Got the gameboy skin for Tetris 99. Wasn't too hard really, but damn that battle royale nonsense frustrates me. Wish they'd give us a traditional VS mode... Hopefully it's in one of the DL Cs.

I missed the part where that's my problem.

[up] Yep, the DLC adds an offline endless mode.

nVidia expects gaming sales to increase significantly in the fall.

This has lead to increased speculation of a new Switch SKU, especially since their gaming revenues have fallen.

Yeah I got that, I'm just hoping they'll also add a 1v1 online mode. It feels much more fair than 99, you don't have to worry about badges or who to target. Just who's better at Tetris.

I missed the part where that's my problem.

Some news from Marvelous in Japan: Expect Rune Factory 5 sometime in the next fiscal year (so, start of April 2020 to end of March 2021). And for those of us in the west, it will likely be longer, unless they manage a simultaneous worldwide release...

[up][up] Don’t Tetris games like that exist already? I feel like complaining about the battle Royale mode of a game that was explicitly sold as “Tetris as a Battle Royale” is counter-intuitive.

Sure they do, but not on Switch. Well, bar Puyo Puyo Tetris, but that has a completely different game as well and (IMO) annoying characters. Anyway, I don't think it'd be a much harder addition than marathon mode, and I'd gladly pay ten bucks for it.

Nintendo's Tumblr confirmed that Astral Chain can be purchased by using a Game Voucher. (It's not listed as such on the official site right now.)

It also says that it's a valid purchase for a voucher on the eShop page, as I noted a couple days ago.

Any game on the Switch that's visually spectacular? I can only think of Xenoblade 2 & Mario Odyssey.

I would say Smash Ultimate, but I feel like that's kind of cheating.

I really like the art direction of Yoshi’s Crafted World, but that’s more of a “creative style” thing than a “push the system to the limit visually” thing.

[up][up]

I didn't count BOTW because it's already on the Wii U. Not I'm actually using any of examples for argument but I feel like no one would count BOTW because (to my knowledge) there isn't that much of a difference between BOTW on the Switch & Wii U. That & BOTW looks great on it's merits than anything else.

[up]

Yes, I was looking for more examples “push the system to the limit visually” & I'm drawing a lot of blanks right now.

In general, Nintendo knows its consoles aren't graphically all that competitive, so they generally try to avoid the issue by going for art styles that simply don't rely on it. Breath of the Wild is a good example.

Yeah, in general their approach to graphics has always been to focus on the art direction and stylization over using processing power to make things more realistic or super-detailed. Which honestly helps in the long run, since it helps keep older games from feeling dated.

[up]I pretty much agree in this notion.

Realistic looking games tend to age worse when it comes to visuals.

I also like that Nintendo doesn't put much emphasis on graphics.

To be frank the only time I've thought were outdated were N64 days. Other than that I never said "Man, these graphics did not age well."

I know in terms of graphics Wind Waker aged better than Twilight Princess, but I've never thought Wind Waker was superior in terms of designs & such.

I forgot when they announce this (last year I think?), but wasn't there supposed some huge 3rd party support? It doesn't feel like that's the case right now. Not that I'm not used to it by now.

[up][up]I wouldn't say exactly that they don't put much emphasis on graphics, unless you're using "graphics" to refer specifically to the level of detail in the rendering. They do put some emphasis on the graphics, it's just that they focus more on the artistic design than on showing off processing power with it.

[up]With Lo Z it's kind of a weird case, because for a while they were basically oscillating between a "realistic" art style (Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess) and a more cartoony art style (Wind Waker, and most of the handheld games). I think they realized that the "realistic" style got dated more easily (compare the 3DS version of Ocarina the original one and it's clear that the graphics needed an upgrade), but that the cartoony graphics lacked detail, which is why they started trying to combine them. BOTW seems to be a bit of a sweet spot where it's sufficiently detailed, but stylized enough that it'll still look good years from now.

Actually, from what I can gather, Nintendo made Ocarina of Time (and by extension Majora's Mask) with a cartoony style, but the N64 made it hard to tell what was supposed to be cartoony and what was realistic, since even the more realistic games of that era had to engage in some level of visual abstraction. However, since Ocarina of Time was a bit less cartoony than Mario 64, fans envisaged its art style as realistic (a view which was bolstered by that GameCube tech demo), which is what led to the backlash against the ultra-cartoony Wind Waker.

Looking at the big picture, it's interesting to note that Nintendo's consoles tend to do poorly when they chase power. The NES was underpowered even compared to the Atari 5200, but sold like pancakes. The SNES was an exception, being a bit more powerful than the Mega Drive but still winning that generation (the Neo Geo was even more powerful but its price meant SNK targeted a whole other segment of the market). Then the N64 and GameCube were the strongest and second-strongest consoles of their respective generations, but both got steamrolled by Sony. The Wii was by far the least powerful console of its generation, to the point that some people seriously (and incorrectly) argued it was actually a previous-gen consoles, yet easily won that generation. After that, Nintendo positioned the Wii U as a 'hardcore' console and emphasised power, and well the Wii U was the Wii U. Time will tell how well the Switch fares when Sony and Microsoft enter its generation.

[up][up][up] The Switch does have one thing different than the other Nintendo consoles that did push power:

Nintendo does not have the "kiddy" image really anymore. Unlike the Game Cube did or even Wii U.

I also say that one thing I kinda dislike about Sony and Microsoft pushing power is that it tends to inflate development budgets.
