that's why I want something anime original. If ALL the girls hadn't been carted of while the boys had their moments of awesome I'd have found it less frustrating, but for someone hailed as a member of "the big three" Nejire is just sorely lacking especially since the other two had their big moments in the arc and I'm still starving for more Uraraka content related to her desire to earn money
She's not chasing after a shallow childhood crush for a guy she wasn't all that close to and who treated her horribly even after never seeing him for several years (with each new meeting being worse than the last) so she's got a leg up on her in matters of dignity at least.
That said, even though Izuocha is my main ship in the series and I like the build up Uraraka is lacking in stuff outside that build up. Even an arc where she leaves school for a while to assist her parents at home due to issues their having would make me happy because even if it's not hero work its something personal to her in the same way Endeavourer is personal to Todoroki.
Todoroki, Bakugou and Izuku get the most spotlight, I get that, but at least if one girl had some consistent relevance in the greater narrative that would be great...

I absolutely cannot help but adore handsome 2D boysI'd like to think Horikoshi has plans for Uraraka and it's just not time for it yet since she's never really been the focus of an arc when even someone like Jiro sort of got that.
It's not like with Ida where you can say he peaked early with Stain and Hori might not have more big ideas for him. Ochako has never really had anything like that and it's odd because she's the female lead and in terms of consistent general relevance she's probably 4th behind the wonder trio.

the main problem with Uraraka is that, despite appearing in most arcs, she has almost never done anything of relevance. After her fight with Bakugo, which dates a few years back, the most relevant thing she did was a freaking hug (nice moment and all, but still, after a hundred or so chapters of getting Chopper-levels of relevance)
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upI mean, that depends how you define relevance. In the forest arc she fought Toga, in the Provisional License she teamed up with Deku in the first part, she was a part of the Overhaul arc unlike most people in the class, underwhelming role or not, and in Joint Training she was basically the MVP of her team. And she actually got small chunks of development out of all of those.
I'll repeat myself: She's only behind Deku, Bakugo and Todoroki in terms of relevance(at least as far as students go).

It should be noted that being a "heroine" in Japanese media carries a different notion, in that it generally means being a love interest rather than a protagonist.
I think its logical to say that Hori doesn't have any bigger plans for her at all. She'll probably get her moments in the sun like the Joint Training, but I don't think she'll ever get a central role like the wonder trio or what Iida had in the Stain arc.
Character bias exists in every media. If people looe like a character, they'll want them to be more prominent

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Bakugo and Todoroki have only sat out one arc as of now. And while they do fall out of focus every now and then, their development still happens in the background.
Mainly because out of the entire class, they're the only ones aiming for the top spot and are actively competing with each other for it
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Wish one of the girls wanted to be the very best, like nobody ever was. To fight villains is their real quest, to protect peace is their cause
Forever liveblogging the Avengers
Memes aside that's more or less my main stance. I can accept characters being pushed to the background for these three to a certain extent, but since none of the main trio are girls it can make girls in the series feel a bit underused. Shounen heroines especially tend to get the shaft a lot which is why I find her being "The most relevant compared to these other hardly relevant characters" a faint praise.
The series still has good SOL moments that help the cast shine a bit, and not everyone has the patience of Narita to handle a large cast, but most of them ultimately don't matter much really, even when they mix and match the teams only a few get a chance to get strong characterisation.

But there are many arcs where they don't play big roles like the forest training or the cultural festival. Or it's either/or like Todoroki barely doing anything in Kamino and Bakugo missing Stain.
Obviously they're far above Ochako and Ida who are the next most relevant students, but still far from a permanent feature.
On the pro hero side, the only guys with comparable relevance are All Might, Endeavor and Hawks, and the last 2 only recently.
And for the villains the only one you could call a main character is Shigaraki and maybe Af O.
So not that many top tier importance characters.
I was also saying from the start I'd like Uraraka to get more focus. All this was just an explanation for why I'm moderately hopeful that she'll get it.

Like I said, their development is ongoing and happens in the series background. So even if they aren't the focus of any given arc, they're still pretty important overall.
But yea, it is pretty disappointing how the females don't get much screentime to do much of anything and why you'd want that to change.
I'd say just remain hopeful and take what you get like the Joint Training, no matter how small it may be.
This is kind of the caveat of Shonen manga; with few exceptions, females tend to be pretty marginalized.

I get what you mean but still, appearing in an arc doesn't mean being relevant. The fight against Toga lasts 5 pages, talking included, before Ochako slams her in three panels, at the Provisional License she teamed up for a thing that's skipped quickly within an handful of panels and she was far from the MVP of the team in the Joint Training (she hugged deku and stopped him, but then got a quick fight against copycat guy). Also, take note that noone of these moments, save the hug, had any meaning for her character, nor were creative or had any kind of stake.
Of course, there's to say that Uraraka (and Nejire and arguably Compress) are the exceptions in a series which otherwise handle very very well its character, giving each one the necessary space. Think of the class, half of it hasn't gotten a particularly meaningful moment, but everyone is well defined both appearance and personality wise.
I'm not one to pretend that anyone should have equal space, that would be impossible without making a tremeoundsly long arc (though I wouldn't mind that), Koda is my favorite character but I'm 90% sure he won't have any important moment save the one which simply showed off his quirk. With Uraraka I'm annoyed precisely because she "appears" to have relevance in most arc but then she doesn't, the story seems to be building up something for her, but it's so slow it's irritating for me, especially because every arcs appear to be her moment, and then nothing... Plus she's my second fav behind Koda
Edit: Forgot to mention that Momo is an example of female character handled well in the series. She got two main moments, and both were great

There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upI remember asking before but I forget the answer (I think someone brought up Fairy Tail)
In many shonen you end up with a trio of the most powerful fighters in the core cast, and they tend to vie for the position of having the most focus. Has a girl ever been part of a trio like that?
Edited by GNinja on Nov 13th 2019 at 4:01:52 PM
Kaze ni Nare!
Not sure. If they have, I can't think of any myself, though if you're bringing up Fairy Tail, than Erza might count.
More or less this. It's frustrating since it feels like the authors are always going out of their way to keep the girls out of the action. Some of it is their own issues, some of it is Executive Meddling that insists boys don't want to see ass kicking females, the last of which is weird to me, because then why the hell does Pre Cure even exist.
True, that's made for girls, but I bet plenty of guys watch and enjoy it, because those girls kick ungodly amounts of ass. You'd think people making Shonen would catch on.

One Strip! One Strip!Jujutsu Kaisen is pretty good at handling its female cast I think, even putting fighting aside. The main girl in the trio isn't fighting to be the strongest (she just wants to live in the city and the strongest person title is already taken by one person) but she never feels like an after thought to me.
Edit: I also like Kimetsu's handling of it's few females in the main cast, especially the butterfly sisters
Edited by Mami on Nov 13th 2019 at 5:20:53 PM
I absolutely cannot help but adore handsome 2D boysWell, I do know at least one person who was put off of Kimetsu from what they heard about Nezuko, so perhaps that’s not the best example.
I did try to read Kaisen, but it didn’t really grab me - maybe I’ll give it a second look.
Act-Age has a pretty good female cast, including the main protagonist, though that’s a fairly grounded story, with no real action scenes or anything. Still a pretty good one, though.

Oh God! Natural light!I think Fairy Tail kind of stopped using the trio dynamic after Wendy joined as the cast tend to split up more often.
But yea, women in Fairy Tail heavily sexualized, but they can kick ass too when it comes down to it and Lucy and Erza are constant presences throughout the series no matter what's going on.
Mashima isn't the best writer around, but he certainly knows how to balance his cast better than most.
