Well, there is the availability thing. As it stands, to play it legally you'd have to track down a Japanese cart and either dump the rom or add in the translation patch, either of which requires specific hardware.

Who in their right mind is worrying about the legality of emulating a game they have no practical means to play physically?

Honestly, everyone who cares about playing it themselves probably already has. Now, if the goal is to get others to play it, those who don't care enough to go through either the legal hassle or other routes...

Presumably people who care about the law.

If they ever do officially release Mother 3, there's going to be so many debates between Nintendo's translations vs the fan translation.

One thing of note is that the Fan Translators are more then willing to let Nintendo use it officially if they want to.

I think there would be some legal problems with Nintendo doing that.

A Mother/Earthbound trilogy remastered release would be dope, NGL.

Mother 3: the game whose localization is so desired, even Terry Freaking Crews wants it.

He wants it so bad, he referenced it in his Old Spice video game-themed mega-collab video. Seriously.

Btw the complete video has references to Super Mario Bros. 3, Donkey Kong Country, Super Smash Bros., Shantae, and Rhythm Heaven and is 16 minutes long. Can *you* handle the high-octane?

(Side note: TIL that a lot of Crews' Old Spice commercials were from Tim and Eric. Learn something new every day, eh?)

A heavily redacted contract with Nintendo has been released through the Epic v Apple court case where Nintendo requires anyone working with them to not be working with organized crime groups.

In an interview with Fast Company, Furukawa said: “Animation, in general, is something that we are looking into, and not just [the Mario series].”

That first article just feels like a "Thanks, Captain Obvious" kinda thing, I don't think people were particularly suspecting that Nintendo has Yakuza members in their dev teams.

It's probably for liability's sake on their end. So if a partner ends up getting in legal trouble, they can just say "yeah, here's proof we didn't endorse that."

There was actually a recent thing where both Namco and Netherrealm Studios pulled out of a fighting game tournament that it turns out was sponsored by a front for the Russian mob. You can never be too careful, it seems.

There are also RUMOURS that Konami is ALLEGEDLY directly involved with the Yakuza.

... I mean, I probably should be surprised... but I'm not.

As much as I condemn Konami's decisions in the last six years, that would be a very serious accusation that can only be justified with absolutely clear evidence.

Yeah, I joke, but this really isn't something to be taken lightly.

Sega has long been rumored to have ties to them due to their hand in the arcade scene and I've heard anecdotally that Koei-Tecmo made some of their early games big sellers by getting yakuza to lean on retailers to carry them.

And Nintendo's own Yamauchi gave the public a fake release/shipping date for the SNES I think so that the yakuza wouldn't try to steal the shipments after he turned down their protection racket.

Woof. Baller move.

^note baller: adjective, extremely good.

Lets not forget that Gunpei Yokoi, the name behind the Virtual Boy, was coincidentally fatally t-boned in traffic by a known member of the yakuza shortly after the Virtual Boy's failure.

Pretty sure that’s a myth.

Apparently that's total bunk, unless the tourism industry has strong ties to the Yakuza...
