"You have made a grave mistake," Guillaume said to the bandit, sharpening the lips on his face into a grim smile. "Before, when you were but petty thieves, you were mere animals who could my notice in pursuit of the greater evils of this world. But now, you who would dare slay those whom I am bound to protect? You have made it my duty to end you. Against you, I will give no quarter, no mercy, and no relent. Today, I vow that the injuries on my companion will be avenged. I vow that they shall be avenged tenfold. I. VOW. ENMITY!"

He raised his hammer high, channeling a surge of holy energy into it, before striking at the thug.

Thorkil just rolled his eyes. He was getting more confused by the second. He had the presence of mind to keep his mouth shut; he aimed at the nearest bandit and waited.

Thorkil readies an action to shoot the first bandit to continue fighting.

Guillaume's shout broke the silence, slamming his foe with bone shattering fury (8 damage).

Cenhelm sputtered and turned to flee, but Guillaume's hammer came down as he turned (8 damage), cracking the man's skull open and causing him to bleed out.

"You're a raving lunatic, you and your whole bloody troupe," Dunstan shouted from below, about 90 feet away.

Dunstan fired a blot which managed to piece Guillaume's armour and strike his chest though the armour prevented it from piercing deeply (6 damage).

Aelred lept into the cart, while Beothoric fumbled and failed to make it in. Katja's bolt flew at him and scathed him but narrowly he survived (2 Damage).

Thorkil's shot was aimed at Beothoric, the nearer bandit and made it clear into his back as he scattered towards cover. The damage from this was quite substantial, as he began to bleed out.

Guillaume could see the Beothoric as he took shelter on the other side of the cart, clearly bleeding and wounded but readying another bolt.

The Cart had a wooden frame which concealed both the occupants and the goods. It was small, but it was likely that the Troupe slept in shifts in this tent while they were on the road.

This arrangement offered Aelred full cover and Beothoric partial cover, though it was possible to fire blind at Aelred. In this case however, the band risked damaging or destroying the Band's props, goods and travelling home. It was difficult to tell what the actors had, but it was possible there might be some concoctions which could do significant damage to the cart if it was struck by accident.

Torlief managed to gather himself. He felt sleep drifting onto him, but he gathered himself (2 Successes)

"Bloodied as you are, know that it was your own choices time and time again which drove you to this moment" says Katya softly, aiming another Eldritch blast this time at the wheel of the cart to stop any possible get aways.

Katja took aim and struck the wheel, shaking the cart beneath the bandit. It didn't sunder the wheel, but a second and clean shot was launched before the bandits could react, cracking the wheel off of its axle. Edmund broke into sprint, fleeing the scene.

Beothoric laughed and then coughed, "You've bested us, Witch. Aelred may be bitter, but we've no hope. If the spectre you've summoned to our north will relent, then we will go in peace with the body of our friend. If you mean to kill us, then I will let you come to me here. It is late for a gracious defeat, but you've my respect, witch."

Aelred grunted and climbed out, spitting on the ground.

"It would be too petty to steal what these players have all the same," He looked defiantly at the group, though it was evident he was battered and still bleeding, "Their purse would hard buy a meal between us."

He held onto his club, "So send me away to the Valiant Hall or let me walk. I haven't it in me to run and be struck down in flight as Cen."

"Guillaume! Stop the slaughter. The day has been won" calls out Katya as loud as her lungs will let her cry out before she approaches the bandits and the broken cart... crouching down a little as she approaches, looking at them carefully "So the stolen gold is dropped and you're not making away with the cart which doesn't belong to you. I despise the act of wanton banditry but since you have desisted from it, no longer will I pursue you for it. I must attend to my wounded friend... but if you don't run off now I'll listen to your words about Norsark and what drove you all to this. Your voice and reason don't seem to come from a pitch black heart... which makes it all the more a tragedy for us to meet in this way. If this was a trick and I wanted you dead, I wouldn't have asked you to surrender so many times... and already my magic would be ending your lives from afar. Besides... you'll need time to gather the bodies of the brave dead, no? For I'm no witch... but a scholar of the path of the Allfather" says Katya softly, taking from within her robes the Holy Symbol of her God "And I am to look after his children in this life"

With those words said, Katya walks over to Torlief hurrying up, biting her lip as she reaches into her bag for her healing herbs and bandages to stabilize the man.

Beothoric looked up tenatively at the place where the body of their friend lay, he'd seen a phantom blow strike off the man's head.

"May Cenhelm rest in his halls now," Beothoric said silently to Katja's mention of the all-father.

Aelred looked over as he clutched his wounds, his rhetorical demeanour dulled and he spoke with wounded pride, "It would do us no honour to stay and it is not our right to heap on you old and common grievances, but you do us a kindness this day which we did not earn."

"We were not afraid of trickery," Beothoric clarified, "Outlaws have the same needs and wants as the lawful, and we have been much wanting. Still, it is our lot to make due."

"REPENT!" Guillaume called out after Edmund. "I give you leave today, but know that if you return to your ways, my vengeance will be swift and final."

With that, he started heading over towards the others.

Finishing bandaging the poor cleric to make sure he would not slip into the beyond to be with his God, Katya let out a little sigh and then stood up, walking to the men "If you are the kind that would rather take by force and arms instead of receiving help in good faith then you really got no hope at all. You spoke of your group, or a group, who will have no justice here... and by your demeanor it seems like you fall into this fell trade by great necessity. Speak it to me"

"It's not been the same since Aethelwulf took that cursed arrow at Sterleagh bridge, now five long winters past," Aelred looked defiantly, "He came to the aid of us few Sassens still north of the Sark and gave his life, while his bastard of a son, Aethelred signed us away for peace. The Ink dried before his father's blood."

"When the Norsen Crown came for our land and flocks, we gave fight," Aelred said, "The war never ended for us. They took us to court and when we spoke our peace, they called us outlaws. Aethelred would not even take our kind as mercenaries, until three months past. And even then, he offers only a pittance; a few coppers, if we beg, so we can scrape by as a Norsen thrall."

"So we've taken to the forest, so that we may take back piece by piece our flocks and silvers which have been stolen by the Norsenfolk."

The Player meanwhile came back over the hill, her fellows not far behind.

Guillaume regrouped with the others, crouching down momentarily to channel what was left of his healing energy into Torlief.

"My apologies, I had no idea how noble of a cause you support," he said to Aelred mockingly. "With the attacking of innocent minstrels on the road, I mistook you for nothing more than common highwaymen."

"Innocent? These mercenary bastards are guests of Eorle of Edinhelm," Aelred replied, "She may lie dead, but we owe our poverty to her and we intend to pay her back a hundred fold by driving her kin away as she did ours."

"Oh would I that were, my friend; for those were finer days," The Halfling Bard came down with a smile, "Guthrun had an open hand in calling bards to stay. Yet Feng counts coppers and more fearsome still he counts many friends; Now we have naught silver to spare on bread, bandits born aside. His call now comes only as we ask for little more than bread and hope."

The old Halfling gave a half smile and bowed to Katja, then shifted towards the others.

"Would that I could say we owed you a great deal but I fear you've only saved our lives and belongings, neither of which would fetch a great deal more than a beggar's meal at market."

Torlief coughed, Guillaume's healing forcibly bringing him back into consciousness. He whispered a short prayer to Freya as he leaned upwards into a sitting position.

"Freya's blessings upon you." He said to Guillaume. Someone would have to inform him that it was Katya who had stabilized him.

What he did now, is that as he was fading into unconsciousness he saw what he thought was a Valkyrie that just so happened to look a lot like her. Was this Freya telling him to do her work? She was the goddess of love, as well as righteous battle, after all. He'd have to pray for her to clarify.

For now, Torlief looked around him. He counted less bodies than he remembered bandits. Had some of them escaped?

In a flash, Guillaume arrived, hammer born, having hardly ceased his healing of Torlief.

Aelred turned in shock as the Hammer came to his head. He didn't manage a scream before everything above his jaw was paste which splattered on the Katja.

"Aelred was right," Beothoric said in shock as he turned to flee, "You bastard sons of Edinhelm have no honour."

He fled as quickly as he could leaving his bow and club, his face and shoulder bloodied with what remained of his boon companion.

It all happened before Katya could react. Could try to stop it. The Paladin hoisted his hammer at a man that wasn't ready for a fight and broke his body, his head splattering. Life taken in a sudden impulse.

Another one slain and the shock on Beothoric's face, the shaking of his voice as he fled struck Katya hard... as she stood there, the blood of Aelred on her face. She simply stood, stunned for a moment as emotions raged within her heart, thoughts swirling through her mind as she seemed paralyzed by the events.

In the end she didn't go after Beothoric. No tears left her eyes and she didn't wipe the blood off her face... though soon, it would not be noticeable, as her illusory charm covered the splatter.

She turned to Guillaume face seemingly neutral, though who may wonder what her expression looks like behind her illusions as she says "Curse you, Guillaume, Paladin of Thor. For the battle was won, the men surrendered and while I won't mourn life lost in battle to clashing ideals and certainty of purpose, you have brought further darkness to this world, slaying one whose weapon was down in one fell blow and bringing sorrow and pain to the heart of another where light was near certain to be given a chance to be born. I regret weaving my enchantment upon your form and may your thoughtless, reckless, certainty bring you a regret a thousand times worse"

With those words, the black robed woman turns her back on the Paladin, moving towards the broken cart and crouching down before it, bringing her hands to her face as she takes deep breaths to calm her heart and let energy fill her anew.

"The drama," The bard said coming up, "The redemption, death and betrayal."

She wrung out each word for everything it was worth, looking at the bodies and the principle actors; at Katja, Torlief and Guillaume respectively.

"To think we'd chance to find another troop on the road," She said, "but I can't take it for better or worse as far as signs go. Though certainly it would be a fine way to close a first act. The kind of drama that ends where the omnious cloaked figure is no longer the villain but the former friend turned foe. Though it's hard to pick a protagonist; Hel for all her mercy has her fury, which you played right well. The Paladin screams for it, but the ambiguity of the closer. It's a work of twisted genius, but only if the audience will follow it. It's hard to cast a spot light on the good side of Hel."

Her ramblings shifted between awed gratitude for the rescue and as an old craftswoman, eying the ambitious work of a young apprentice.

"Nonetheless that you have your dedication in the sort of work you have," She said in awe, dusting off Torlief's armour, "Very admirable stuff. It's rare these days to find a troop with your dedication to the act or with your spells. You can't be bound for Edinhelm; Feng isn't half the host to merit travellers as yourselves, if the player with the Hammer will excuse my saying so."

The Half-Elf came behind her, and behind him a young human girl and another who was either a short human or a remarkably tall halfling (his bare and harry feet hinted the latter).

The Half-Elf moved silently to survey the damage on the wheel.

"You do not understand the oath I have sworn, girl," Guillaume replied to Katja. "In this world, where I see darkness, I must stamp it out, shield those those of pure hearts, lest they be swindled and harmed. And when there is no darkness to be found...."

He went over to her, and the other half-elf who was looking at the wheel of the cart. "...then I must aid those whom I have failed to shield. Allow me to lend a hand." He started to the cart lift upwards from the end, attempting to raise it enough to take the weight off of the broken wheel.
