Ah, yes, T & A for Episode 0, as per tradition.

Damn, I really missed these girls. Everyone is still fantastic. I'm even enjoying Eriri's character more now that Michiru, the true childhood friend, is taking her down a notch. Utaha bribing Michiru was pretty funny. And Megumi has just gotten cuter with her longer hair. Ugh, Tomoya you lucky bastard.

Episode 1: In which Utaha and Eriri show that sometimes people hate the people they like. On a side note, the OP sequence uses a wonderful pastel palette.

Episode 2: Utaha delivers some hilarious lines such as "My thirst for knowledge is greater than my thirst for food or men right now" and "Let's watch a live-action adaptation that's anguishing the fans of the original." And she remains a masterclass tease.

And overall Meguri is still awesome. Her "low-key way of stealing the show never ceases to amaze", indeed. Like holy crap, she has a duplicate of Aki's house keys! When did that happen? Seriously. Best background character ever. And just look at how pretty she is, rocking that ponytail and sweater. Okay I'll shut up now.

Episode 3: Aki and Megumi are practically husband and wife. Poor girl.

Loved how the Icy Tail girls get roped into coding work. Stick it to those riajuus!

Well this got pretty DRAMA heavy, yikes. Well same can be said for the entire season so far but damn. Well one down.

[up] Well every girl now has slept in his bed [lol].

I actually found Aki's criticism of Utaha's script interesting, as I too would have also probably been unable to accept an everyone-is-happy ending, as a writer. But it makes sense for a game to allow for those kinds of miraculous contrivances.

Also: Metronome In Love is a tragic romance about an introverted writer? That sounds really... boring. Utaha's writing must be just that good. Or I'm just letting my bias against that kind of premise show too much.

Anyway, I love the harem romcom shenanigans, but SaeKano always shines the best when it delves into its tropey characters and breaks them down. Episode 4 is basically an extended sequence of sinking the Utaha x Tomoya ship, and boy is it ever heartbreaking. The game Tomoya had wanted from the very start revolved around his fated meeting with Megumi. It doesn't matter how much Utaha tried to dress it up with time-travel, world-ending epics and alternate routes. The heroine had been already chosen.

[up] Long-haired Megumi at the end was so overkill two ships have been torpedoed. Even Eri can't imagine Aki with anyone but Megumi.

His criticism was correct though, you can not just write a game as a novel. It has to be more akin to an anime script with stage direction narration.

And if you go multiroutes for a VN you gotta have that Golden Ending or Harem Ending somewhere for players to earn, even if its not the best written one its gotta be there for closure.

[up] First bit is obvious, but second bit is interesting especially since it goes heavily against my writing sensibilities. Sometimes you gotta go for wish fulfillment.

Episode 6: I for one am glad for Megumi venting to Tomoya. She didn't shout or cry or anything, and that made it all the more upsetting. Shame on him for leaving her in the dark like that. That implies a lack of trust.

Also that scene was scary. Skews really close to how real-life high school girls get upset.

[up]

I think the issue isn't lack of trust as such, it's that Tomoya always sees the big picture. This lasts until people point out that they are, well, people. He's focused on the results, so he unintentionally (maybe even intentionally) pushes their feelings aside.

[up] Yeah, that was sort of what I meant, hence "implies". To Tomoya he's just looking at the bigger picture, but for Katou, it would have felt like Tomoya didn't trust her enough to at least tell her about Eriri and the status of their project. Despite her several very obvious hints.

Episode 7: Painful. Already sad to see so little of Megumi this episode, and Tomoya had to endure that for two months. Come back!

Eriri and Utaha are trying their darnedest to expose Tomoya as a harem MC.

Also, Title Drop.

Episode 8: Did you anguish over the lack of Katou Megumi last episode? Then rejoice, my comrades, as this episode is 100% Katou Megumi. With some Tomoya Aki for dressing.

Seriously, you get everything you could ever want from the girl, from blank killer stares to zingers to casual not-girlfriend activities to bouts of actual emotion. Even ends up in a fascinating role reversal by the end of the episode where it's Katou lecturing Aki, this time about how he should really treat people the way he treats game characters. Incredible.

She's also probably the only anime girl that I'd actually call a waifu, because she makes for a damn awesome wife. One hell of a boring girlfriend.

Episode 9:

Tomoya's wishy washy harem lead habits bite him in the ass again. Though of course anyone would pick a hitmaker producer with a major RPG project over an inexperienced newbie with a new IP, nine times out of ten. Not exactly what I'd call a betrayal, but apparently it sort of is?

Speaking of that hitmaker, damn that is one heck of a way to rope in your staff. The frantic violin BGM in that scene doesn't even feel out of place.; Akane Kosaka was a goddamn demon overlord. How appropriate.

In any case, things are getting really interesting now that the circle has indeed crashed and burned. Can't wait for the tension next episode. Oh and I presume Hashino Izumi will be taking over for Eriri, but will Tomoya end up becoming the writer?

I would say its a betrayal at a personal level. But getting poached like that is the kind of thing that people hold grudges over and try to destroy the other person's career when they hit it bigger.

[up] Calling it a betrayal is over dramatic. it had always been a school club project, for one game only, with no expectations that Blessing Software would continue and of course Tomoya never so much as hinted at Eriri or Utaha that he was planning to create a new game with them.

In short, he took them for granted, despite all his assurances and protests that he valued them, kept everything to himself and got burned as a result. He made the same mistake as he did with Megumi.

[up] Yup. And the bottom line is that Tomoya can feel betrayed, but they're not obliged to go along with his whims, and put up with his incompetence. (Incompetence might be too strong a word to use here, but still)

Anyway, episode 10. Kinda freaky how buddy buddy Eriri and Utaha are now. They even hug! And fistbump! Cheering for them in their quest to take down Akane Kosaka.

And man, Megumi is too good for Tomoya.

Also Yaoi Fangirl coffeshop clerk is still going strong.

[up] Episode ten is what happens when harem members notice they don't actually need the useless male protagonist any more.

[up] Spot on. Which is the sensible thing to do, really.

Granted, it was kind of a jerkass move to only tell Tomoya they're quitting a month after the fact, but then again they can all do better on the communication front.

Anyway, Tomoya's definitely not gonna stop here. I'm almost 100% sure that Izumi and Iori are going to be joining the doujin team. Michiru and Megumi are probably sticking with him, so I guess we're only missing a writer at this point!

[up][up] Sadly based on the genre and the fact they fucked up before, they are going to crash and burn.

Episode 11:

  • It's the return of the hat!
  • Of course they end up parting on more or less cordial terms.
  • I'm sure many guys wouldn't complain about getting a surprise kiss from Utaha but it kinda leans towards 'not cool' for me. It's borderline adultery!
  • Huh, almost no Michiru this season. Which they lampshade promptly. Though I suppose she can make up for it in a hypothetical S3, what with Eriri and Utaha away.
  • Holding hands makes bags feel lighter. True facts.
  • First names! Loved Megumi's reaction to Tomoya's fashion statement.
  • "[[((Squee That kind of a reaction}}]] isn't exactly an incentive." Sick burn.
  • Izumi confirmed to be blessing software's next artist. Michiru and Megumi are also sticking around. Now all they need is a writer!

Finally got around to watching the movie, which wraps up this story, and it wraps up everything quite nicely. It is also pure crack for Megumi fans, which makes sense since in a sense, this movie is all about Tomoya finally committing to her route, something that gets referenced over and over again within the movie itself. Megumi is freaking adorable.

Super happy to see Tomoya and Megumi happily married, and everyone come back together in the epilogue to make a new game as adult professionals. Also sad to say finally say goodbye to this series, but at the same, I love my happy endings.
