Big Things Happening on TV Tropes

Go To

Here we go!!! After more than ten very productive years, Fast Eddie is stepping down as the administrator of TV Tropes. To Fast Eddie – Thank You! And on behalf of all of us here, cheers to a happy retirement.

Without further ado, the new Administrators are myself (drewski) and my good friend itcdr. We are youngerish TV addicts, movie lovers, gamers, web developers, and entertainment junkies with a ton of passion for the TV Tropes project and one general goal – to make this site insanely awesome!

So, what does this mean for the community and site?

  • Wiki policy: No policies are being changed. We share the values and commitment to an open, informal, breezy and fun wiki.

  • Forum policy: No changes.

  • The staff: The mods are staying as they are, including keeping all their current powers and authority. We will continue to work with the Mods and the Troper base as always.

  • The tech wish list and site development: Coding will no longer be a one-man labour of love, so more headway can be made on fixing bugs, developing new features, and generally polishing the wiki. This may take a little time to get going as we dig through several hundred thousand lines of code…thanks for that Fast Eddie…but we will get there!

Also, if you haven’t already seen the announcement - which is probably impossible - we launched a campaign on Kickstarter to accelerate new developments on TV Tropes. Check out the campaign - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tvtropes/the-tv-tropes-revitalization-project - to learn more about our plans and how you can contribute - and see the awesome rewards for your help.

Please share your questions, comments, concerns and love below.

@Fighteer: Oh, I understand that if the forum has to go, it will. I meant avoiding deleting decent threads to clear up space if they had worthwhile content, even if now locked(I.E. an old but fruitful roleplay). Assuming those don't get auto-purged. I remember a previous roleplay I was in being removed.

Of course, this is likewise assuming the thread is following the rules enough too respectively. And of course, most threads on the left side of the forums, namely the Wiki section, can often stay.

However, if there are threads to purge, possibly some older ones from Image Picking and similar stuff, maybe keeping a small history in a sandbox-like page of rejected images. Or other similar notes for things like rejected renames too. Actually, I find this small idea useful. Since a lot of old locked threads, ones we won't take action based upon(say, an image picking thread that the clock ran out on), do we need to keep those kinds around in the database? I can understand listing the images as "these exist, but are unused" so we can could suggest them for use later in a later thread or use them as ones that are examples of previous ones that will not be used.

Sorry if the wording is odd here. I'm trying to carefully explain it.

A smoothie to you, Fast Eddie, for making TV Tropes what it is today... Despite your departure, I am sure that TV Tropes is being left in the right hands.

A bit late to comment, but...

This whole change in ownership certainly suprised me. But welcome to the new admins, and happy retirement to Fast Eddie.

I already backed 55$ to the Kickstarter; I use this site enough to merit it. :P

All my questions about changes have already been answered, so I'll just watch and wait.

To be honest, there hasn't been any discussion at all anywhere about impending thread purges or disk space problems, so I don't think any such thing is going to happen soon.

I think we'll need some discussion on how to deal with WMG and Headscratchers - I can see some good arguments against both the current setup and a wiki discussion like one.

To be fair, I saw it come up last page and commented on the whole purge related thing. But never mind, then.

Anyway, I'm not against the idea of making WMG'ing or Headscratchers a forum thing, but that also means it has to be done carefully. It would require a thread for each actual work, and link to the proper one. It'd definitely take work to properly link to the most specific one, but is not impossible. It's simply a time thing.

Related, I do tend to that the difference between Fridge Logic and Headscratchers is... really hard to tell.

Neither WMG nor Headscratchers is at all suited to be put in a forum. The disagreement between their one-page/multiple-discussions format and between the one-discussion/multiple-pages one of forum threads is too great.

Personally, I have no problems with how the site looks right now, and the look we got in the video is way too wikia-lite. I'd like it if we kept an unique look and feel of the site. Down with uniformity!

Also, I really hope the current method of editing stays. It's just so simple to edit stuff right now anyone can do it and it makes it easy to start. We shouldn't learn how to use a dozen tools and three programing languages just to be able to edit stuff.

Well, I can say that they do attract thread mode, at least.

That's about all I can think of to say, then.

Well, first, it's been an honor and privilege to work with you, Fast Eddie. You know how to get me if you need anything in the future.

Second, to the new guys... hi, I'm one of the guys who helped run The Wall Will Fall. Obviously, I've been invested in TV Tropes, and continue to support its success. Related to both of those, I still have in my possession certain assets related to the ARG that TV Tropes paid for (they were backups that were thankfully never needed). I don't know if you want to do anything with them, but contact me privately if you want me to hand them over for possible limited rewards.

Will the beta just be an alternate skin of the current TV Tropes site, or a temporary fork of TV Tropes? And if it's the latter, will examples be consolidated after the beta period or will it just migrate all the stuff from the "main" wiki?

I am SO hyped for the new TV Tropes.

Are you going to change the broken namespace system? There has to be a better way to deal with franchise-first installment conflicts aside from, for example, differentiating Franchise.Super Mario Bros and VideoGame.Super Mario Bros 1.

Can I just say a huge "thank you" to Fast Eddie? He did an amazing job running my favorite website for a decade, and I can't imagine it was easy. Being in charge is a constant headache, especially when you're running a wiki. Eddie had to make calls for the wiki that were absolutely the right move, but weren't popular with big groups of people. I'm glad he had the guts to do it.

Because he had the fortitude and the strength to put up with years of emotional abuse from strangers, the wiki held on through things that might have capsized it. There's an alternate universe where the Google incident obliterated the wiki. There's an alternate universe where the wiki got sold to some big company years ago for a tidy profit and quality took a nosedive. There's a hundred alternate universes where this wiki doesn't exist or is changed beyond all recognition. The fact that we don't live in those universes is a gift from a man who had to stay up all night giving himself ulcers on more than one occasion.

We appreciate it, Eddie. Go on to your well-deserved rest. Thanks for a great ten years.

Obviously, revamping the namespace system is on the list of improvements we have in mind.

That has been (slowly) being considered/worked on for several months now. It's definitely something we want to do, whether as part of the visual redesign or as a separate update.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

Yeah, about the only thing that will be up for consideration would be works Eddie called fiat on (I'm sure you all know the main one in particular this applies to). And even then, it's not very likely they would get restored.

There's nothing preventing appeals once the new P5 people are appointed, of course, but don't expect a huge sweeping reversal of multiple decisions. A few borderline cases could be overturned, which is fair enough, but...
