Character Halloween

Go To

In the middle of a shadowy and desolate forest, a lonely castle stands atop a crag. While its towering Gothic spires and bleak, dark walls present a foreboding appearance, tonight this castle will play host to a festive gathering involving characters of many strange and different natures from across many worlds.

But as the characters arrive for this party, they may find more than they might have been expecting. For the holiday is Halloween, and as the sun slowly sinks behind the trees and the shadows lengthen over the old castle, mysterious and spooky events will begin to occur, and the visitors will find themselves in for a Halloween night to remember...

Welcome to the latest installment of the Character Development Threads! These shared story exercises give you the opportunity to develop your characters, practice writing, and have fun alongside your fellow writers, no signups, profiles, or GM approval necessary. Want to join? If the thread's gotten long, there's no need to fear Archive Panic- just head on over to our discussion thread and say so, and we'll give you a recap of what's going on and good spots for working your characters into the thread; how you choose to do this is up to you. A little communication in endeavors such as these can go a long way towards having fun, helping others, getting that kink in your character worked out, getting your characters out of their comfort zone, or whatever you're here for, so if you ever have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask. We're all for helping each other out.

Character Halloween is a Halloween-themed casual thread. For those unfamiliar with the Character Development Threads, a casual thread is one primarily focused on character interaction; violence and physical conflict between characters are discouraged. Tonally, the thread is meant to be scary good fun: while it's Halloween-themed and spooky events are encouraged, they should be of a harmless nature rather than horror-based.

For more details, please see the trope page, which contains essential information about the thread. And feel free to stop by the CDT Discussion Thread.

I'd like to acknowledge the assistance of Crystal Glacia, Ryuhza, Night, Gault, Killer Clowns, Yomegami, Elfhunter, and Flowing Cotton, all of whom provided me with feedback during the planning of this thread.

"That's what we heard," Warren replied as he looked down at his silly looking costume. Then he looked up at the man with curious gaze. "So, if not the party, what was it that brought you here, Mr. Mossard?" He pronounced the name as best he could, but as most other nations were a mystery where he and Dakota had come from, he couldn't completely nail it- after all, he'd never even attempted that accent before.

"Look, as much as I like standing in place, we're going to turn into trees if we stay here too long," Dakota said, growing impatient. "Let's actually attempt to move on, please, or else, I might just go alone."

Knowing his friend's tendency to wander off at night looking for something to do, Warren knew she wasn't being sarcastic, and nodded a her. "I agree. Come on. We will discuss this while we find our way out of here." He didn't bother asking Henri if they wanted to move on, too. He was so used to being listened to as a leader that lowering his authority was not something he did naturally. Besides, he assumed Henri also wanted to move on.

Victoria thought about what Michael had said, "I highly doubt that I'm dead. I'm connected to Nel and she can't die."

Nel continued to shake angrily, "Screw this! I'm looking around this dump to find the jerk who invited us."

Nick chuckled at Micheal's statement. "I guess my costume isn't helping matters, is it?" He then cleared his throat, "Anywho, I'm Nick. Dressed as the Grim Reaper." He then pointed to Jackson, "This is my friend, Jackson, with adorable cat ears."

Jackson growled.

Ignoring him, he continued on, "That's Adam, my best friend."

Adam waved, "Nice to meet you."

"And I'm Marie." Marie said. "We're a group, as you can see. So are you with someone, or did you come here by yourself?"

Kaguya didn't put very much distance between herself and the group she was previously a part of before stopping and shaking her head. Just what was she doing, anyway? She knew she just said she was looking for the host, but she hadn't the foggiest clue of who she should be looking out for, or where to look. She didn't even know what to expect from the host even if she did find him (or her, or possibly it). There was still a possibility that she did indeed get thrown into a horror movie and that the host was merely trying to lure people here to...do something that was probably unpleasant to them.

Then again, it really did seem like some sort of party by looking at everyone who just came in, unless everyone's fashion sense was coincidentally very strange. Furthermore, if this really was one of Hayate's "lessons," and she was certain that it was, then a party would be just the sort of thing he'd leave her at. He'd probably want her to socialize and all that stuff, and furthermore she doubted he would intentionally put her in harm's way. Besides, what else could she do? It didn't seem like anyone else here knew where this was.

If she was going to look for the host, just standing here wasn't going to help. Since he apparently wasn't in this room, she might as well look somewhere else in this castle. The new question was that if she really wanted to do that or not. This room was not only dim, but also not all that well kept. She didn't expect the other rooms to be much better, and for all she knew there could actually be something dangerous lurking elsewhere.

She cut her thoughts short when the small floating ball of light from her previous group floated past her, opened up the doors in the back of the room (somehow, despite lacking any sort of limbs or even the necessary size), and headed on through. If the other guests were going to start wandering through the castle, then she felt a little better about going deeper herself. But only a little.

With a deep breath, she turned and was about to follow the ball of light herself when somebody else caught her eye. This person was sitting far away from everyone else, and a little ways off from her own position. She could see the somewhat off skin color plus their fairly big horns from here, but she wasn't able to make out much else about them. There was a good chance they could have been the host, actually. She shrugged and decided to take a closer look.

As she drew nearer, she was able to make out that it wasn't human, though the horns were enough of a clue of that already. Actually, it reminded her quite a bit of an oni, albeit a rather small one that was lighter colored than most, smaller than most, and with curving horns instead of straight horns. Also, it had a more bestial head than what she would have expected from an oni, and no oni she had seen had a tail (though for her part she couldn't claim to have met many oni; she'd only actually met one at this point and seen only one or two more).

Oni or not, the horns, the tail, and the outfit definitely fit the rest of the area, and on the whole this person really did look like a good candidate for the host. If it was, then she also had an explanation as to why no one had been greeted yet: it looked like it was sleeping. Apparently, it found it considerably easier to get comfier than she did, or maybe it was just a heavy sleeper. This room felt rather cold to her.

Kaguya considered waking it up. However, she didn't know how it'd react to getting woken up. For all she knew she could have interrupted a pleasant dream or something. Maybe it'd be best to wait for it to get up on its own. In the meantime, she decided to open up her third eye and start looking through its surface thoughts. She might get nothing but dreams, which probably wouldn't tell her anything unless her prodding interrupted them, but she might get some answers and it'd save her the trouble of waking the person up.

"I agree... that does sound good." Henri turned down the path, in the direction the two were originally running in when they met. "I just kinda woke up over there," he said, motioning in the general direction from whence he came.

"Rather not think about why I'm all the way out here," even though he had a gut feeling that he was going to be eating those words soon. But it's not like he had any other choice; that wouldn't be any fun, would it?

"You mean you don't know?" Warren asked, as the trio walked off. He tried to match Henri's pace, while Dakota walked just slightly ahead of the two men. "That's odd."

Warren left it at that. He didn't want to sound rude or suspicious, even if the latter was true. "Sorry. I guess I just like to know things. That's why we're going to the party. I think something is up."

The farther they walked, the more the trees began to thin out.

"I just hope there's coffee or a fireplace or something there, I'm freezing." Even though Henri had been halfheartedly clutching his arms in an attempt to warm himself, his upper half was still as icy cold as when he started, and he wasn't shivering at all. His legs warmed slightly only from the motion of walking.

At least the end was in sight. He could even see the sky now, and at least it was still light out; he could even see some bits of orange, telling him it was sundown. Or sunup? Sundown; who starts a costume party in the morning? The rest was gray, of course.

Harry looked around the room nervously, giving the chandelier in the center a particularly leery eye. He liked Halloween just fine, but after the last few weeks, it totally wouldn't have surprised him if actual ghosts suddenly jumped out of the shadows to attack.

Or at least actual Zhrrq Z'hrrn. I gotta say, I totally did not expect her to get into it like this.

Turning his attention to the other guests, he raised his eyebrows at the woman in the close-fitting armor suit. It wasn't a bad view, but what was really weird was that the suit seemed vaguely familiar from somewhere. Maybe the last time he'd been to something like this?

Hey, might as well ask.

He walked forward. "Hey, do I know you from somewhere?"

Meanwhile, Krajn stepped over to the side of the room in order to observe the other guests. Her arms were still wrapped around her torso against the cold, which was much more bothersome to a qrtxian than to a mammal.

[Castle ~ Entrance Hall]

The creature in the chair did not stir any more than it's normal slumberous twitching when Kaguya approached it. Considering how little the current noise level from the other guests and the chill in the air disturbed it, it wasn't unreasonable to believe that, if left alone, the creature would be content to sleep for quite a while yet.

The creature was indeed dreaming, though it was hard to tell if it was a pleasant dream or not. He— for the creature though if himself as male, had won the lottery, but had nowhere to cash his prize, so he had begun digging the foundation for a building, only realizing once he was half-way through that he didn't know what kind of building would need to be built, and he had dug the foundation in a circular formation instead of square, which had inadvertently lured over a group of nearby group of kids that he really didn't want to see. He tried telling them that he was busy, but he couldn't think of the right words, so he just moved his mouth without saying anything. That seemed to have no effect, and one of the kids, a small chubby boy with no hair, began to call him Gregory, so he knelt down and told the kid, "Gregory is not my name." and the kid nodded. The creature felt bad and told the chubby kid that he'd take him back home. Half way there, the kid ran off, leaving the creature by himself again, still carrying the shovel that he had been using to dig. So he stuck it in the ground and walked away himself, letting it rust, untouched for years and years and years, until all that was left of the Earth was the shovel and the bit of ground that it was stuck in, and even that was withering away, eroding through time, until it and the shovel melted into liquid, then froze into ice, which was already being written into the history books.

Strangely, the creature's dream seemed to be unrelated to the castle or the Halloween party at all, but perhaps that was simply due to the unpredictable nature of another person's dreams. Her mental exploration did not seem to disturb the creature's sleep any more than her physical presence in front of it. If Kaguya pushed beyond what was on the surface of the creature's thoughts, and into it's self-identity and memories she would easily discover that his name was Oswald Orozco. However, there was nothing in his mind about hosting the party himself.

Michael turned to Victoria as the latter spoke. “Not, uh, not you,” Michael said, “I meant the other girl… never mind. I was probably just over thinking it.”

He looked up as two more people entered, who were most definitely dressed as Japanese cartoon characters. Sadly, he couldn’t share in their kinship, seeing as how he barely had any knowledge in that field. “I guess,” he said to the man, cringing slightly at the use of the word ‘Gnarly’, “I’ve seen better though.” Well, not at his house since his family didn't really celebrate Halloween. But on the rare occasions he'd been to his uncle's house, the decorations would be much more elaborate than this.

He smiled at Priss’ awkward comment. “Well, the murderer in the story was one of the guests; so, sorry if I don’t take your word for it.”

After Nick introduced himself and his friends, Michael said, “You can call me,” what was the name of this character again? Oh right, “Hei.”

Priss peered at the man for a few moments. She didn't recognize him, and not wearing the helmet she couldn't see if his face popped up on an image-recognition search. "It's...possible." She crossed her suit's arms, which made it obvious they were too long. "Might have seen one of the others. We're generally pretty camera-shy. You thinking of blue, white, red, or green?" There were also the black K-14As of USSD, but they didn't look much like a Sabers hardsuit in Priss' opinion. Even if the newsies sometimes confused the two.

"What's your friend supposed to be?" Priss asked as an afterthought.

[right outside of the castle]

Dakota, seeing the castle right in sight, got excited and grabbed Warren's arm before taking off running with him.

"Whoa, wait a minute!" He cried, as he tried his best not to simply be dragged behind her. "Come on, Mr. Mossard! You don't want to be left behind there..."

Soon they both reached the castle, and Dakota dropped Warren. Both of them leaned against the wall for breath and let out a few tired laughs. Warren enjoyed the sprinting, despite how unprofessional it was, and as he waited for Henri to catch up,he thought about what, exactly, might be going on inside the castle.

A castle...he was itching to get inside. All the history, all the mystery, all the power of the king. Of course, he wouldn't have the last part, but it was nice to pretend.

Harry tried to think back; he was pretty sure it was during that whole 'university' thing that he'd seen the suit. "I dunno. Green, maybe? I didn't see the suit that well, and I don't remember the whole thing that well either."

He looked around at her second comment. "Who - ? Oh, you mean Krajn? We're not exactly - um, that is, she's a qrtxian. You don't have qrtxians? They're basically'' - he tried to remember the pre-Contact term - "what people used to call the greys, from UFO mythology and the like. Except they're lizards, too. Rather uncharacteristically, Henri took straight to the opportunity to warm himself and broke into a sprint, not only catching up, but surpassing them. Even the crow-filled pumpkin patch gathered very little notice from him, but the... castle. What the hell, were those gravestones? Really?!

Suddenly, he stopped as Warren and Dakota ran ahead.

"Uh. Seriously?" It didn't take him long to put the pieces together as he stepped closer to the door. Had they been dropped into one of those godforsaken Halloween specials, or something? Gravestones, a corvid-covered pumpkin patch, a frickin' Gothic castle? Yeah. Of course he was. Of course, he still wanted to hope he actually wasn't, because he still felt really, really cold. Whatever.

Once Henri had caught up, Warren led the way to the door. He calmly pushed it open, not caring to notice all the creepy details of the surroundings. It was just done by someone very dedicated to the holiday. It had to be. Ghosts and things didn't actually exist, and if they did, they wouldn't be somewhere so...cliche. So nothing stopped him from walking straight inside, with Dakota at his heels.

"Ah, so the party takes place in this hall, I assume?" He asked sarcastically, when he noticed the crowd of people. "What a creative idea."

Dakota smirked and looked around. "Nice place, though. I can't wait to go exploring."

"Not surprised." Priss observed. "Green gets out more since she went full time-"

That first thought was sadly appropriate. And I need to stop thinking in New Wave band metaphors. Something with more class at least...grunge maybe? "And...okay." Priss peered at Krajn. "I shouldn't say they're your friend? Associate? Acquaintance?" Space aliens ranked somewhat low on her list of "you're mad" at this point. Linna had managed to rearrange that list significantly of late, but aliens was never that high on the crazy list. Seemed positively likely honestly, with the robots and the robot zombies.

Henri headed inside, less than enthused. No, even once he closed the door and headed a bit further inside, it was not really any warmer in here, and he already began to feel himself cool off, erasing the results of his brief uphill sprint.

Let's see... a few teenagers, some costumed, some not- he had to avert his gaze from the kid in the white mask because masks creeped him out -an armored woman, a lady in skull makeup, a bulbous-headed alien-thing, and someone with horns. Uh. Well, he could take solace in knowing that nobody's costumes were very standout and definitely weren't made by a New York Fashion School graduate, but it was a piss-poor distraction from the fact that they were in frickin' Halloweenland. He frowned, which was about when he started smelling something. Food?

He looked up and peered into the ballroom. Indeed, there was a door across the way, and he could see what must have been a massive dining table. Nobody seemed to notice that the door had opened, either.

Harry shrugged awkwardly. "I dunno, man. Is there a word for 'person whose life you saved, who saved your life a couple times back and travels with you, but who you don't actually like much?' Because yeah... that's what she is."

He shrugged again, and put on his best devil-may-care win-dozens-of-women smile. Not that he actually thought that sort of thing would be a good idea right now, but he felt it worked just as well as 'generically charming'.

And not that it's actually ever been dozens anyway. But at least it actually deserves the plurals, which is more than Kruvane and his bogus pickup lines can say.

...Um, anyway.

Before he actually spoke, though, Harry was distracted by the sound of distant, slightly off-key piano music echoing faintly through the open doors. "Um. Do you hear that?"

Krajn glanced over the partygoers somewhat nervously, still not quite sure what to do. She felt she'd more than earned the chance to enjoy herself, and she did want to have fun. But the problem was, she wasn't quite certain what to do. This type of thing wasn't really her type of thing, at least in her life so far. And the situation wasn't improved by the fact that all of the other guests were human. There was nothing wrong with humans, and she'd expected as much after the other times she'd been through the Gates, but it still felt... strange, being surrounded by a species other than her own. As much as she hated to admit it, that was one advantage Harry had over her: growing up in the Alliance Mainstream meant interspecies interaction was just a part of his daily life.

Still, she couldn't lean against the wall and watch forever - particularly not after putting this much effort into the 'Halloween costume'. She was a Qvn Jxilkr, after all, not some ancient eggshell-clutcher. Stepping forward, she bowed slightly to the other guests. "Greetings. I am Krajn, and..." she paused. Perhaps I should begin by being straightforward. "And this is all very new to me."

"Yeah," Jackson said, "Well, if they're expecting fun, they're not gonna-" He stopped abruptly when he heard the piano.

All four teens turned their attention to the door. For a few minutes, neither one of them said anything, until Jackson broke the silence.

"Well, that's creepy." he said.

Something moved in the dark corner on the opposite side of the sleeping creature. For a moment the shadows seemed to twist and turn on their own, but then a figure appeared.

She looked mostly human and obviously female, with a few noticeable oddities. Her clothing, some kind of elaborate dress, was so dark that it was impossible to make out the finer details, and parts of it looked almost two-dimensional. Her skin, in contrast, was extremely pale and disturbingly corpse-like, and a pair of large black horns sprouted from from her forehead. The most noticeable detail was her eyes though. They where completely black and very clearly not human.

The monochrome woman looked out across the room and smiled in a surprisingly friendly manner. She was apparently not the only one who had been invited.

Henri could feel her behind him- an entrance like that doesn't go unnoticed. He turned around, too slowly to actually help had she been the threat his unconscious mind thought she could be, to find this demonic woman... with an absolutely stunning look. The dress was exquisite, almost poured-on, and her skin was a perfect, unblued white, like a young Atonari unburdened by the stresses and slings of servitude. What he'd give to design for her! His smile turned almost wistful as he went back to the task at hand, finding that when he wasn't looking, the castle had decided to screw with him. A pot of coffee sat on the table in the dining room, exactly where he could immediately see it all the way through the ballroom and out here. He could even see from this distance that it was piping hot.

"Uhm... anyone wanna join me for coffee?" He glanced over at the opened dining room door.

"Jack, you have debauched my sloth."
