New Design and Code Update - January 8, 2015

Go To

Tropers - The first of many exciting updates to TV Tropes is upon us! In this update, we focused primarily on making the header and side navigation bars consistent throughout the site. We also reworked a ton of the backend code to allow for easier and more rapid development as we move forward.

Some of you may love the new design, others may hate it. Either way, we would love to hear from you below. We are listening, I promise.

If you have a bug to report, please use the designated thread on the Tech Wishlist and Bug Report to let us know about it.

Now get back to Troping!

If it's worth anything, I liked it.

I don't get it, the design never changed for me. Did I miss it?

Do it again, I wasn't looking

>Alright, now you're just wining It's spelled "winning." And god that's an old meme.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who sees anything wrong with that statement.

So, when is the ETA of it coming back online?

Still digging through the code. Someone, somewhere, wrote a query that is crashing the database. Hopefully it will be fixed by tomorrow.

So somebody took it upon themselves to sabotage the new site?

If they can do it once, they might do it again...

[up]Programing is not easy and there's no way to check what the code will do other than running it.

I still think that just maybe the database is crashing for a reason. Fate is committed to not letting it go through, maybe.

As someone even just superficially involved in software development, I can tell you this is not an uncommon occurrence. At all. And then there's debugging introducing new bugs...

Okay, now that I was finally able to log in, I can say this:

The new layout isn't that bad. But the YMMV, WMG and other sup-pages that have different colours having the same colour kind of irks me.

Also, sloooooooooooooooooow loooooooooaaaaaaad.

The new design is quite laggy and wouldn't initially let me log in, but since that is not unusual when a new design is being tested there's not much to actually properly complain about here. tongue

When it comes to the colour scheme and general representation, I must admit I preferred the old site's colours (but that's just because I really love black) and I'm a little uncomfortable with the size of the banners (it would be nice to have them be a bit thinner/smaller so they don't look as menacing and attention-seeking). Other than that though I think the layout changes are quite good, it's just the colour scheme and the sizes I'm still in limbo about.

...Where do I even begin with this?

The load time is slower than a snail.

It took me a damn hour to log in.

On my iPad, I can't see any of the threads in the forums, and I can't move it like normal on an iPad.

This thing is so damn flawed it's a wonder they let it go through.

The new layout ought to be junked.

Yeah, I had trouble logging in myself.

Anyway, I like how the new site is looking— a bit more colorful and updated now, though sluggish to load sometimes.

It's...iffy. I'd prefer the old one. An option to change it back would be nice.

A complaint I have is that the bottom-most ad is located above the index navigation tool, which feels like an "interruption" between the page's main body and the indexes. Wasn't one of the planned upgrades "Less annoying ads"?

Don't stress about the how slow the site is. We had an issue with the code that checks for new PM's to display the little notification on your avatar in the upper right hand corner (yes, one query like this can bring down the whole site). We are working on it now and it should be fixed within the hour.

Also, I am going to attach a crowner to this thread with two additional options for the top color scheme. We would still need to change the fonts and buttons up there, so just focus on the main color here. And we are removing the huge bottom blue banner sometime really soon.

I took me quite a while to get logged in and then it randomly logged me out.

The new design... I wasn't too keen on it during the Kickstart project but I guess I can adjust. After the log in and speed issues are resolved, I'd very much like the fora options (the bar at the top that has the "Thread Watchlist" button) to be at the bottom of the page as well as the top. Having to scroll all the way up in order to return to my Thread Watchlist is rather annoying.

Also, the fact that the top most bar says "Forums" rather than "Fora" saddens me to no end.

Personally, I'm fine with how the website currently looks (though it does remind me of Windows 8 a little).

I think it's fine for the most part. My biggest problems are the ad at the bottom and how much more annoying it is to get to my watchlist (the only way I see is clicking on my profile name and then the watchlist). It could be something that's not loading for me, but I liked being able to get there from anywhere.

My biggest complaint is the banner at the bottom since it's huge and ugly but that's being removed soon so it's all good.

Being able to toggle spoilers quickly and easily is very nice, though.
