New Design and Code Update - January 8, 2015

Go To

Tropers - The first of many exciting updates to TV Tropes is upon us! In this update, we focused primarily on making the header and side navigation bars consistent throughout the site. We also reworked a ton of the backend code to allow for easier and more rapid development as we move forward.

Some of you may love the new design, others may hate it. Either way, we would love to hear from you below. We are listening, I promise.

If you have a bug to report, please use the designated thread on the Tech Wishlist and Bug Report to let us know about it.

Now get back to Troping!

I would like the "return to main forums" back at the bottom, since I don't use watchlists, but if it's too much of a hassle for such a minor thing, I'll adapt.

Can't log in on the phone because the captcha box is actually all the way on the right side of the page and will not display. I have not found any way to scoot it over.

[up] I have the same problem. All the forum titles, if I want to go the Film section or something, are pretty much hidden from my view and I can't scoot them over.

And this is an improvement from the old design, how? At least there it was clear enough that I could access them.

What devices are you using. If you can attach a screenshot we will be able to fix it a lot faster.

Yeah, some of quotation marks (single and double) seem to have randomly turned into question marks while others have not.

In addition, some people still don't seem to be able to log in.

I wouldn't be surprised if the log in problem was at least partially from everyone having to log back in for the first time in forever, it might get better once more get logged in.

While I don't have any problems with the new appearance, I'm wondering if there will be any new changes that aren't purely cosmetic?

I wasn't able to log in at first, but now I can, and if I may say so, my avatar looks gorgeous against that royal blue header. grin

I like the new look. Browsing on Google Chrome, on Windows 8, and I haven't experienced any bugs or reverting to the old system.

Finally logged in after trying for an hour!

I noticed that on a history page, the edit page and go back buttons seem to be switched. it's really throwing my muscle memory off.

Also, it's REALLY hard for me to find Recent Edits or... where ANYTHING is because the troperville/toys/tools stuff is squished by default, and Recent Edits seems to have outright VANISHED. o_o

I was logged off the site and it took me 20 damn minutes to get back in.

Is this trying to endear me to the new look? It's not working.

Issues so far: (at least when browsing on my GF's mac)

1. I haven't found an easy way to get into my watch list. Apparently if I elect to add a trope and click on watch again that'll take me there, but unless I'm being dumb and missing something obvious, (entirely possible, by the way) there isn't a direct way to get into it.

2. Kinda missing the option to search forum posts by troper. I'd understand if it's not continued as it has some seriously sneezy online stalking potential, but as someone who occasionally screws around with Forum Games, it's nice to be able to have an alternative to using a thread watchlist to check if something I took 5 seconds to reply to while killing some time and distracting myself from school/work/clinical hours/needy friends/bills got a response.

3. Purely an aesthetic thing and a matter of taste, but the large sidebar is kinda jarring when trying to read a trope or work page, although I may just not be used to it yet and may wind up filtering it out if it's kept in its present form.

Chalk me up as another "Took an hour to log in." But I'm in on my laptop now. I can't sign in on my android phone though; the login button just ain't there.

Also I can't vote on the crowner below. It says I already voted even though I haven't.

@Drewski: I'm on an Android so I can't provide a screenshot, sorry. Slightly older version, but even so it's up to date enough to do most things.

Also all the text in posts is smashed to the right as well

so
all

look
like
this.

Larger words containing six characters also sometimes get cut off.

Something I'm having trouble with. When I shrink a window to one side of my screen it is no longer compacting the text so Ihave to scroll left and right to read anything.

All of the text is scrolling off of my 768x1028 screen when it didn't do so on the old layout. I constantly have to hit the right arrow key to see anything, and overall everything seems right-aligned. I mean, it's better than Youtbe's left-aligned video player, but middle-aligned would be better, I think.

Now that I've finally managed to log myself back in, can I just say I'm really pissed about how my complaints regarding that blue bar at the top were completely ignored. Like, really pissed. It's ugly, it's eye-catching in a bad way, it pushes, and it's just generally an eyesore. Either nuke it from orbit or push it back so it's only around the logo or the user thingy in the upper right. Or both. Or something. But, you know, I'm the only person in the entire world who can't stand the thing, so why should my opinions matter.

Another thing I don't like is how articles with no pictures now have ads where the picture would go. Just... why?

I know you're focusing on the header and login problems(It took me more than twenty time to get in), but I dislike how pages are now stretched out. By that I mean in the old layout I only had to scroll up and down. Now I have to scroll left and right to be able to actually read the tropes. Well, scroll right to read the tropes and scroll back left to view the sidebar stuff. It's much more of an inconvenience than you think.

I have a dozen other things I dislike, but I can wait patiently.

It would be nice to have an "Add Thread to Watchlist" button at the bottom of the page, as I generally go to add threads to my watchlist after I've read through them.

@113 If you go to your profile page, the watchlist is accessible from the bar of links across the top.

Also, I'm pretty sure the sidebar isn't actually any bigger (in terms of width) than the old one was; it just looks different.

The text is compacting when I shrink my browser to one side of the screen and I don't have to scroll to the right. Of course, my screen resolution is 1920x1080.

I've always thought TV Tropes was a "blue" sort of website. I think this color was a good choice. That being said, the sheer thickness of the bar reminds me of Wordpress or generic Wikia. That's not a bad thing, necessarily- just different. All in all, this new layout is a welcome change. Maybe now my friends won't think I'm too strange for spending my life here.

On a couple non-header related notes, I am liking the alternate titles list at the bottoms of the trope pages, but the ads in the place pictures usually go are jarring.

So I don't suppose that adding the option to still use the old design is a reasonable request, right? Sorry, it's just that the new layout is confusing, clunky and I really don't understand why it was necessary. Chances are I'm not the only one who feels this way either.

[up] You're not alone.

Apparently one of the reasons they switched to this design was that it'd look better on mobile devices. I'm writing this on an iPad. The old design looked better on it than this does.

I used the old site on the Wii U gamepad and it worked fine. maybe this could be an optional mobile-exclusive design?
