The Matter of Norsark: RP Thread

Each of you recieved a letter a couple days past, which caused you to rush to Norsark. The messanger was evidently in a rush, either to bring it to the next receiptiant or to return home.

There were some mild flourishes and variants between the letters (as is wont to happen when you rewrite without intending to reproduce an exact copy), but in general, they read as follows;

"Dear (Receiptiant),

At some point in the previous years, you've made quite the impression on our Hrolf. As you might have heard Eorle Gundrun passed some months ago of natural causes but young Hrolf has been inconsolable and in a strange humour. He's always been well intentioned but impulsive, as you well know, but I fear Gundrun's death has clouded his judgement.

As such, I ask of you, as his friends from kinder days far removed from the politics of Edinhelm, that you might come and see to it that his spirits are lifted so that the dark cloud cast over our people by his mother's passing might finally be lifted.

I'll see to your hosting and ensure your travel expenses are paid. I beg your hasty travel for the sake of your friendship with him and I look forward to making your acquaintances.

May Njord see to your safe travels,

Eorl Feng of Edinhelm"

Your travels have taken you to Rowarddown, a small port town about a day's travel from Edinhelm. There is only a single inn here, "The Oaken Skald".

Here, by co-incidence, you find yourself with your fellow travellers, on the ground floor by the bar.

"Well met," Guillaume said to those sitting and/or standing at the bar near him, including Thorkil, and two others who he may or may not have met before, but if he had ever met them before then they were included in his greeting.

"I've had some good fortune with my most recent smitings, let me buy us a round of drinks." He looked around the tavern to see if anything, or anyone, caught his eye. The matter of most importance, though, was tracking down the bartender.

Perception check on bar.

Guillaume saw the bartender and he couldn't say for certain but... it looked like a dude. At least it looks like there's a beard but shit, it's a dwarf and it is a pretty adorable and whispy looking beard.

It's kind of a coin toss really.

Guillaume wishes he knew more about Dwarf biology.

Oh well, nothing a gallon of Ale couldn't teach him.

The cleric next to Guillaume nodded at the greeting. A stranger, but he seemed friendly enough.

I think I'm in an obscure enough location, and in an obscure occupation for the mob to have found me already. Then again, who knows who might want to kill me. I'll accept nonetheless.

"A drink would be well appreciated, brother." Torlief replied, raising his currently empty tankard. "May the blessings of Freya fall upon you."

"Excuse me, barkeep, if you'd be so kind as to bring my friends and I a gallon of ale and some mugs," Guillaume said to the barkeep.

"Aye," the Bartender grunted, "Lonely Sentry ale will do ye?"

A woman entered the Oaken Skald. She was wearing dark robes and leather armor underneath a similarly dark dress, as well as carrying a backpack. With wild black hair and heavy bags under her eyes she barely took much notice of the people within.

Once, when entering a new locale she would have made sure to look presentable, make a good entranced and then get a good look at the crowd for the sake of picking out notable individuals. However, that was a matter of the past... and at the moment, Katya Erikdottir was plenty tired from a day of riding on the back of a wagon, trying to fix a star map delicately with ink, only to ruin her work with every bump of the road. Eventually she had given up and then decided to reread the letter a few times in between picking at the tome in her pack.

Even though she had means of erasing away the look of fatigue, her disorderly robes and the mess that was her hair, she didn't even bother to try them. This was another village she would never come back to... no need to play with appearances. More importantly, her stomach was rumbling enough that she actually paid attention to it.

With a little sigh, she dragged her body up to the counter... sitting on the nearest empty seat as she raised a thin shaky voice... damn, was she so weak from not sleeping and eating? "S-S-Sir... C-Can I please get... ah platter... no, three platters of food? Also a-ale to wash it all down" she says, supporting her head with an elbow on the counter and her hand on her cheek, taking out from a pouch two silvers to lay on the counter... at least she could read the ambiance and someone that looked as she did may raise suspicions of whenever she can really pay what she asked for.

"Indeed," Guillaume told the barkeep. "I'm in a Lonely Sentry type of mood," he added, trying to think if he'd ever had any before. He noticed a young woman who had sat down near him, and quickly turned back to Torlief to mutter a quick "Yes, yes, Freya's blessings, thank you, and Thor's in return, may his hammer smite those who would harm you," before looking back at her.

"Soooo..." he said to her. "What brings a girl like you to town? A friend of mine's father passed away and I'm here to console him, possibly take him out for a night on the town. I'm a good friend in that way."

"Mardöll.. You're skin and bones, my sister. Worry not." Torlief interjected, moving Katya's silver pieces closer to her and placing four of his in their place. "Allow me to provide."

That's the right thing to do.. I think. I need to review after all then.

"Bartender, my good man, bring this soul whatever food four silver will buy." he said, in a louder voice than Katya had used.

Persuasion roll to make the food either better, or more than usual.

The bartender reaches under his table and produces a basket of bread, "You think I'm heartless now, do you?"

He slams down a pint of Lonely Sentry ale and another Gallon for Guillaume.

"The first round and bread for the lady is on the house. I'll not see a Woman starved in the house of the Oaken Skald. Morrígan preserve us."

He turned back, "Mabyn, get three orders of scouse, and some lamb out. We've got a starving waif with a generous butty."

"Uhhh...?" It took Katya a moment to recognize that she was being addressed by someone else. As she was, she really doubted anyone would approach her for any reason... however the gentleman before her seemed to be a peculiar one "Hmmm a friend of mine's mother passed away and I'm here to look over him at the request of his father..." says Katya mimicking a few of the words the stranger said at her... though she then lifted one eyebrow at the coincidence.

Then however, she was distracted by the generosity of strangers "Ah... thank you" she says, her cheeks hollowing a bit as she smiles at both the dwarf and the cleric interceding in her behalf "D-Do I truly look that terrible? Really, it's not quite as bad as that..."

"You're barely speaking, bach," The Barkeep said, "And your looks don't speak well either at all, in honest truth. Have a bit of bread and you'll be chopsy in no time at all, won't you."

He pushed the bread a bit closer up to her and made sure she could see her ale.

"Ha, did I say father? I meant mother too. What a coincidence!" Guillaume said, taking a mug, pouring into it from the gallon, and taking a swig. "I get a bit forgetful when I'm... distracted."

"Come now, barkeep," he added to the barkeep. "You can't talk to a lady that way. You're embarrass her."

"Uhh... t-then..." Katya nods her head in thanks for the great charity of those involved, holding her bread in both hands to then dig into. While she was caring little for physical pleasures of late, in that she barely regarded them, she couldn't deny that when they came, they were good... and after near a day without eating a bite, the bread was heavenly as it crunched when she bit into it and then was washed down her throat with some ale.

She lets out a little whimper of delight and then continues eating mechanically, her lightly sunken, dark rimmed eyes taking more careful attention of the kind souls around her "Thank you very much... M-May the Allfather keep you in his vigilance and fill you with blessings and wisdom..."

Then, to the first person that spoke to her... she couldn't read the meaning of his words very well, or more like she worried about it so she merely asked "Ah, distracted with drink?"

The bartender looked at Guillaume with a slight scowl, before laying down a pair of cups.

"You'll not be drinking right from the jugs now will you? It's enough trouble that we do be cleaning all the cups, not to be cleaning patrons off the floor as well."

A gallon's worth. Quite the amount, but then again it was meant to be shared.

Torlief reached over to the gallon, picked it up, and poured himself a cup into his empty flagon. He took a small piece of bread for himself as well, mostly to distractedly munch at while drinking.

Slightly stale, but I've had worse. It's fine.

"We've all come to visit this.. friend of ours, haven't we. I'm thinking this isn't coincidence, so I'll just come up front with it: We're all here at the behest of the Eorl of Edinhelm, aren't we?"

"You should be ordering yourself if you fancy bread, rather than taking off a starving lass," the Dwarf grumbled.

He's right. Damnit.

"Well.. You've got a point actually. Yeah, I'd like some soup and some bread then." Torlief said, looking a bit ashamed. He put down a silver piece, almost like an apology.

The Barkeep smiled sincerely at the apology, "Not to worry at all, the scouse'll be ready soon. It's a quick make."

He put another loaf of bread on the table for the cleric and then, went to root around for some butter.

"Mabyn, throw another scouse on the pot, would you?"

"Aye," a gruff but distinctly feminine voice came from the backroom, "Try te get yer orders in one go, I'd imagine the other two will be having something, I would."

"So would I as well," He turned to the other patrons.

Without really measuring her speed of eating, Katya had already downed a bit more than half of the bread she had been provided... so when the man that was paying for her meal got chastised for taking a bit of her bread she slowed her pace and then broke a piece off to offer him "You paid for the bread, we can share until your portion arrives. I am already feeling a bit stronger with something in my belly..."

"And it also seems like we're all heading the same way... it may be the work of providence... then again, this is the village just before Edinhelm" says Katya, her blue eyes growing sharper as she regards the two men sitting by her at the bar "It seems like quite the mood our old friend is in, that he requires such a party to lift"

"No, no, it's fine. You need it more than I do after all." Torlief replied, shaking his head. "I'll be getting my own soon enough."

The orange-haired cleric leaned upwards from his previously hunched over position. "What far could Hrolf have gone in his depression to require a group of us?" he wondered out loud, before taking a swig of his ale. He rotated his shoulders a bit and shifted his position.

"Now here..." She says, injecting some more strength into her voice, some she had recovered and some she could get once she focused on it "I am not going to fall over and die for giving you some bread"

Then after splitting the bread and handing him some she looks down at the piece she's left with picking at it in small pieces "Hmm... as for Hrolf... it is his mother after all. He is... a person of heart" says Katya, her face turning a little melancholic at the words "Such a loss ought to harm someone like him, I believe... I know that it would hurt if my own mother left for the Realms Beyond"

"Yes, a pity it is," Guillaume said. "Death is the greatest enemy left in this world. The only evil that my hammer cannot smite. The one evil that I cannot destroy... only avenge." He took an introspective glance at his cup of ale, and then took a drink.

"How do you all know Hrolf? I met him quite some time ago when we were wenc-" he cast a glance at Katya. "Attending to matters of nobility. I imagine you all have quite the history if you've been summoned too."

"You may say that you were 'wenching' as some may put it" says Katya, giving Guillaume a bit of a sideways glance, letting out a little breath as she nods her head. At least she seemed to be understanding the kind of man he was a little more "It isn't that much to hide and I'm way old to blush at such matters"

"I actually hired him and a friend of his to accompany me on a research expedition as my guardians. A scholar tends to be drawn if not to libraries or temples, then to places where knowledge may lie hidden by danger. After our travel was done, we kept in contact... for his nature was quite amiable"

The Barkeep smiled triumphantly, as he found a brick of butter,

"I'd left a couple glasses in front of them," he said putting it down on the table as best he could between Torlief and Katja.

He gestured to the bread he'd already put on the table to Torlief.
