The experience would have been the same for everyone logged in when the new patch, Homesteading the Noosphere hit. A sudden loss of consciousness, and when a player awoke they would be greeted by scenery both familiar and new at the same time. The scenery was much more detailed than they would remember, and more importantly, not just a two dimensional rendering of a three dimensional environment. It was a familiar part of Seven Hill, a city in the MMORPG Elder Tale. Elder Tale's map was modeled after a half scale replica of Earth, and Seven Hill was located in a location corresponding to Rome. Ancient ruins of two kinds dotted the city, some were what we would call "modern buildings" in a most dilapidated state. Others were clearly based of the ruins of Rome found in the real world, such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

Walking might also feel quite different for these players. Although a quick glance in a pond or at any reflective surface would indicate that one's face still retained the same appearance as as normal, everyone's bodies had been replaced with their in game avatars, with heights and builds possibly far different from reality, not to mention the fact that many were wearing costume's that would make even professional cosplayers jealous.

Most players, Adventurers, as they were known, for the moment were still sitting by the sides of the roads. Some crying, some having mild panic attacks, some inspecting their new bodies with looks of utter confusion. The NP Cs, called People of the Land, or Landers for short, were going about their business as usual although a few looked quizzically at the Adventurers who were usually more lively. All in all the tone of the city could be described as similar to a person who had recently received a rather nasty blow to the head. Dazed, confused, and trying to get a handle on what just happened.

A lone figure was standing at the top of the ruins of a skyscraper, gazing across the landscape of Seven Hill, from the old Roman-esque ruins, to the the Cathedral in the place of St. Peter's Basilica. It doubled as both the revival point for Adventurers and the seat for the head Lander's faith. Seven Hill was somewhat unique in that it was not only a player hub city, but also a center for Lander nobility. In fact, up until the patch preceding the current one, it was the seat of power for an empire that directly controlled Romalia and Saxe-Deustland, with less direct influence over a great deal more of Europa. At the moment the Sacred throne sat vacant, since the various prince-electors were too busy squabbling amongst themselves to convene and choose a new Emperor. Though none of that was terribly important for the moment. The real reason the figure had climbed up this high had more to do with the vial of eyedrops in his hand. He swished and stared at the liquid in the vial, silently wondering whether it would have the desired effect, or burn his eyes out on contact.

After a few more moments of hesitation, he mustered his courage, opened the vial, and applied the eyedrops. Instantly, his perception changed, allowing him to see much farther and in more detail than he had been able to before, thankfully with no burning. He scanned the horizon once more, focusing as far away as he could. What he saw confirmed his suspicions. There was no distance fog, no maximum draw distance, nor a decrease in the amount of rendered detail for objects at the limit of his vision. It was like looking out across a real landscape.

"Well, this is both the the best and the worst thing to happen ever."

If even his dreams...He looked at the crowd of people surrounding him...With any luck, his target was here...He stood up and began to walk through the crowd, When in dreams, go with the flow...And the flow was he had just been hired to assassinate another player...Named...Named...Dammit.

"H... Hmmmg..."

Brightness... it was meant to be night, why was everything so bright? She always kept her blinds closed as she played... Why was it that...

She didn't feel her chair underneath it. Nor her bed.

No, she felt the caress of grass, a soft breeze and the lazy rays of the sun over her. With difficulty, she opened her eyes, to be met with a perfect, bright blue sky...

Awkwardly she sat up, eyes open wide as her view descended upon the brightness a heart warming, familiar landscape of ruins, nature, builds and people... of great edifices, marble columns and scattered blots of color from the people and magic. A sight so often seen in pixels upon a monitor and when not, within her imagination and dreams "Seven... Hills... E-Elder... Tale?"

Thus, the Guild Master of Sacred Grace, clad in a simple looking tunic of bluish white with black trims, trousers and boots and with her blade lying sheathed at her side looked upon the world of her fantasy, blue colored eyes bright with wonder.

She then proceeded to bring a gloved hand to her face, pinching her cheek hard and pulling... the immediate pain and sheer clarity of her thoughts making her think she's not in a dream.

Awkward, everything she seemed to do right now appeared to be awkward, she grabbed onto her blade looking at it in reverence... seeing from so close up the sheer details in the thing, the faerie crystalline metal it was made of... and then used it to help herself to her feet. Though she doesn't know it, she's quite fortunate... not only is she in a body of her own gender, but her height is similar to that of the real world... though she feels much... stronger. Her body feels like it responds quicker and more fluidly to her commands... which does make her a bit clumsy as she adapts. With sheathed blade in one hand she looks at a strand of her long hair... seeing the black locks. This is the first anomaly for the world of Elder Tale... the Guild Master of Sacred Grace, Lady Erith of the Silver Light, is famous and recognizable for her pure, silver hair. However, her player Erin Miller has hair as black as a raven's feathers.

At the edge of her vision, if she wills it she can see... the interface? She sees her stats, her friend list, her equipment... all of it hovers like holograms before her if she but reached out... the menus pop out. Commands and buttons...

"A-Am I... in the game?" She wonders, closing her eyes and shaking her head... she then looked at the city she loved, touched a tree next to her... she was standing on a lone hill overlooking the city, on a small park. It felt so real... as did the warm sun, the breeze caressing her face. As she focused away from the interface it seemed to vanish from her field of view... leaving her sight unobstructed to look at the wonders below. This... there was an interface but she had just downloaded software. There was no virtual reality around that could even begin to replicate what she was feeling. She was set to play her game on her PC, with keyboard, mouse and just a headset.

Whatever had happened, she was on the world of Elder Tale... on beloved Seven Hill. She felt terrified and euphoric at the same time... her blue eyes filled with tears as her most deeply held fantasies turned real... while at the same time, she didn't understand a single thing "D-Damn this... what the hell is this? What is even happening? It's so bright and beautiful... but how is this even possible?" she wonders, wiping her tears into her sleeve.

Emrys slowly picked himself up, leaning on the staff in his hand, 'Wait, a staff?' he thought, before looking himself and the world around him over. He was clad in a long robe with a cloak and gloves, holding a staff, and with a heavy ring on one finger. Was he dreaming or was he really inside of Elder Tale? He looked over the staff, his eyes picking up the arcane symbols slowly moving throughout the not-wood that made up the Phantasmal Stave. He apologetically nodded towards the people walking around where he'd fallen when he'd apparently entered the game. Anyways, he did have an errand to run, he needed some health potions just in case.

Bright light streamed through Proton's eyelids, causing him to open his eyes with a yawn, with his arms to rub them. He bumped into glasses right in front of his face, causing him to open his eyes in confusion. Had he fallen asleep waiting for the update to load? He lowered his arms, sitting forward with a yawn, and froze with his mouth open mid-yawn.

Laid out before him was a massive, sprawling city. Several larger buildings stood out prominently against the urban sprawl, laid out across a disturbingly familiar set of hills. His eyes flickered across the view, connecting sights and locations, all adding together into an impossibly familiar map. Laid out before him was Seven Hills, the biggest city on the Southern Europe server of Elder Tales.

A few minutes of gaping later, he managed to close his mouth and pull his mind back into some semblance of order. This..was impossible, and yet logic said that clearly it was.

"Saints..." he muttered, before attempting to clamber to his feet. As he attempted so, he tripped over his feet, planting his rear abruptly back into contact with the ground. Glancing down to see what he had tripped over, he froze again. He definitely didn't have anything like the robes he was wearing, or the gloves on his hands, not in his closet. In fact...they looked like the items that he'd had in the game. Looking over his body, it felt...different. Longer, if that was a thing that bodies could be. He turned himself over, and shifted into a kneeling position, going at the task of standing up from a different angle. As he did so, he noticed that laying on the ground next to him was another familiar object - a staff made out of insect parts. His staff - or at least his copy of the staff.

He used it to prop himself up, rising unsteadily to his feet as he did so. He slowly and very carefully picked his way down the hill, relying heavily on the staff for support. At the bottom of the small hill was a clear pool of water, as reflective and still as glass. Leaning over, he peered at his reflection in the liquid.

Well...that was his face. Kind-of. The features were familiar, the color of the eyes, and the glasses, and his hair was the right color, but the rest....the rest was wrong. The hairstyle that his character had worn wasn't one that was easily possible to replicate in real life - it went straight back, in almost a cone sticking out and back from his head. On top of that, his face was covered in a set of light green tatoos that were thick enough to cover more than half of the visible skin. They even seemed to go down his neck, and fumbling to remove one of the gloves, he determined that yes, they extended at least as far down to his hands. Sliding the glove back on, he stumbled backwards, looking at the landscape before him.

"It's not a game...it's not a game?" He started stumbled forward, not even sure where he was going for the moment. This was too much for him to handle all at once, at least for now. Maybe he'd run into someone who knew what was going on?

"....?"

A figure stood in the mouth of the Cathedral, mouth flapping open and shut in confusion. The last thing they remembered was logging into Elder Tale for the first time in months.

"Is this....part of the update?"

These words slipped out of his lips before he shook his head hurriedly. He was being silly. This felt too realistic to be a game update. But then...where was he?

The area he was in looked a lot like the Cathedral in Seven Hill but that couldn't be right either. After all that would mean he had been transported into the game. Moving forward he met with another surprise as what looked like Elder Tale's game interface popped up before his eyes. Tentatively, he brought up the status screen, hand shaking slightly as he did so.

"....!"

A face that was his yet different stared back at him in the upper right of the status screen. While his hair was black it wasn't usually as thick and heavy as it appeared before him. Nor was it as long from what he could see. His brown eyes had changed to a lavender color and his skin had take on a lighter color as well. From the picture he could see silver cloth-like armor over a red colored upper shirt with gold trim, a longer black shirt with similar trim peaking out from under it.

He really was in the world of Elder Tale. He could feel the white gloves on his hands and if he had to guess he was clothed in the rest of the outfit he had picked out for his character. Silver armor over a red skirt trimmed in a golden color. White thigh highs ending in black heels. Underneath all this was yet more clothing. An open white shirt with oversized sleeves the cuff containing a thin orange line and a thicker black and orange line at the edges. A similar colored bow tied the shirt together. Underneath it would be a black tank top and a black shirt held together with a cross-cross of two belts similar in color to his sleeves. Completing the ensemble were two ribbons holding part of his hair in pigtails and a black collar around his neck.

Patting himself down, he took stock to make sure this was true. Moving his mouth in shock he made sure to walk slowly as due to playing a female character he was now significantly shorter and of a lighter build than back home. After a few moments he closed out of the status screen and pulled up his friends list. The first thing to catch his eye was that his old Guildmaster was online. Hesitating only slightly, he activated the calling function.

"Please pick up."

"A-Ah!" Erin became startled as she suddenly heard a ring on her head... the familiar sound of something trying to establish a private channel to speak with her. In her field of view, a notification appeared and she recognized it at once. Wolfina? That was a name she had not seen in a little while. Gingerly, she moved her hand towards the reply button... though instead of a text prompt appearing she heard only a voice saying "Please pick up..."

"Ah... Wolfina? Is that you?" asks Erin, speaking to the air as she takes a few steps out from the shadow of the trees while thinking, not knowing it would be transmitted Wolfina is here too? What the hell happened?

His dumbfolded expression was a contrast to the behavior that most players around him showed, not because he was not surprised, but because he did not quite know how to react to it yet.

The staff he held fell on the ground as his right hand easened its grip, making a loud noise after crashing into the ground. Even so, he did not notice it until a NPC nearby picked it up, then handed it back to him educately, which instinctively made him thank that NPC as if he were speaking with someone as alive as he. How silly of me... Yet they seem so real now, don't they?, he wondered while observing the other NP Cs' routines. Some children running around a fountain in the center of the city, the merchants listening to their clients' orders and delivering goods, a courier passing by on his horse and delivering cards to players and NP Cs... Their actions seemed almost too intelligent. That's what you get when you have a fertile mind and long hours of play, I guess

Instead of shock, Alberich reacted with the same surprise that a child would upon receiving their most wished christmas present, his fascination weighed more than the oddity of the situation. The sun's warmth and the breeze that moved his cape felt so real... And when he started strolling around the city, he felt in direct control of his limbs, which was completely different from the faux direct control of his character. That is, if he could call Alberich his character - they felt one and the same, and that would be probably true if he wasn't perfectly conscious that he was in a game. Whatever the staff behind the game did, it was great, and he decided to explore every nook and cranny of the update immediately, starting with his status tab and finishing with the NP Cs stats read.

The interface hasn't changed much, at least, he concluded. Now then, where was I the last time I logged on..., he searched through his Quest tab and remembered the details, Oh, right. I should search for some kind of transportation there... But it wouldn't hurt to spend more time within the capital, I suppose.

“Urm... I don't think this is right.” For one, PlagueDoctor didn't wear a mask while playing videogames — why the hell would he do that? — yet now he wore a heavy porcelain mask. Blinking, the Israeli soldier brought a hand up, and saw that it was covered in a black leather glove. He rubbed the back of his head — feeling a rough hood — then a look at a puddle sealed it. He was wearing a plague doctor's robes, and the city around him wasn't his bedroom.

“Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas any more,” he told his reflection. What followed were a few minutes of experimentation — from simply running around a bit, through trying to use the interface, to drawing <Surgeon's Scalpel> from its hidden sheath and swinging it around.

That done, he sheathed the dagger with a flourish and looked around. If he remembered Rome's — no, Seven Hills', there was no denying that — geography, he was somewhere where, in the real world, the Circus Maximus stood. All around him people were crying, staring numbly at things, cursing — in shock, basically. He thought about what he himself felt and found himself to be surprisingly composed for a person who's just been thrown into an extremely weird situation. With a shrug, he began walking in a random direction.

After a while, he thought about trying to contact his guild; by himself, he was weak, but with his friends, he might be able to get to the root of this mystery. He opened the relevant menu and sighed. Only six members of <Silent Night>, aside from him, were “online” at the moment, and two of them were journeymen, still learning the game which now, apparently, became reality. Not good — not even a full raid...

By that time, he passed by Proton. Well, ran into him, to be exact, what with being deep in thought. “Apologies,” he said, absentmindedly.

"This is the last time I let my friends talk me into anything"

Aster was still trying to process what had happened in the past few minutes. One moment he was staring at a computer screen playing Elder Tale for the first time in months, the next he woke up in the world of Elder Tale and he was in his avatar's body.

Through messing around, Aster had found out he could see the various menus that he used to navigate at his computer screen. His inventory, skills, everything was there. Aster had walked to the edge of town, he wanted to know just how much this world was like the game.

"Well, I can see menus and draw my weapons, might as well get my feet wet and see if combat works like it did in the game."

Proton was interrupted from his thoughts when he pumped into someone else. "Oh, I'm sorry!" he exclaimed, glancing up.

The man (or a very deep-voiced girl?) was wearing dark black robes, with a strange bird-beaked mask over his face. Combined with gloves, there wasn't any bare skin to be seen on him. <Plague Doctor>, the floating interface over the main's head said. He shook his head from staring at the possible impossibility that was the floating screens, he looked back at the man's face. "Uh, do you know what's going on?"

Plague shook his head, once. “There are quite a few possible scenarios,” he said while looking Proton over. Level 37 Summoner (Sigilmaker), looks a bit shabby — not a first or even a fourth choice, the Assassin thought. “One,” — he started counting on his fingers — “this is a hallucination, which means you are actually a figment of my imagination. Two, we have all been trapped in an illusion — a matrix, if you will. Three, we are actually living <Elder Tale> now. Four, misleading demons.”
He paused, waiting to see what the <Bug Shaman> thought about the possibilities he voiced.

Wolfina is here too? What the hell happened? resounded in the crossplayer's mind for a brief moment. Momentarily taken aback, the person called Wolfina let silence fill the air. Resting his hands on the wall, the player continued the conversation.

The Adventurer and disreputable scoundrel Anir "Lord of Nightmare" Esrever sat perched on the lip of Seven Hills' equivalent of the Colosseum, staring blankly into the skyline in front of her. God, I'm so bored!

It had been several minutes since the scheduled update time, and nothing seemed to have happened. Late hours for the sake of playing video games was nothing new to the redhead, but she'd been extra-hyped for this expansion, to the point of staying up in spite of the fact that she'd only had four hours of sleep in the last two days. Hell, I even blacked out for a second, there. She'd been in first-person view and staring at her screen for any trace of something, anything interesting. Considering how tight-lipped the devs had been about <Homesteading the Noosphere>, they were definitely planning something big... but there was nothing different. Nothing at all. What, was it such a buggy load of shit that they couldn't even get it out on time? I want my money back!

As such thoughts and various other explicative-laced comments meandered through her head, Anir felt a warm breeze begin to ruffle her hair. I thought I left the window closed. "If you left my window open again, I swear to God... huh?" An angry glance to the side revealed that she was very much not sitting in her room, nor in front of a computer screen. It was at about that moment that the Sorcerer became aware of something off about the weight in her chest area, which was somehow being counter-balanced by an unfamiliar mass near her tailbone.

She looked down. Then behind herself. Then straight ahead once more.

"Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?"

No way! No way! No fucking way! Something soft and fuzzy brushed against her cheek as it waved past her face, soliciting an extremely uncharacteristic noise that sounded a little bit like, "Eeeeeeeeeeee!"

"Ohmygod! Ohmygod, I have fluffy tails!" She raised her hands to the top of her head on instinct. "Fluffy tails and fluffy ears!" I'm... I'm Anir?! Her grin grew until it could grow no more and the young woman was forced to let loose her feelings on this utterly insane turn of events:

"Yes! Woohoo!"

Springing to her feet, the newly transformed Fox Tail began to dash along the outer rim of the maybe-Colosseum, heedless of any danger. "Wheeeeeeeeee!" Never before had she felt so invincible, so free, so-

Wait. What if I'm just dreaming? The horror of the idea froze the foxy firestarter in mid-sprint. Unfortunately, she didn't have much more time to contemplate that train of thought, because as it turns out, suddenly halting while running doesn't do wonders for one's balance. "W-Whoa..." For several moments, she wobbled from side to side on one leg, arms flailing about, and her new appendages flailed with her. As said appendages over-corrected her ever so slightly, the next sound Anir made was probably heard for miles.

"-aaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH-OOF!"

Ow. God, that really hurt... a lot... Wait, it hurt a lot! I'm not dreaming! Fuck yeah! Her euphoric high returning full force, the firey woman stretched out a hand as she picked herself up off the ground, and was met with yet another amazing sight. "Holy shit, a GUI! Wait, screw that, I still have tails and ears! Oh yeah, baby! This is the best thing ever!"

Grabbing the nearest person by the shoulders - it happened to be a young Lander woman selling flowers - Anir poured out her excitement. "Did you know?! I have fluffy tails! And fluffy ears!"

"U-um," the flower girl stammered, "Yes, if you say so Miss, it must be so."

"Damn straight! Fluffy ears and tails! Incredible!" The redhead nodded vehemently, releasing her captive audience and walking away just as quickly.

"The world is beautiful! I LOVE BEING ALIVE!" she announced to the cheerful blue sky, looking up and spreading her arms as if to embrace it.

The voice of Wolfina resonated strongly within Erin's mind... not even feeling as if they were speaking through a headset or close by. It felt as if she could talk straight into her mind... and the intake of breath after what she thought... Erin tried to reply not with words but inside of her mind No, I have no idea... I just suddenly woke up in here. And... well, if you can see what I see... no, I don't think this is a game. We bought no hardware... it was just an update on machine. There is no technology that could replicate... being here. Somehow... somehow it seems like we're in Elder Ta- Transmits Erin... right before she lets out both in her mind and with her mouth a cry of pain as she feels the strike of a rapier hitting her.

"A-Ang..." She cries out, taking a few steps back looking down at the blood... and at the man that had wounded her. She... she was bleeding and it hurt remarkably little for what must have happened... h-had he stabbed her with that rapier? She wonders "T-The hell are you doing!?" She asks, stepping back again... holding her sheathed blade still in one hand... and then moving her hand. Her armor... she wasn't wearing her armor. With haste she tried to access her inventory, equipping her precious plate.

The moment that Crimson's weapon made contact with Erith, a trio of magic portals formed in mid air around him. Several intimidating NPCs clad slowly floated through the portals and formed a ring around Crimson. Each wielded a large halberd, and was clad in heavy white armor covered in golden runes, with a purple cape. These were the "Royal Guards" as they had been known in the game, and would appear to stop anyone who tried to engage other players in the designated safe zones. Their capabilities were far beyond that of a player, fighting back was pretty much death sentence.

In an almost robotic monotone, the one standing between Erith and of the guards demanded, "Please cease and desist combat actions within this zone. Attempts to resist will be bet with no mercy."

Proton's question posed a dilemma. On one hand, Plague very much wanted to understand this new happenstance, and he couldn't do it with the forces he had at hand. On the other hand, asking the <Bug Shaman> to join forces with him might show weakness.

As he walked Emrys idly scrolled through menus and composed P Ms to a few of the other level 90s he saw were online asking if they had any clue on what had happened or if they wanted to meet up for a strategy meeting later on at the Cathedral. It would be good for the high level players who were mostly well known in the community to meet up and discuss how to help stop people panicking as much as possible. Also while everyone was together, he could trawl around for any notable events he may have missed.

Wolfina nodded along as Erin told him her story. However it wasn't long before his old friend cut off midsentence with a cry of pain.

Lady Erith...? What's happening? his thoughts flowed out towards his former Guildmaster as he deftly opened up his inventory. Summoning his staff, he gripped it awkwardly with both hands. While it had been easy to hold ingame he was still getting used to his new body. Do you need backup, Lady Erith? I'm...at the Cathedral if it's not too far.

He shifted slightly as he awaited her response. Surely that cry of pain meant she needed a healer, didn't it? While he may not be the best class for the job he would do his best.

The Guard's response to the apparent aggression was swift, as it raised it's halberd and brought it down on Crimson with no hesitation. The attack drained about three-quarters of Crimson's HP, and sent him flying backwards several meters. Thankfully, despite having lost more than half his HP, Crimson wouldn't feel 'half dead.' Getting up and moving around would still be very much possible, although there would be serious pain from the wound he received.

Without so much as another word, the Guard that had struck the first time began walking towards Crimson again, raising his weapon high for a final strike.

For those brave enough to venture outside the city, the zones in the immediate vicinity were full of low-leveled monsters, mostly wild dogs with a few eagle-like flying enemies, ranging from level 1-10, depending on how close you were to the city walls. The terrain was a hilly grassland, dotted with trees here and there, with a few roads that, at least for the moment, were deserted aside from the occasional Lander horse and cart. It would be a perfect place for anyone who wanted to try out how combat worked without a mouse and keyboard, or perhaps a good place to ambush an unsuspecting player for a taste of less... predictable combat.

"And where exactly are you off too, 'Dragon-Slayer-Scholar'?" Maxwell asked Emrys as the latter seemed to be striding away with purpose. Maxwell was standing on a nearby tree branch, about four meters or so off the ground. He was looking down at Emrys with one eyebrow raised inquisitively. Most people at this point were still dazed and confused. Seeing someone walking with purpose piqued Maxwell's interest.

"This dream sucks." Crimson shouted, before clutching his wound hopelessly outclassed, but hey, he was agile-He was quick! He could take this sucker on. "Gimme a sec. Be right back." He told the wounded knight, before chugging a health potion, turning on his heels and sprinting
