So something struck me just now:

Are the writers/directors/producers for these movies Swedish?

Uh, no. Matthew Vaughn, the director and co-writer, and Jane Goldman, the other co-writer, are both English.

Alright. I was just wondering because of how every world leader except for Sweden appears to be psychotic dicks.

The King's Man has had it's release date delayed to September 18th, 2020.

Sucks, but at least No Time to Die is in April 2020, and the marketplace for the last 4 months of 2020 is at least a bit bigger because of the change.

That dude could have at least pretended the knives were doing something.

This is why you need to aim for the head or the neck I guess.

Watched the prequel just now in local cinema. Went in not expecting much and enjoyed in more than anticipated. Has its faults, but definitely better than the second one.

[up][up] I'm not trusting any cinema anytime soon, but that's a relief to hear. Now to just wait for DVD release!

I watched it in theaters with my dad last weekend. It was really fun.

It's very different from the modern movies, the lack of super tech results in a more toned down spy movie, and the WWI backdrop makes it more serious in tone.

The jokes are there, but more understated and character driven, with the crazy action being the thing that connects both timelines (beyond their shared lore).

I really enjoyed Fines' Lord Oxford, and the moment that transitions into the start of the third act was so incredibly well done. I knew it was coming, but it still hit me.

The conspiracy is silly super spy stuff, but I'm interested in its set up for further alternate history shenanigans.

Wouldn't mind a direct sequel, specially since The Golden Circle basically torched the modern franchise for me.

They should do a third Kingsman movie with Mark Strong back and saying that he faked his death with a hologram.

Also, other dead characters.

Just...play into the lunacy.

Unfortunately they already played that card in 2 with Harry. There's just no way to get Roxy and Merlin back without just completely destorying the little goodwill still left of the modern setting.

The worst part is JB. They already introdued his replacement, and I would fucking dread seeing the dog around even for a second of screentime in an hypothetical Kingsman 3.

Jesus Christ, I hate that second movie so much.

I mean that since the second movie did, embrace the silly.

I think the boat has already sailed for the franchise's goodwill by this point. Kingsman II was what it was and the King's Man has been scattershot in reception.

I was thinking of seeing it, but then I read about it going full alt history by having Lenin as a German agent and part of a secret society with Adolf Hitler (thus pulling the "communists and fascists are the same" card), and I am incredibly hesitant. The poor reception has only added to that hesitance. Call me a stick in the mud history major, but I hate alt history enough as is.

In the fact that Lenin is absolutely a German asset, it is.

In the fact Adolf Hitler is involved is pure nonsense and extraordinarily offensive, no.

Lenin was actually brought back to Russia by a German government supplied train in hopes that he would help pressure to bring about an end to WW 1.

And the Germans literally tried to fight the Bolsheviks after they took power. Lenin supported the Sparticist revolution and called its leadership "eagles" for god's sake. The claim that Lenin was a "German agent" was used by reactionaries and social democrats like Kautsky and his ilk to slander him and the Bolsheviks. Not remotely the same thing and totally ignorant of the actual history of the Russian Revolution and civil war.

#346: Jan 29th 2022 at 3:39:43 PM

The point is moot. Lenin is not a german agent in the movie. The conspiracy is international and is seeking to kill the old monarchies. They are fueling the second war because they failed to kill England's in the first.

That still reeks of the same annoying tropes of alt history media that I've grown to despise. It's the same issue I have with Don Bluth's Anastasia: the Russian Revolution is depicted as being, contrary to the mass uprising it was in real life, planned from outside by manipulative, evil forces. Tying that conspiracy into Nazism, and by consequence tying the Bolsheviks with Nazism, is repugnant.

Fair, you best off not even glancing at this thing. The Kingsman movies are not aiming to anything even remotely resembling our world.

Okay? I'm fine with things being unrealistic. The first movie is a good over the top action film. But this is a step too far and leans into uncomfortable implications *at best*.

It's one thing to have a goofy action movie where a lisping Samuel L. Jackson wants to pull a Malthussian scheme, heads explode, a knockoff Westboro gets slaughtered in a mass frenzy, and other crazy stuff happens. It's another where actual real life events, including two entire wars, get tied into a fictional conspiracy that just feels...REALLY uncomfortable? This is moving past fictional goofing around and touching on very real things.
