already more likely to be involved in projects and TRS. It's not a perfect 1:1 but we can all agree there's overlap. The tropers who never visit that part of the site would still not know anything, but if they follow the trope page...
Unfortunately there will never be a way to reach as wide an audience as possible. The bulletin, for example, doesn't seem to attract attention due to how small it is. Even when I know there's a bulletin up, I still end up missing it unless I'm actively looking at it. So that doesn't work, and it's also unfortunately the only way to attract everyone on the site. Unless we start doing something like only choosing TRS-tagged tropes for daily trope or something, I'm out of ideas. It would be cool if the bulletin itself had a spot on the front page, but that's coding.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallIt appears Sandbox.Unfortunate Names was not swapped with Main.Unfortunate Names. The former is an improvement.
And Gradual Grinder wasn't turned into a redirect to Damage Over Time (plus the TRS discussion banner is still there), yet TRS Wick Cleaning still says to move wicks from the former to the latter.
I think turning Gradual Grinder into a redirect and swapping in Sandbox.Unfortunate Names would be a good idea, since there was consensus behind them even though their threads closed.
Edit: I removed Gradual Grinder's banner.
