D So D also caused problems, I think. The long Synchro arc threw off the pacing really bad, and the next arcs suffered for it.

It's funny that both series he was involved in are unpopular as a whole. Especially noticeable when you remember that both 5D's and Arc-V had arcs that ran too long (Crash Town and the Synchro Arc), and these arc corresponded to some movies that were being made at the same time (and probably further contributed to their poor quality).

I don't think there's anything wrong with Synchro or Pendulum summoning, but I suspect the reason we don't see them much outside of series he's involved in is because of that unpopularity, which is a damned shame.

So he basically ruined those two concepts, and future series will likely continue to downplay them. I'm betting if we ever see either style again, it will be either by a total scrub, or a villain who exists to be beaten by the heroes (who then claim that only amateurs use those summoning methods)...

Do we know what the fans think of Pendulum and Synchro in the actual game? Did you play the cards? Do they still touch the cards, or are the feelings towards the series they were released in sour people towards them?

I wouldn't say Synchros have been completely dumped, though - an upcoming episode of VRAINS has the word "Tuning" in the title, and with CYHO and SOFU spotlighting Ritual and Fusion Summoning respectively, it seems logical to assume that the next set will focus on Synchros.

Tuning huh?

That's good to hear actually.

Pendulums on the other hand, seem dead before dawn. The fact that the entire game was re-done to centre around Link Monsters (and that Linking seems to be splash-able with other summoning types) makes me think that Arc-V shot its own concept in the face and hard.

...I do wonder when we'll see more XYZ though.

Both CYHO and SOFU, as mentioned focusing on Rituals and Fusions respectively, had the following:

  • A Cyberse monster of the spotlighted summoning method from the anime.
  • A Cyberse monster of the spotlighted summoning method not from the anime.
  • An earlier theme of the spotlighted summoning method expanded into a full archetype.
  • A Link Monster that supports the spotlighted summoning method.

If Savage Strike continues the trend with Synchros, I imagine we'll see Xyz and Pendulums in the sets after that.

Well, that's good to hear.

I doubt they'll try and give equal time to all the summoning methods the way that Arc-V did (since apparently that was really taxing or something), but I'm glad to know there's the possibility that they won't forget old methods.

I do hope they do try and do a series with a bit of everything again, since I think seeing how all the different methods bounce off and interact with each other is a great thing to spotlight.

[up] Indeed. Hopefully there will less production problems as well as no films to get in the way.

Speaking of new films if DSOD is the Yugioh equivalent of Battle of Gods, what would be the Ressurection of Frieza analogue?

[up] Depends on what the next movie is, really. And even then, there's a question of "Will it exclusively and/or mainly focus on the Duel Monsters cast?"

I was a big fan of Yugioh Abridged for a long while, and I've begun watching the OG show dubbed on a whim...

It's surprisingly decent. I think I would have loved it as a kid. I am skipping some episodes, but it's been largely solid so far. The voices are pretty hilarious too, to be honest. Most annoying thing is probably how weak of a duellist Yami Marik is; there has been at least one occassion where Mai could have beaten him just by declaring an attack; would it have been so hard to have him have a monster on the field that she needed the Winged Dragon of Ra to get past?

Dark Marik is something of a Paper Tiger, yeah. That becomes more evident the more you see him play.

Yeah, this very wiki takes note of his skills quite a few times. He relies on Ra way too much, though there is the justification that it is the case since he knew he would have to contend with two other God Cards. Even with that context removed, he still comes off as caring more about inflicting pain than actually winning.

Also... I get it's a card game and they need it to be unrealistic to be exciting (heck, the very first duel is won by drawing five specific cards at the same time).

But why are they always so confident about drawing their killer monsters? Especially when they seem to spend more time waffling around to playing them than actually trying to win. It's one card in a deck of what, sixty? At least have them have some Tutor cards in their decks (cards which let you search your deck for a specific card and add it to your hand).

[up] A deck can be up to 60, but most people keep it closer to 40. But yeah, it is a bit unnecessary how some characters make a big deal out if getting one specific card since a good deck and good duelist would be able to formulate on the fly.

These are basically battle shonen using cards, so any of the same attitudes in a regular fighting series will be invoked here. What you're talking about is no different than a character bragging about their secret technique or whatever.

Also, it does seem a bit wierd for Marik to send a random rare hunter off with Slifer the Sky Dragon to take down Yugi instead of concentrating both of his God Cards in his own deck. Fantastic duel, but seemed a bit careless of Marik to do that.

[up] Fair enough, and I do know I have to make allowances for dramatic licence. It just stood out to me.

I don't mind the dramatic flair (it is why I like the series) or characters suddenly getting new cards at all. It just comes off as a bit weird how some characters put way too much focus on one card.

I find it interesting how almost every YGO anime series has had less and less episodes. DM has 224, GX had 180, 5Ds had 154, Zexal 146, and ARC-V had 148.

I wonder how many VRAINS will have.

DM's problem is that it had a manga being written as it went, leading to a multitude of filler arcs that padded out the length.

5D's, ZeXal and Arc-V have pretty standard 3-year runs.

By the way, I was correct that VRAINS will soon feature the return of Synchros.

Konami seems to put Decode Talker waaay above Firewall Dragon, to the point of releasing its alternate art alongside the other 2500 ATK ace monsters. I wonder if Firewall's brokeness has anything to do with it.

First off, just kill Yuri. Maybe have the latter, since he's closer to Z-Arc anyway, acting on his own to become whole again.

Not sure what to do after that. My thoughts are more meta (like not turning Yuzu and the Bracelet girls into Macguffins with zero agency since You Can't Thwart Stage One), and you're talking about in-universe stuff.
