"Yeah, Sue. She's a witch, and knows a lot about the magic world. She...looks a bit like you, actually." He cocked his head to the side comparing Sue to the girl in front of him. "Yeah, kinda like you. It'll take about a half-hour to get to her place, assuming she's there anyway. She should be, anyway."

He finished piling up books onto the cart, and stood up, stretching a bit.

"So, you up for this?"

Chana ben Ami was draped over a chair in her apartment, utterly bored. "Let's see, already did all my homework, finally finished the Talmud, nothing good on TV... Can you think of anything to do, Cathy?"

The ghost of Chana's best friend, who had manifested herself as slumping on the sofa, turned to face her and said "Isn't there that new coffee place you've been wanting to try? The Magic Beans, or something like that?"

Chana's eyes lit up, and she lifted herself off the chair. "Oh yeah! Let's go and see how good it is, shall we?" And with that, she got up and walked out the door to her apartment, making sure to lock it, then making her way through the bar below.

The Griffon's Wing wasn't the nicest of establishments, but it wasn't a dingy "Bad Guy Bar" like you see in movies. Plus, they had some great beer. The bartender (also Chana's landlord) and the regulars had learned to respect (and occasionally fear) Chana, mostly because of her nigh-legendary temper. They had also once seen her neutralize a biker almost a foot taller than her in one shot (granted, it was a crotch shot, but still), so that factored into it. Today, there was, fortunately, no wannabe tough-guy who had heard the tall tales the patrons had spun and wanted a go at her. In fact, the entire walk to the coffee shop was quite peaceful and ordinary, which was nice.

When Chana arrived at The Magic Beans, she ordered a straight, black coffee, filled it with far too much sugar and cream, some cinnamon, and some powdered chocolate, then took a table next to Nimue and Maria.

Church Parking Lot

CE's tactics were not enough to escape from the short man's knife... he changed his angle, cutting a long line on CE's arm... however, of the two, Rico definitely got the worst of it as the impact hit neatly on his jaw... The smaller man tried to dodge, but wasn't quick enough. While he managed to avoid a lot of the impact, what was left was more than enough to send him sprawling the floor, with a broken jaw... clearly out of the fight.

"Huh..." For a moment, the grinning man's smile faded... for the first time since he stepped out of the car. He looked blankly at the vampiric nun as if a treat he was long waiting for had suddenly been snatched away from him. Then he smiled again "Ehehe... please don't be silly... I saw it in your eyes... you know that isn't what you want. Please, the good girl act really isn't fun anymore... not when so many, better prospects are awaiting you"

However, for Mary the tempting scent was now... diminished, now that she had overcome temptation. She was still a vampire and the blood still smelled sweet to her... however, that extra bit of edge that made the wound on the girl nearly irresistible was now gone... replaced with the scent of demonic sulfur they had forced onto the girl.

The Magic Beans Café

"Hmm, true," Nimue admitted, taking another nibble at the pastry and a sip of her frappe. "But I know a friend who might know a bit more than the papers, and from there, who knows~"

She smiled down at Connie watching her intently on the table and left a bit of the tart for the little mouse to have at. Stretching, she spotted a perfectly ordinary college student and her ghostly companion following alongside enter the cafe and gave both of them a friendly wave before standing up.

"You want to come with? Elyssa's a lovely person and I'm sure she'd love to make a new friend." Nimue adjusted her backpack and took another sip of her coffee.

"Your mother and father would be good, if they're awake," Lucerna said, looking around. Inside the iron fence, the sense she'd been getting of some sort of charge in the air was lesser, but disturbingly, not gone all the way. Not even a fence enchanted that strongly was going to be enough to keep out whatever was going to happen. "Or perhaps even your grandmother."

It's been fun.

C.E. groaned as he watched the man go down, but not without leaving a good slice in his arm. Waiting a moment to make sure the man stayed down, he looked at his arm and grimaced. The cut seemed like it wouldn't put him down too soon, but if there was more fighting ahead in the church then he would have issues. And then there was the issue of it getting patched up, but he could deal with that later.

Walking over to his pack and grabbing his last wood bat to take along with the metal one, he looked over his fallen opponents and groaned yet again. All Latinos, a tinted SUV, and a boss man who looked like he fell into his closet and wore whatever landed on him. This definitely felt like gang shit to him, and that wasn't a headache he even wanted to deal with on the best of days.

Steeling himself to enter the church, he once again pumped energy into his bat, with slight difficulty now, and walked through the doors. Seeing the men around the nun and a woman now sitting on a pew, who C.E. guessed was in the bag now that he thought about it, he stood a decent distance away and said to the boss "Yo boys are busy nappin', figured I'd come inside and check out the party."

Chana waves back at Nimue with a smile, though she notices that Nimue appeared to wave to Cathy too. She said to Cathy (mentally, of course) D'you think that she can see you?

Maybe. Cathy responded. I'll wave back anyway. Won't do to be rude, after all. She giggled a bit, then waved back to Nimue.

Mary's mental haze was lifting. The single lust for blood was soon replaced with a flurry of emotions. Shock, hate, fear, anger, shame, and just a tinge of relief. A part of her wanted to cry, but even humble nuns have pride. The other part wanted to take all these emotions and physically unload them on the grinning man, but she had a vow of non-violence and was in a church no less. Besides, Mary knew part of the reason she was so upset was her own conduct. Mary seethed for a bit before pocketing her emotions somewhere deep inside. She will sort them out later in prayer. Right now she has to make sure that girl is alright and to get these guys out of her church.

While she prided her church as being a safe place for all, these men were not seeking salvation. She quite frankly no longer had the mind to deal with them any longer. "I don't think I thanked you for the gift Mr. Efestos. I will make sure she is very well taken care of." Mary kept her eyes on the girl as she spoke. Her voice came out cold and flat and, while she tried to keep her emotions out of it, she could not help but sound a bit indignant. "I will also have to refuse your offer. So if you have no other business, I am going to have to ask you to leave." She turned to the group of men but found that there was one more then before. "Mr. Lash!? What are you doing here?".

With a nod, the young red headed teenager dove into the house, directing Lucerna to sit on the cozy living room, which was decorated in a mix match of styles speaking of one generation after the next adding in their own color to a room, but unable to remove what came before it.

Not long afterwards, more of the Greyfields made themselves seen... Jared's father, mother and then his grandmother. Jared's father was called Jonah, a tall man with long legs and a really kind, childish smile. In the middle of his forties, he had strong rugged hands from a life of constant, dedicated work... and of course, the wield red hair of the Greyfields.

His wife was Rosemary Greyfield, a woman with a nice motherly air upon... with a kind smile and the air of an old style, elegant housewife. With brown eyes and chestnut colored hair, she came into the room with a platter full of little baked treats for Lucerna to indulge in plus and offer to start making some coffee.

The grandmother of the clan, Elena, made her appearance not long afterwards. It was a long time since her own proud red hair had started to turn to grey. The years had not been kind to her beauty of youth, but she had settled nicely in her role as the elder of the clan... a warm figure that nevertheless commanded much respect. And from behind her glasses she looked full of love at the newest member of their family... a baby girl she held in her arms, that couldn't have been more than seven months old. Gently swaying the babe in her arms, she nodded to Jonah to begin in her stead.

"Good morning, Miss Lucerna" says Jonah pushing the coffee table a little bit away with his long legs to be able to sit more at ease... though the look Rosemary gave to the table would give a keen observer the impression that she would soon move the table again in the previous position "When I send young Jared to your shop, I never expected he'd do us the service of bringing you for a visit. Is Lady Aewyn doing well these days?"

"He... heheh... hehehehe... so that's how it is, Sister" says Efestos, almost spitting out the title... putting his hands on his pockets, licking at his lips... he seemed outwardly calm and he never stopped grinning... however, the red glow behind his sunglasses only got more and more vivid as he stared at Mary. There was no mistaking it... she had made him furious. However, at the moment CE broke into the church and his attention was moved from the sister to the big buy and then his underlings beaten to hell outside.

"Heh, too long playing with my boys it seems... the party is over now... and I'm going home" says Efestos, signalling for the fat man, the only remaining member of his gang to leave with him "Thank you for entertaining them with the beisbol, boy... I'll be sure to remember paying back the favor"

With that, if they are not stopped the thugs would leave... Efestos having the fat guy load up his barely conscious friends onto the car before he enters through the backdoor and the drive away from the parking lot... leaving the Church at peace for now.

C.E. just watched silently as the men left. Partially because he was wounded, but mostly because that horrible feeling in his gut came back in force once the man looked at him again. Beisdes, if the man wasn't lying, then C.E. would rather deal with the retaliation later after resting and getting stitched up than now after a fight. Though he had a feeling he wasn't lying. In this town there was a hundred ways to find someone just without magic, C.E. didn't want to think about how that number would grow with it. He would definitely be seeing him again.

Walking towards the nun, C.E. noted that she didn't seem hurt, but see looked rattled somewhat. Sitting down on a nearby pew opposite the unknown girl, finally relaxing after the fight, he looked up to the nun and said "You two alright? Did he try to pull anything?"

Connie's focus on Nimue pretty much vanished the moment the tart was in front of her, she was about to take her first nibble but Mark grabbed it.

"Hey, what's the big idea!?" a very annoyed Connie sent to Mark.

Frank replied "It'll look weird if you eat it now, considering you're invisible to most people. You can have it in the car."

"Okay, I won't do anything that would look weird..." Connie didn't feel like being a yesrat like at the bank though. She knew something that would ordinary to the mundane folks in the cafe but would greatly annoy Mark, another thing she can do with her link.

In an instant, Connie forced Frank to switch to his rat form. The sudden change caused him to knock the bar stool over, landing on the ground. Thanks to his amulet, Frank like he did before the accident, just some guy who fell over but in Nimue's eyes, she saw Frank had grown a bit of fur.

Maria blinked in surprise. An hour ago, she had been thinking she was in for four years of boredom in a nowhere town. Now, she was being invited by a ditzy yet good-hearted woman she had just met to go search for who-knows-what. This was absolutely crazy.

"Sure, why not?" she responded.

"She's doing well, sir," Lucerna said, taking a seat on a comfy, threadbare couch. "Sleeping at the moment; we had a busy night." She glanced at Jared, unsure if she wanted to bring it up in front of him... but whatever was building wasn't going to have the same consideration for his age. She looked around at the elder Greyfields, feeling their attention on her. "I trust you all felt the magical flash several days ago? We were investigating it. Here -" She held out a sprig of peacebloom, its green leaves flush and full and its white blossoms vibrant. "I picked this this morning, by the river," she said grimly. "There shouldn't be any peacebloom here at all at this time of year, much less any in full bloom. Something is happening in this city, something big. Perhaps something dangerous."

Mary put her head in her hands. She needed a moment to herself. She was not used to such excitement and she had alot to take in. Beyond her own emotions which she needed to sort out, there was now a mysterious girl which she had to help, a group whose bad side she seemed to have gotten on, and above all a threat of war to this small town. Mary let out an exasperated sigh then put her hands together. She said a small prayer for the safety of the people in Volwick and asked God for the strength and endurance to do what she can in the coming trials. It was enough to calm her down and get her refocused.

She turned to C.E., all smiles again. "I'm sorry I did not mean to ignore you. I'm fine, he didn't do anything to me. Oh, but that girl. She was stuffed in a bag." Mary rushed to the girl's side, clearly concerned, and checked to see how she was doing. "Miss? Miss are you alright?"

It was Rosemary who reached out to inspect the Peacebloom, nodding her head to confirm the rarity of the finding this time of the year. Grandma Greyfield considered the words even as she kept trying to coax into sleep the little bundle of joy in her arms.

"Indeed, we noticed it as well" says Jared's father "Well, it would be hard to ignore it... more so those who know the secrets. I've spent personally more than a little time since trying to understand the event... however, beyond measuring the amount of energy released, I haven't gone much farther. It's origins still remain shrouded in mystery... Though I do worry about those circulating rumors of wish granting. Those only attract trouble"

Church

The young lady didn't respond to Mary's words... at least not at the moment. She just lay where she was set, her tan face a little red, her breathing short and a bit pained. Her whole body seemed to be a little too warm... and the cut on her neck kept bleeding but a little bit. She was a pretty young woman, likely why the thugs picked her for an offering.

General Information

Should Renee be brought to meet this Sue character, they would be found on a small residential pocket near downtown... old apartment buildings on a zone that while not particularly dangerous did seemed like it had seen much better times. On one such apartment buildings, one the seventh floor, apartment 713, Sue could be found.

C.E. wanted to believe Mary, but her composure was clearly rattled. Looking at the other girl didn't help her case to him. She looked out of it despite the events that led her here, and the wound on her neck sent off alarm bells.

Looking from the girl back to Mary, C.E. tried again. "Mary, who is she? What happened here?"

Lucerna nodded grimly. "I haven't had much contact with others in the past few days, but even we've heard rumors circulating," she said, accepting the peacebloom back from Rosemary with a grateful nod. "It's dangerous. Entities with just enough power not to know better will be bleeding out of the woodwork to take advantage of it, and once they find it to be false, they'll start throwing around their resources for other purposes."

Lucerna took a breath, then plowed ahead. "Aewyn doesn't know I'm speaking to you about this, but I can't imagine she would be in disagreement. This city needs protectors - a police force, a militia. Something to keep the streets safe at night."

"I think she has a fever." Mary placed one hand on the girl's fore head and other on her own. She quietly retracted them when she realized her lack of body heat made her a poor control for gauging the girl's temperature. "The cut doesn't seem to bad, though I should clean it so it doesn't get infected. I did smell brimstone earlier which may suggest magic was at play, and the effects magic has on a person is not always so readily apparent. I'll keep her here for now, but if her fever doesn't go down..."

Mary turned her attention from the girl back to C.E. "Its a good thing you came back Mr. lash. It seems in the short time you were away some information on that mysterious light came up. That man who was in here, Mr. Efestos, it seems he is part of a group who is also interested in that light. As it stands, war breaking out in our little town is now a very real possibility, and that man thought I had something to offer their group besides prayers. This poor girl was meant to be used as a bribe to get me to join their group." Mary let out a small chuckle "I guess taking the girl and still refusing their offer is a bit rude mannered. But since this girls well being was on the line...Oh! Mr. Lash you are bleeding!"

"Hmm?" Nimue blinked as the newcomer stepped into the conversation, and shook her head. "No, not quite; I said I have a friend who I'd trust more than the papers in this regard... oh, but since you're here, did you happen to catch the bright light that appeared in the sky a few days ago? Or any of your friends?" she added, glancing over at Cathy for a brief second.

C.E waved off Mary's worry. "It's okay, it just needs some stitches. Nothing an ER visit can't fix. That or one of my aunties in my neighborhood used to be a nurse. Right now, we gotta worry about her." C.E. stood up and went to take a closer look at the girl. She looked exactly like the kind of girl that dissappears and never gets found, the kind that's young enough to get tricked and not realize it until it's too late, and old enough for the police to say that it was a clearly teenage rebellion and not bother to look until it was way too late. Though he was worried for her health, C.E. was glad that Mary saved her. He could probably ask around and try to find her family.

But that war talk worried C.E. to the bone. And if they were willing to barge into a church and recruit a vampire that lived under the Lord, then he could believe that at least something big was coming. And whatever that was, Mary had just turned it down, and he had just barged in on uninvited. That wasn't something groups like that tended to be quiet about. And he didn't see any signs that Mary wasn't alone. This church didn't exactly feel like a sanctuary at the moment.

"I don't think either of you should stay here," C.E. said after a moment. "Guys like that don't like to hear 'no'. Guys like that don't like to think about you sayin' yes to someone else either. If he comes back, I doubt it's gonna be nice."

"I'm not passing on, damn it!" Cristoph growled at her as he sidestepped around her lunge before taking a swing at her head with a strong fist.

His years on the force before he died saw that he had to stay in shape, due to it being in a time where it was important to actually be able to catch up with a criminal, and beat them down as well. While undead, he had no fear of losing his edge, compounded by the lack of any need for restraint, since his body could not feel pain. At this point, his fist would feel like getting hit by a small car, one she had willingly run into.

"I'm afraid I can not abandon my duties here, Mr Lash. If there is a war coming then people are going to need a place they can go for safety, a place like this church. If someone needing sanctuary were to come here only to find it abandon with no one to help them...no, I can not have that. Still, you may be right. It may be safer for the young miss if she were somewhere else. I wonder where safe is for her." Mary stroked the girls hair, for whatever comfort it might bring. "Ah, if you will excuse me, I am going to go get my first aid kit." With that she got up and went to another room.

She returned a short time later with a tin box with a red cross on it and handed it to C.E. "I'm afraid I don't have something to stitch that nasty cut with, but perhaps you can use something in here to clean your wound or stop the bleeding. At least something until you get proper treatment" The box was filled with an over abundance of band aids, but did have more useful items like bandages. "If you will excuse me once again, I am just going to go get something to clean the young miss' cut." Mary disappeared into another room again before returning with a bowl of water, a hand towel, and a Garfield mug. Between her close encounter earlier and C.E.'s open wound, Mary could not help but want a second breakfast. After taking a sip, Mary sat beside the unconscious girl and began cleaning her cut. "Mr. Lash? Would you happen to know a place where this girl may be safe?"
