Apparently the next episode is titled “Breaking Bad” and the description is “The partners escalate their enterprise to new levels.”
The obvious conclusion is that this is the inevitable episode set during the Breaking Bad time period. However, I’m going to hazard a guess that the main plot is about Jeff and his friend trying to move further into a life of crime, putting Gene in danger. Maybe there is some BB-era stuff but I think it might just be the B-plot. My guess is that the title and description are deliberate trolling by the writers.
Something weirdly funny that also emphasizes how much has changed over the course of the show is that there was a list on one of those Uproxx or Screenrant kind of sites which was the 10 main characters of Better Call Saul, ranked by how likable they were. It seemed to be judging the characters from pretty early in the show, but Lalo was on there so it must have been written at least after Season 5.
The weird bit is that Howard is ranked number 8 for being snobby and kind of condescending, only above Chuck at 9 and Hector Salamanca at 10. He's lower than Nacho, Gus and even Lalo. Meanwhile, Jimmy is at 3, behind only Mike at 2, and the number one most likable character in the show at the time of posting the article was... Kim Wexler.
Boy, it's crazy to see how much this dynamic has changed over one season.
So with the naming of the episodes recently, Vince and the showrunners have gained kind of a Trolling Creator reputation, but they generally haven't kept us in the dark about much, so I think they will reveal the contents of Gene's attempted call to Kim and what made him so upset. There are several plausible possibilities, so what do you think it will turn out to be?
My guess is that Francesca was telling a little white lie to make Gene feel better, and Kim didn't actually call her to ask if he was ok, so when he rings, she has no idea why and is freaked out that he's getting in touch with her again, especially now that he's one of the most wanted criminals in America; she panics and says that she didn't call him and that he needs to turn himself in immediately.
As for married: Jimmy and Kim's relationship has been refreshing in its complete lack of jealousy, infidelity, or other love triangle tropes. Their conflict has always arisen from worldview differences between the two of them and the way they live their lives. Again, it'd be strange to change that now.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Spoilers, but on the Trivia page for the latest episode, under Bilingual Bonus, it turns out that in the german dub of the show, you can completely hear Gene's side of the conversation in the mysterious silent phone call.
- Gene: (...) you have no idea what I did or didn't do, okay? Why don't YOU turn yourself in, you don't have to be considerate of me, I can only be hanged ONCE. Okay, look, Kim, why are we even talking about this. We're both too smart...
Looked for a second like Saul was gonna garrote Marion! Fortunately, he didn't when she called Life Alert. But now they know he was there! And Jeff is gonna sing!
