I'm reading The Adventures of Archie Reynolds and tearing it a new asshole. The book is truly amazing. It tries to combine Slice of Life with suburban kid adventure, and fails at both. The only compliments I can give it are that I like the idea (a lot actually, which is why I checked it out), and it's actually paced pretty well, in that something happens in every chapter, which is something that many authors are just not good at.

In every other respect, it utterly fails. The characters behave very weirdly. The main character's two friends do little more than follow him around and let him make all the decisions, giving them no personality. The kids don't talk like kids or act like kids - sometimes having adult interests like reading the newspaper, other times acting very immature. Much of the plot makes no sense once jewel thieves get involved.

I'd go into wayyy more detail, but I think my liveblog really gives a better idea. I even hired an illustrator from Deviant Art to bring the comedic writing to life, while also using photos I found from Google Images to highlight other absurdities.

Check it out and lemme know what you think.
