Somewhere in the vastness that is the multiverse, there lies a great city. Born from a mix of modern technologies and ancient magic, it has become a crossroads between many different realities, resulting in a wonderfully varied populace and a mostly near-futuristic cityscape.

This shining Capital prides itself on being a place of opportunity. It’s up to the inhabitants to make something of it.

Qrlil tilted her head at the new indicator, not entirely certain what to make of it.

All right. Let me try and think. There are a number of stationary cold spots in the basement, which I would assume are probably cold storage units of some type. So this new... whatever it is, appeared at the same time as one of them warmed up...

She hrrmmed slightly. "It appears that those other things, whatever they are, are being... being stored in that basement level. I am not certain what to make of that - " She paused. "Have you done a full scan of that level as well? It would probably make more sense to hold a prisoner there. They could even be using one of those cold storage things for it, depending on what its capabilities are."

(And depending on whether they intended to return Wesley intact - but she very much did not want to think about that).

She swayed back and forth. She really wanted to head for the safety of her suite, and a second pass seemed very dangerous. But they couldn't just leave a significant possibility like this unexamined.

[THE SPIRE-BASEMENT]

Joshua sighed as Kyana fervently hoped that Genocide hadn't hit the media. "With the disturbances he created, along with two people fleeing the police after 'gaining' custody of him, I'm afraid it's too late to entertain the possibility."

He finally walked over to the vent and began pulling hard. As he did, he asked, "Do you need to stay somewhere for the night? If you do, I've had a two-room penthouse at the hotel booked for a while now."

City Center - Alleyway -> Embassy Row

Great, a creepy zombie basement! Garkin looked in surprise at his holograph, taking in the new information. What Qrlil had said made a lot of sense, but he would need a second scan to know for sure.

"I didn't know it was there," he said. "We have to go back, but let's stay out of sight this time."

He started moving back towards the street. This was probably a bad idea, but they didn't have many other options at the moment.

[Embassy Row - Neriad Hotel]

The contact came to a stop at ground level, and at the back of the lobby, the elevator dinged and it's doors slid open.

A figure stepped out. It was clad head to toe in a black uniform, with matching gloves and knee-high boots, an angular stamped-metal short-sword fastened at it's side. Qrlil couldn't see it's face for the bone-white porcelain mask it wore, a visage of eerie serenity. An armband with the letters OSI encircled it's upper arm.

The guard unconsciously straightened her posture when she noticed who had arrived, but just as unconsciously, her hand came to rest near the pistol at the small of her back.

[City Center - Alleyway]

Oh, zhrj.

Qrlil could still barely see inside the lobby with her unenhanced vision, but her backup was still overlaying images, and while it was not remotely military-grade technology, it was enough to spot the white porcelain mask on the new arrival. She had never gotten an explanation for exactly what that signified, but there was certainly something very sinister about the new figure even without Angua's hints from before.

And that was not to mention the way the guard seemed to be reacting, from her postures.

Oh, zhrj.

"Zerrrrimus," she said, her voice drawn-out and somewhat sing-songy from nerves. "I, er, believe we should not try to press our luck any farther after all. Let's go. Let's go now..."

Assuming he turned to follow, she would begin shuffling down the alley, still in a slumped posture, and still glancing periodically behind her to see if someone (or - she thought only slightly ironically - something) was following.

Old City - Moreena's Lair

"Funny you mention that," Eliza replied to Moreena, "Earlier today, shortly before I met you two in fact, one of my drones found an entryway to some underground area. It didn't manage to actually explore it; it told me about it, but then went to see what that explosion was about."

She finished preparing her second cup of tea, and took a sip of it before continuing. "I was planning on sending a proper scouting party down there at some point. I have a feeling there might be something of use down there. I wasn't planning on entering it myself, however." She frowned. "An underground area is not ideal conditions for operating a Scout unit, and there's no way I'm going down there without it."

Sophie and Samantha post will come later; need to think a little more about them.

City Center - Alleyway

Garkin glanced down at his holograph again, and noticed how one of the oddly cold humanoids stepped out of the elevator. Not wasting any time, he promptly turned around and followed Qrlil down the alley. She must have very good eyesight.

"Porcelain mask?" he quietly asked once he caught up with her, remembering Angua's warning. Zombie, machine - no wait, there were no signs of electronics - or just someone with a naturally low body temperature? Garkin decided that asking Angua about it later was probably a much better option than staying around to find out.

Old City - Moreena's Lair

"The locals have a lot of interesting rumors about the place," Moreena said, before drinking even more of the tea. She found it oddly enjoyable for something that wasn't a sacrifice, though it was no match for those fluffy 'baby sheep' things she had first discovered at that strange castle some time ago.

"Supposedly, people often enter the old tunnels in search for ancient treasures and such, but they often find something... unpleasant instead. Finding out which stories are true and not is always fun."

"Porcelain mask," Qrlil confirmed. She was visibly twitchy, and made an effort to control it. "The impression I had received from Angua was that they were just some type of special security, but I think now they might be something else besides that." I'll have to ask her more at the hotel suite.

She darted a quick glance over her shoulder - nothing - and began resetting the appearance of her robes again. The dark color slowly faded out in favor of the pale green and violet ambassadorial robes she had originally worn, now trimmed with gold. The fabric was a little thicker now, though - just in case.

"All right," she said, as they emerged from the alley and onto the next street. She turned and began walking in the direction away from the Nereid Hotel. "I don't... I would rather not go back onto Embassy Row at all, at least not anywhere near there. Fortunately the Quantum Inn is located at the opposite end of the street. According to my map, there is a bus stop nearby where we can catch a bus headed there."

She sighed. I'll never really get used to this kind of thing, will I?

Samantha laughed bitterly. "Sure, it might sound awesome. But this isn't a movie, and the Bleaksteel aren't interested in putting on a good show. When you fight them, you're up against something that simply wants you dead. Unless, of course, you plan on submitting to them."

She glanced at each of the three girls' expressions. "But I can tell that you have no intentions of doing that, and that you're willing to meet them in battle should the situation arise. If I am correct...." She then grinned. "...Welcome to the crew. We'll be happy to have you along, for however long it might be. Who knows; if you stick around for long enough you may even help us put a permanent end to them, which is really what our ultimate goal is."

Gwion's offer had come very unexpectedly. "Really?" Said Akira, the disbelief evident in his tone and on his face. "Wow! Thanks very much!" He grinned and offered Gwion a short, quick bow. This was one of the most generous offers he'd ever heard in his life, even if it wasn't such a big deal to Gwion.

Even Miyuki was also somewhat moved, though she would never admit it. She nodded to him, and then her attention returned to the window.

Already, the moment they got into the pub, Teri's friend started to flatter Marie. She...she thinks I'm pretty...the eyepatch isn't scaring her away...?

Marie blushed, twirled her hair, and gave a nervous giggle. "Aww, you're so sweet. You're pretty cute yourself. Now you're making my cheeks turn pink!"

Nick chuckled. "That's Marie, and as you can see, she's a little flattered. I'm Nick, and that's Adam and Jackson."

"Nice to meet you all." Adam said, waving. "So, what do we do now?"

Kyana crawled after Joshua into the vent and froze when he asked if she needed a place to stay. It was getting late and it would take awhile to get home. But that would mean...'We would be staying together. Sure in separate rooms b-b-but we would still be staying near each other!' she thought and immediately became flustered. The plan though sounded like the best option, what if someone were to come after her while she was alone late at night?

It was settled, she could call her parents and claim she was with a friend (it wasn't too far off). But what would they do the next day? She guessed she could wait and see. "Y-yeah, that sounds good. It's getting really late and I don't know how comfortable I feel going home by myself after everything that's happened. I-I'll call my parents and say I'm staying with a friend." she replied, trying to hide her crimson cheeks.

Zan's Diner

Kiyumi's and Midori's faces lit up at Samantha welcoming them to the crew. "Alright! Ninjas and magical girls! We will totally be an awesome team." Kiyumi cheered. "That's great! I promise we will help you take down the Bleaksteel no matter what." Midori added. Sitting back down after making a cheering motion, Kiyumi put her chin in her hands. "So, where do we go from here? It's a bit late so I'm sure you guys want to get some rest and we can start the next day. But we'll need a way to communicate to find each other again."

Sir Archibald was not surprised by the Professor's reaction - it was not unlike his own upon learning the planet's strange history from George.

"It is indeed most fascinating - at least, I thought so once the shock of turning up there wore off. The most enduring and plausible theory is that it's some sort of natural phenomenon. Although, people being people, there are all manner of other theories involving the actions of the Devil, God, aliens or some conspiracy involving all three. Whatever the mechanism, there seems to be no discernible pattern to the people who arrive, so if there is some hidden intellect behind it all it seems to be favouring a broad cross-section of the population of the British Isles. It's been going on for centuries - Terra Nova time as well as Earth Time. The earliest stable settlements date back close to two hundred years ago by Terra Novan time, which is around the early fifth century in Earth terms. There is archaeological evidence of earlier arrivals that didn't fare as well, which seems to support the theory that it's a natural phenomenon rather than by design."

Kris' gaze took in Wolfe's new riding boots, jacket and leggings then she mentally linked them with Teri's new boots and leggings and smiled. Guess who's been bike shopping. She turned her attention to what Nick was saying. "Pleased to meet you all. I'm Kris, the wordy one is Sir Archibald and the Teutonic Songbird up on the stage is Karl. Just go order yourselves whatever is appropriate and charge it to this table. I'm sure they have plenty of non-alcoholic drinks here. Don't worry, no one here is likely to force alcohol on you."

Teri arrived back at the table carrying a creamy-looking cocktail and Wolfe was not far behind her with his own drink.

Kris eyed Teri's drink with interest. "What's that?"

"A Screaming Orgasm," Teri replied, sliding onto a chair and fishing out her cigarettes and lighter in one fluid movement.

Kris grinned. "Fuck. If you'd wanted one of those, you could've just asked. What's your poison, Wolfe?"

"Gin and lemonade. Nothing fancy." He settled back in his seat and lit a cigarette.

James set a handle of beer on the table and parked himself behind it.

"Now you're here," said Sir Archibald, "I would like to introduce you all to Professor David Lessee, Vice-President of the Tseik Collaborative. Professor, this is Teri, from late 1980s England; James, also from England but in the mid 1700s, and Wolfe, from early twenty-first century New Zealand. We were all fortunate enough to meet up not long after we arrived on Terra Nova."

Teri, James and Wolfe all greeted the Professor then Teri and Wolfe both picked up a menu and started searching through the songs.

Wolfe wondered what he should sing. He thought of all the songs he had traditionally done well at karaoke and all the ones he had scored well with on SingStar. Listening to Karl singing in German gave him an idea for a new search...

Hospital

"You're most welcome," said Gwion. "It's nothing I wasn't already planning on doing. It's getting pretty late and it's been a trying day, perhaps we should go and find-" he was going to suggest a taxi but remembered Miyuki's discomfort in the confines of the bus. "We'll need to find some sort of transport to get back to the Visitor's District."

Then he looked through the door and caught sight of a uniform. "But it looks like that will have to wait." He headed towards the door.

Officer Keith Sorensen eyed the huge pistol strapped to the cyborg's thigh with some concern and wondered if he should draw his own weapon but the cyborg was smiling and approaching in a casual, non-threatening, manner. "Good evening, sir, I was hoping you might be able to answer a few questions."

Gwion nodded pleasantly. "Certainly, officer."

"Do be aware that I will be recording and that you are under no obligation to answer any questions and may decline to answer at any time. If you feel you need to seek legal advice before answering, I can arrange it. You are not currently under arrest but what you say could be used in evidence in any subsequent criminal proceedings."

Gwion went aside with the officer and told him his version of the events of the evening, how they had taken shelter from the rain inside the abandoned mall and had been accosted and attacked without provocation. He was quite candid about drawing his pistol in response to being shot at and using his baton to deadly effect against an armed attacker. He avoided, where possible, saying what others in the group had done - it was, after all, their right to speak for themselves - except to note that Miyuki had been especially restrained in not drawing her sword at any stage in the skirmish, Akira had not participated at all and Energy had spent his time creating protective force fields. No mention at all was made of "cast to kill".

The officer didn't write anything down - it was being recorded after all, and probably automatically transcribed - and he seemed to be consulting something on his hand computer as Gwion talked. He nodded occasionally as if what he was hearing tallied with some knowledge he already had.

When Gwion had finished, Officer Sorensen nodded. "That will be all for now. We may need to call upon you as a witness at some point."

Sorensen turned his attention towards Akira and Miyuki. "I was wondering if I might ask you both some questions regarding the events at the mall. You are under no obligation to answer any questions and may decline to answer at any time. If you feel you need to seek legal advice before answering, I can arrange it. You are not currently under arrest but what you say could be used in evidence in any subsequent criminal proceedings."

Gwion wandered over to a seat and sat down to wait for the others. He was quite surprised - on Earth he would have been arrested and would have had to demonstrate in court that he had been justified in using lethal force. He knew how it went: "self-defense" was a confession, it shifted the burdon of proof from the prosecutor to himself - the prosecutor no longer had to prove he'd used force, he had to prove he was justified in using it.

"Yeah, the bus sounds like a good idea," Garkin answered. He was slightly more hopeful now than before, even though those masked people still freaked him out. If they could cause some kind of distraction and clear out the lobby, and then use the elevator shaft - using the elevator itself would most likely alert the guards - to reach the basement... which is probably full of creepy masked people... The plan needed some work.

Sophie's and Samantha's food finally arrived at that time. While Sophie almost immediately dug in, Samantha chose to hold off for now. She did, however, cast an amused glance between Naoko's order and her own.

"Sophie and I can pull an all nighter if we need to, so I'm not concerned about staying up late. Though I suppose you would probably like to get some sleep soon." Samantha shrugged. "Incidentally, we did buy a cellphone earlier to try and keep in touch with another person that was willing to help us earlier. Then we lost the only thing that had her number on it." She shook her head sadly. "But at least the phone wound up not being a wasted investment. Unfortunately I didn't think to bring it with me when we first set out, so you're going to have to return to the hotel with us before we can exchange numbers."

[City Center - Bus Stop]

Qrlil nodded to Zerrimus in acknowledgment of his agreement.

They continued to make their way down the street, the rain continuing to pour down overhead. She adjusted her hood slightly so that, while it still blocked the rain, it no longer concealed her face as much. While she now felt fairly certain that they weren't being observed - and if they were, changing appearances wouldn't have helped that much - she still wanted to do everything she could to make certain that no one associated the hunched, shadowy figure outside of the Commonwealth embassy with Ambassador Qrlil of Skrahsis.

Not that I am technically an ambassador anymore...

Finally, they made their way to the bus stop, which had a lit-up sign indicating the bus was only a few minutes away. She sat down heavily on one of the seats, still looking warily around as she did so, and let out a sigh. "I suppose," she began, before stopping, not certain how to proceed. Eventually she turned her head towards Zerrimus and attempted a wan smile.

"This has been some night, hasn't it?"

[City Center - Bus Stop -> Quantum Inn (Alliance Suite)]

Qrlil let out another long, shaky sigh as the rain continued to beat down on the roof of the bus stop. She hadn't fully comprehended until now just how nervous she had been. Something about those... beings in the white masks was deeply unsettling to her, beyond just the ordinary fear from physical danger.

And did we even truly accomplish anything? I wonder.

Slumping slightly, she watched as the bus pulled up to the stop and opened its doors. Inside, only a single other passenger - a huge blue hairy biped, evidently from a species she hadn't seen before - was visible. While she had been under the impression that the Capital had a thriving nightlife, apparently nobody wanted to be out this particular night given the weather.

"Come on," she said to Zerrimus, climbing aboard the bus. It set off, the journey taking only a couple of minutes, before arriving at a tall three-sided building at the visitor's District end of Embassy Row. The Quantum Inn's name was proclaimed by glowing letters on a display board that periodically cycled through different colors, and Qrlil knew from past experience that its surface was quite shiny - though it was impossible to tell that in the storm. Inside, though, the decoration was somewhat more restrained: a large open first floor was home to a large central area with a number of small plants and water pools, while balconies lined the back two walls with doors to the suites behind them.

The Alliance "embassy", such as it was, was located on the 25th floor. Qrlil and Zerrimus headed up to it in an elevator, which traveled smoothly and quickly. Once outside the door, she spoke to it quietly: "Authorization Qrlil, password c-m-5-1-3-x."

The door opened, revealing a large room divided into dining, work, and relaxation sections by small crystal partitions. It was decorated mostly in faded pastel colors. Four doors at the back each led to a bedroom with an attached restroom unit.

"Well, here we are," Qrlil said to Zerrimus, bowing slightly. She glanced around, looking for Angua.

Accelerated things a bit here in the interests of story, since Qrlil isn't going to feel safe to relax until she's in the hotel.

I can also provide more description for the suite if needed.

"Nice place," Garkin said once he got inside the hotel suite. He removed his backpack, temporarily placing it on the floor, and stretched his wings to relieve some tension. He had been nervous - afraid even - but it was quickly fading. He had done plenty of similar missions before, but he could not shake the feeling that something had been... wrong this time.
