Somewhere in the vastness that is the multiverse, there lies a great city. Born from a mix of modern technologies and ancient magic, it has become a crossroads between many different realities, resulting in a wonderfully varied populace and a mostly near-futuristic cityscape.

This shining Capital prides itself on being a place of opportunity. It’s up to the inhabitants to make something of it.

Arch Center - Bakery

Kris slipped the phone out of her pocket and passed it to Samantha, assuming that she would need no instruction in its use, then returned to her coffee.

There was something unusual about the two girls, a tension like they were waiting for the other boot to drop and knew that it was going to be a biggie. She would liked to have asked, but didn't want to pry.

"It is unfortunate that we must be so tight-fisted with our abilities, but I assure you it is with the best of intentions, and we do share the majority of our knowledge freely."

Sir Archibald laughed. "I wouldn't say the restrictions are unreasonable. I know a man who would never sleep well again if he heard of your ability – even after you convince him that you have no intention to destabilise the economy."

He looked around the table and rubbed his hands together. "Nearly finished, I see. Where to from here?"

Old City - Out in the Streets

Derek blundered through the rain clutching a plastic rubbish bag about his head and shoulders as a makeshift poncho. His light jeans were completely saturated, his sneakers squelched as he walked and his shirt was plastered to his stomach with cold rain.

None of that mattered. Only getting away mattered.

It was all Brett's fault. "It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt," Brett was fond of saying, "and then it's fuckin' hilarious."

It wasn't so fuckin' hilarious when you were the one who got hurt. The rain had washed away most of the blood, but it hadn't done anything to ease the pain.

''Fucking Brett," he muttered. There was a bus stop up ahead that would provide shelter for a while.

Lying on the ground beside the bus stop was a packet of cigarettes and a lighter, but sadly the packet was a sodden mess from having been out in the storm. Damn! That would've been a good score.

Derek settled into the shelter of the bus stop to rest a while and let the aches fade.

[Bus -> M's Casino- Kevin]

Kevin arrived before security did. They had diverted on another road, and others on the bus claimed they went into Old City, possibly to figure out what sent the bright flash over the capital.

At first, things were calm. He walked around, passing people enjoying themselves in the gambling of money and risk. He considered to join a roulette game, but he heard commotion in another area.

He entered a large floor area, probably once filled with people, now only had a few. They were whispering among themselves and pointed to an upper balcony area. He went to an open area, and looked above.

A lizard woman was cussing, a white-haired man was recovering from vomiting, an asian woman- and a man— in a crimson metal mask.

Something clicked. He remembered the picture he had. The blurry one of a tall male wearing a red mask. Could it be?

[M's Casino- Kommissar]

Kommissar met with Echo. "I agree. My work here's done for the most part. I need him-"

The bald man, who seemed to be in a lighter side of agony and in a daze, stood by the wall. He didn't seem to care when Kommissar ripped a stack of bills out of his pocket. The bounty hunter counted them, and found that some cash was missing. But the bulk of it was there, but in Capital credits. He mumbled a half-hearted thank you and went away.

He went back to Echo. "Not all there, but most of it is." He sighed deeply, and stated, "It'll do." The German went into a side compartment in his coat and put away the money, and pulled out his red mask.

Kommissar then sighted a man who wasn't frightened at all. He was searching and looked the place all over, like he was a detective-

Then their eyes met. The man in the tan coat's eyes widened, like something fell into place. Kommissar saw it before. This man was after him.

"Echo, let's go. Now." He looked to her, then gestured to the other two stragglers, "Forget both of them. I think I'm in trouble."

Life is hard, that's why no one survives.

[City Center - The Spire (82nd Floor Conference Room)]

Qrlil watched as the hologram and drone both disappeared from the room. She couldn't help but wonder just how much of that last exchange had been referring to her, but she dismissed the thought for the moment and inclined her head to Whistler. "Goodbye for now, then," she said cheerfully. "Stay in contact, if you can - as it happens, I have some reason to be wondering the same thing myself!" She hissed. "Although I already have some ideas about that, being apparently the only one here that actually meant to arrive at the Capital..."

She shook her head - an unconsciously human-like gesture - and turned back towards Zerrimus. "That reminds me, we should probably clear this up now: what do cravyn eat? I myself am open-minded when it comes to my diet, although that's slightly constrained by the nature of my evolution." To illustrate, she opened her mouth in a wide human-style smile that showed her very blunt teeth - clearly not designed for eating hard foods, or indeed much of anything besides vegetation.

"I also have no urgent plans at the moment," she continued, "at least none that are particularly practical in this weather."

Outside Fallen Flags Coffeehouse

The three girls didn't question it out loud though Kiyumi and Midori raised eyebrows. Regardless they followed him off the bus and to the front of a coffeehouse. Midori stared at it in awe, admiring the art all around. Kiyumi was grinning. "I think I heard of this place! Ooh, we should get some frappes!" she said to her younger friend. Midori's eyes lit up. "Yeah!" she replied. Naoko stepped up near Seon. "This is where we are going, right?" she asked and unlike the other two didn't assume everything.

"Thank you kindly," Samantha replied before taking the cellphone. She indeed needed no assistance in using it; she figured out how to make a call with it in a few moments, and soon was inputting the number on the business card into it.

Before she actually hit the button to make the call, she responded to Archibald's question. "Unfortunately, after this we're probably going to part ways. I'd love to stick around for a while longer, but we have things we need to do. I apologize if this," she indicated the phone, "takes a while. Hopefully we won't hold you up for too long."

She then hit the call button, held the phone to her ear, and waited.

[ARENA EXTERIOR]

"Now?" Blindman crossed his arms in thought. "Returning the tarp will have to wait. Genocide still remains my priority, even after he's apprehended. I will have to talk with security and convince them to put him in my custody." He then faced Kyana, referring to her, "That will not be easy; someone like yourself probably knows how unreceptive people are to vigilantes, specifically masked vigilantes."

He shook his head. "Won't be easy doing it alone."

[OLD CITY-AMBULANCE]

"Get to work; her breathing's bad!" One of the workers ordered. After that, the vehicle drove off as three more vehicles pulled up.

"Car twelve!" A voice came from the radio, "Do you still need a fourth?"

"Negative. He just got it in the groin. Looks like he'll be okay. Tell the other teams to get ready to treat a wolfman with a gunshot wound, and two comatose teens. We left our fourth man there at the scene to treat them."

In the back of the ambulance, one of the workers grabbed a pair of heavy duty scissors. Inserting a fold from Flamist's hoodie into the corner, he began to cut away a patch in order to work more efficiently in extracting the bullet.

[DAY-KHAN HOUSE]

The last paramedic at the scene tried getting through to the wolfman, but he was steadily slipping away. Thankfully, just as he was losing hope, three more team's worth of workers entered the building and set to work, getting them on stretchers and oxygen.

The last man left sighed in relief as the reinforcements left with their patients being loaded into the vehicles. Hopefully, they could salvage all four of the poor suckers. He was just about to radio in for someone to pick him up when the red-eyed man interrupted.

"Just need to know where I can buy a couple of cattle and about a dozen chooks around here."

The man blinked at the man's request. "At a time like this, you want to raise heifers??"

Tsuki chuckled. "If I knew of jobs around here, I'd be doing them alas. But scrap? Either you've got some kind of amazing nanoconverter system but it needs already processed materials for some reason, or you're...pretty hard up."

She tilted her head and blinked. "One moment, got a call." There was no obvious way for her to know that, but it was all tied into the neural net implants anyways. Samantha wouldn't have perceived the obvious click of a phone pickup or anything like that, just Tsuki's voice suddenly; but the Captain would have only noticed her subvocalizing, not heard anything.

[Old City] (Day-Khan House)

The medics had come very suddenly, and had burst into the house just as suddenly. They quickly whisked Flamist away, and Akira was glad for that. He was no medic, after all, and had only just managed to recall a bit of his First Aid training. And so when one of the people who had burst into the house told him to help Gwion if he could, Akira's only response was to stare, wide-eyed and with a thoroughly daunted look on his face. Thankfully, Gwion recovered shortly after, much to Akira's relief. He got to his feet and walked over to Miyuki, who was standing in a corner of the room not far from the door.

She didn't know much about emergency medical assistance - or anything medical, really - but she was under the impression that medics didn't often kick doors in, and just generally took more time to assess the situation than these ones had. She stood there and watched, silently, as the medics took Flaimist, Rani and Foster away.

"Pretty crazy, huh?" Said Akira, standing next to her. He was still jittery and his nerves were a wreck. Sometimes he liked to talk to help himself calm down, and that was unfortunate, because Miyuki was never very chatty. Right now was no exception. She glanced over at him but said nothing, composed and stoic as ever. "You know," Akira continued. "I think we're safe now. You can afford to stand down a little bit, can't you?" He looked at her plaintively. "Maybe just take off your visor? So I can see you eyes?" He smiled weakly, but it quickly faded when she didn't seem to be doing anything.

A few moments passed, and she sighed quietly. She reached up and took hold of her visor, which reverted to their previous form as odd glasses, and then disappeared entirely. The thrusters on her arms, legs and back disappeared too, becoming holographic outlines and then vanishing into thin air.

She looked over at him, and he smiled appreciatively.

Not entirely dead.

[Old City - Fallen Flags Coffeehouse]

Seon raised his eyebrows at the sight of the derelict sophont staggering into the covering of the bus stop, but didn't say anything. He'd seen worse, and not that long ago. The Disputed Region was a long way from the shiny utopia that the GA always tried to make itself out to be, and homeless beings were among its lesser evils. A little sympathy - that could have been me, sort of - was all he could spare.

Besides, a desperate alien was even more worrying than an ordinary alien.

As he waited for the light to change so that he could cross the street, he glanced back at Naoko, who was rapidly proving to be the smartest - no, that's not quite fair - the most situationally aware of the three girls. "This is... um... where we're heading for the moment. I don't know for certain if I'll be able to find anyone to deal with here, or not." It sounded like the right sort of place for 'fellow travelers', but there was no telling who'd actually be present, or if they'd be serious or just bored privileged trying to make themselves feel good.

The light changed, and he crossed the street and made his way into the coffeehouse. As the employer - and adult - I should probably be the one to buy them their 'frappes.'

Whatever those are.

Gwion looked at him. "Well, I've got a couple of "achers" 'n' it'd be a shame for them to go to waste." He gave an apologetic look for the appalling pun. "Look, it's 'make a joke' or 'cry', mate, an' I'm not gonna fuckin' cry."

He pointed at Rani and Foster. "This is their house, the last thing they remember is teleporting us all to the safety of their home. If they wake up in a hospital, they'd probably freak the fuck out. Isn't there any way you can just give them some IV glucose or something to boost their energy and leave them be? I'll stay with them to make sure they're OK."

Energy, who was in the back of the ambulance with Flamist, took his contruction helmet off before using it to cover her still-masked face.

"I'll keep her face covered. She hates people seeing her face," he explained to the medics.

When they began to cut away at her hoodie she began to struggle a little. Energy kneeled down by her, whispering in her ear. She relaxed visibly, allowing the doctors to finish their job.

Kyana listened to Blindman with interest and her face fell when he mentioned how hard it would be to do alone. It gave her an idea. She would feel bad about leaving the others to investigate the source of the explosion alone, but felt like this might be her calling. "What if I...come with you? I could help! I mean, it's what I want to do, be a hero. And bringing a villain to justice goes along with that." she started to ramble a bit, getting a bit excited.

Fallen Flags Coffeehouse

"I see. Understandable." Naoko replied with no real expression to show she actually did understand. Kiyumi ran past the two pulling a startled Midori along. "C'mon, let's have some drinks and snack!" she called out with a grin, acting a tad bit like a child in a candy store.

Day-Khan House
A chill ran down the spine of everyone awake.
As all the noise and presences erupted in the living room throughout what would otherwise be a quaint (and strangely archaic) rural home, a scratching noise and faint mewling came from a door in the corner. One of the paramedics had a good enough sense to open it up, and out came a rather fluffy and mottled Maine Coon cat, and right behind it flew a falcon.
Looking into the door revealed a hallway with a few other doors and a small staircase, but nothing major and observable. It was notably less full than the living room however, which was packed with furniture and trinkets like the two hadn't just moved in. It seemed the whole place was full of mystery.
The falcon took aim for one of the stretchers, landing on the unconscious Foster's shoulder and preening his curly hair like feathers. The cat, adorned with a baby pink collar and a tag that read "Thistle", did something similar, hopping onto Rani's stomach and curling up as if she was just laying in bed. It seemed the home had treated the pets nicely as they were much calmer than before.
It seems the one thing mages always learn first about their familiars is that they'll do anything to protect their owners. To such a pet, just the thought that they were chosen is enough for them to jump at the guardian's call.
The answer to this is no, they weren't sitting with their owners because they were worried. They knew that Rani and Foster would be okay.
They were simply.. protecting them from what they couldn't see yet.

This 'Kyana' girl sure seemed hopelessly idealistic, didn't she? At least her and Blindman's talk about "heroes" and "masked vigilantes" helped explain a few things.

Blindman lifted his head at Kyana's suggestion. He was surprised that she was asking to have another encounter with someone that almost killed her.

However, he observed how excited she seemed for it. In truth, Blindman marveled at the girl's willingness to learn.

Then everything halted for a few seconds. Finally, the armored man slowly nodded. "Welcome aboard, then." He congratulated, giving a ghost of a smile.

He began turning around to start his hike towards the Spire, as his vehicle was still out of commission, when Moreena's question interrupted him. There was something in her tone that he did not like.

He turned to face the horned lady. "Yes I am. When you have a world like mine, you will need more than police."

At that, Blindman turned on his heel and started walking, counting on Kyana to join him.

[DAY-KHAN]

Before the paramedics had gotten to Rani and Foster, Gwion asked—almost pleaded—if they could be treated at home.

The worker that heard the question shook his head. "No can do, pal. You saw how they were. From my perspective, yeah the girl's just out of it, but her boyfriend's gonna need help with his face. And besides," the man stood up, looking Gwion in the eye, "two of your friends have been shot. One of them's a little girl, for cryin' out loud. You know the authorities are gonna get involved, right?"

He put his hands akimbo. "You just said that those two got you here by teleportation. From where?"

[AMBULANCE]

The worker that was cutting at Flamist's hoodie raised an eyebrow at Energy's comment. He spoke up. "Then you can ensure us that her face isn't injured? If it is, that's exactly what we need to look at. Right now," His eyes went back to cutting away, "we need to stop the bleeding."

He made the final cut and took the patch out, and the two began to treat the gunshot wound as best they could.

Thanks for the PM. I'll keep your information in mind next time I portray an ambulance team.

Kyana smiled when Blindman said she could go with him and but her smile faded to a look of slight confusion when Moreena spoke up about them being heroes. She sounded skeptical which Kyana was slowly getting used to hearing from people. But she would prove them wrong. Blindman's response brought back her smile a bit and she turned to follow him. Her head turned to Lara and Moreena as she said, "I'm sorry to leave you guys, but I wish you luck on discovering the source of the bright light!"

At those words she skipped a bit to catch up to Blindman, her scarf blowing around behind her. The reason she wasn't too worried about seeing Genocide again was because at least now he was captive. Blushing a bit for being now alone with Blindman she looked up at him. "So um... What will you do once the situation with Genocide is settled?" she asked, trying to make conversation.

Sascha parked her bike in front of the Canteen, and she and Cecile ran to the entrance. Inside, they sat down at a free table, and Cecile ordered herself a cup of coffee.

“So”, said Sascha, “what do we do now? We can’t just wander around the West Side at random, can we?”

“No, we make our targets come to us by themselves.”

“How so?” said Sascha.

“We’ll pretend that we’re buyers”, said Cecile. “Then they’ll lure us to our crewmates’ location. And after we reunite with the Afalina, we’ll raid the goddamn place and rescue them.”

“I’m not gonna talk with the slavers.”

“You won’t need to do anything. I’ll do all the talking. You’ll just have to stay alert”, the doctor took a sip of her coffee. “You’re free to flirt with them, if you feel like, though.”

“I won’t be doing that”, Sascha cast an angry glance at Cecile. “Okay, we need to talk to the locals. Put the word out that we’re looking for some slaves to buy.”

[Somewhere outside the city]

An airship with dolphin-shaped hull flied through the thunderstorm. It was in a bad condition already, with half of the engines not working, and the weather was only making it worse. Suddenly, a lightning bolt hit the top of the hull. The hull’s cover cracked, exposing the innards. Some of the ballonets were torn off and floated away. Some other ballonets burst, setting the helium free into the atmosphere. The airship began to decline.

David's face went almost startlingly blank for a second.

"I haven't the foggiest," he said. "I have, after all, only been in this universe for an hour or so. Why not... everywhere?" He paused. "No, no, that's impossible, of course. I suppose I'd like to see..." he trailed off, and sighed.

"So difficut to make a decision without more data. I could scry the city from on high, but what would be the fun in that? Why don't I just tag along with you merry fellows? If you don't mind a third... fourth... er, extra wheel," he finished, smiling.

"I thought you couldn't interface with the city's network."

"I can't," Godsgift agreed, "but I can talk to it. It's inefficient, but I'm working on it. Their encryption standard is unusual—I have gained clearance to interface with it, I just lack the software packages to do so. I'll be able to log in directly soon enough, and then you'll have plenty of resources at your finger... er, paw... tips. In the meantime, I'll see about finding us a meal. You a meal," he added.

Snorting, Whistler headed for the elevator.

"Then I will have to get to work reviving my motorcycle." Blindman effortlessly answered. He shook his head. Without that vehicle, his effectiveness at his duties will suffer. Hopefully, fixing the machine will turn out to be standard procedure.

Eventually, his mind wandered to his companion. She had the drive, no doubt. But he had questions about her knowledge of the criminal underworld. Her nerve-wracking encounter with Genocide proved this.

"Genocide may be contained, but he will still speak. Before he...became what he is today, his speech was far from gentle." He cautioned her as they walked. "If it becomes difficult, I won't blame you for backing out."

"Did she really just do that?" She asked cynically, catching up with Moreena, "That fire-spitter's got a lot to learn. Especially how going in to stare danger in the face like that could get you...get you killed."

Her voice faltering a very small amount, Lara's eye gave a single twitch. Defensively, she turned her head away from the horned lady, trying to avoid discussing the topic she might've just brought up...

Old City - Day-Khan House

The paramedic stood up and looked Gwion in the eye, "two of your friends have been shot. One of them's a little girl, for cryin' out loud. You know the authorities are gonna get involved, right?"

Gwion met the stare silently.

Then, despite the fact that the paramedic was half a head taller than Gwion's one-metre-sixty-seven,note  he felt the need to put his arms akimbo, in a classic "I'm bigger'n you" posture. "You just said that those two got you here by teleportation. From where?"

Gwion wasn't sure if the gesture was a sign of insecurity or of being an arrogant arsehole – time would tell.

Still continuing to meet the man's gaze without blinking, Gwion proceeded to respond in order. He brought his left arm up and scratched the cheek below his right eye with a metal fingertip to call attention to both the hand and the eye.

"Gee, really? I've never been in any sort of scrape before. Never had to talk with any authorities before." He dropped his hand and pulled his wallet from his pocket.

Without once relaxing his gaze on the paramedic, he opened the wallet, pulled out a pile of plastic ID cards bearing his name and photograph and proceeded to flip through them for the paramedic: Certificates of Approval for "Site Security" and "Personal Protection" issued by the New Zealand Ministry of Justice, various Security and Personal Protection Specialist licences for three American States, Japan, England and the European Union and firearms licences for half a dozen countries.

"Some of these are older'n you are. If you want, son, I can furnish you with my vehicle licences as well."

Still not having blinked, Gwion got to the last question. "I'm new here, so I don't know exactly where and, since we arrived here by teleportation, I don't know where it is in relation to here, either. It was an abandoned mall. We decided to shelter in it and we were attacked, without warning or provocation."

Gwion grinned. "Now I've got a question of my own: were you planning on taking them to the hospital with a large cat and a bird of prey sitting on them?"

Old City - En route to the Abandoned Mall

"Or worse," Moreena said. She scratched one of her horns again. "Silly as it is though, I can't help but to admire her attitude a bit. It's almost a pity that it won't last."

She continued to walk, wondering what they would find once they reached their destination. The amount of power she had felt had seemed... excessive, even by her standards.

Still a great "screw depression" song even after seven years.

Energy shook his head sadly.

"She doesn't have any injuries on her face right now. Least, none that you can treat, no offence."

Flamist, meanwhile, took on of Energy's hands weakly and squeezed it.

"They're cutting me. Why are they cutting me?"

"They're getting the bullet out Flai," Energy knelt down and whispered in her ear. "Jus' stay still and it'll be over quickly."

Flamist seemed uncomfortable for a brief moment, but then relented, letting the doctor's do their job. Her power was trickling back to her, thankfully.
