Midnight wasn’t the one who did that - that was the point of confusion.

Useful precision, because I was getting confused. evil grin

Speaking of which, I recently read volume 4 of Vigilante… That whole Knuckleduster/Mao arc was pretty great. It made use of the MHA universe's mechanics while feeling like its own thing. I mean, I highly doubt a dad beating his daughter half-to-death with stun-gun brass knuckles to save her is something we will ever see in the main series. As a monthly spin-off, Vigilante can take afford to be a little more borderline, and it does a good job at exploiting that. Plus it was just a great character moment.

Speaking of which, how canon is Vigilantes to the main series - like, has anything from it been contradicted by main series elements? Because while I haven’t been reading it (and don’t have anything against it), I’m not a huge fan of how Midnight’s Quirk was presented here.

[up][up]Interesting perspective. I should probably get around to reading it again.

@Karkat

It's a fully-canon prequel. It introduces the Trigger drug that's later used by Overhaul's goons to strengthen themselves. It also reveals the origins of Stain and what he was doing prior to becoming the Hero Killer.

Ah, right.

Well, still not a fan of how Midnight’s powers are presented.

Given it's stated to work 'mostly' on men, it makes me wonder if it only affects people attracted to women.

Yeah, that part. I think that’s kind of dumb, honestly.

I just figured it meant it's easier for her to put men to sleep, not that it's totally ineffective on women.

Given how easily she zonks out the stalker girl, I'd argue there's some degree of attraction involved.

Maybe it's the other way around, and it works based on Midnight's sexuality? She's attracted to men so it's more effective on them than women. Were she attracted to women it'd be the other way around.

[up][up] and [up]Could be another factor. Although from what I remember Vigilantes was open to being more lose with how Quirks work.

Or it could just be that Midnight's quirk only affects the Y-chromosome of a human being's genetic structure...

And since only men are XY...

That’s more exclusionary than the manga’s been with the definition, so that seems unlikely.

Could be either the Y-chromosome or just the testosterone levels.

Probably the latter...

Testosterone could work, since it does exist in both genders.

Yeah, I could easily see there being some sort of "it works more effectively on people with high testosterone levels" a thing. It's in line with the other pseudo-biological limitations other quirks have.

[up][up] and [up]I'd by it.

So with this last chapter, we know all the Quirks of Class B, and so all 40 of the first year hero course students.

I'd say in pure power Class A is stronger, but that's mostly due to the outliers of Izuku, Shoto, and Kacchan who are outliers because, well, they're the main characters.

But Class B still has some pretty conventionally strong ones, and they seem to have more technical powers, compared to the more straightforward nature of Class A's Quirks. Again, just in general terms.

I'd argue that B's recommended students are less impressive than A's, at least at first impression.

[up][up] I think because Hori thought first class A and then Class B, so the first powers he thought up were the simplest ones

I remember reading somewhere that Jiro's Quirk was one of the first he came up with.

Since Yanagi seems to be going for the kunoichi look, I think it'd be fitting if she had like throwing stars or kunai to move around.

Something else I was also musing about was Shinso saying "blessed people will destroy the world" and that seems like a sentiment Monoma agrees with.

While Monoma's Quirk might not inspire the same knee-jerk reaction that Shinso's does, it is true that he has no active power himself and basically at the whims of those around him to be able to do stuff.

I could see him having a complex about being born with a Quirk like that, his bravado aside, and that could be the sort of thing he and Shinso have in common.

I kind of like that Monoma and Shinso appear to be getting along- they both have that whole 'stereotypical villain power, and they deal with it by kind of leaning into the asshole persona people expect them to have' schtick going on.
