But the end drops all sorts of hints that most if not all things in the dream happened for real. I think Unknown is kinda like Silent Hill in that regard.

I'm getting Hans Christian Anderson Snow Queen vibes from this show and not the butchered Disney version. Really love how evil the beast is.

I hope that Cartoon Network makes more mini series with quality like this. Such pretty backgrounds~ They make me drool as much as Long Live the Royals(which I hope Cartoon Network picks that up as a full series in the future).

Going to watch the last four episodes with my parents tomorrow. We love it.

I watched this from beginning to end, and I can say without a doubt this is one of, if not, the best things to happen to CN in a while. I used to watch a lot of old-fashioned cartoons as a kid on VHS, so the homages to all of that and more tickled my fancy just right. grin

I feel like this is the best thing on CN *ever,* and previously, I thought Courage was the best thing in cartoons as a whole ever, so that's saying a lot.

The only downside to it at all is the line art. The thin Adventure Time look doesn't quite live up to how amazing everything else is. Still, everything else is so amazing the characters could've been non-animated cut-outs and I'd have been wowed.

What exactly is the point of Greg stealing that rock? It's just kinda brought up a couple of times through the series, then Greg reveals that he stole it in the final episode and we see a shot of him putting it back in the epilogue. My only guess is that it was part of how The Beast broke his spirit, but we never see The Beast mentioning the rock in any way. The last we saw of The Beast before he got Greg was him trying to break Greg's will by freezing him.

I think it's supposed to be a bookend to tie everything up nicely. It also exemplifies Greg's habit of being way too naive and unhelpful.

Greg has a tendency to do things on whims just because he wants to at the time - every problem that is specifically caused by Greg over the series is a consequence of that - and he doesn't really think about what he's doing or what's conncted to it. Likewise he's very naive so he doesn't really realize the weight of the things around him. Taking the rock is possibly the least important thing he did over the course of the series, but it's something he latched onto as something he did wrong that he can fix, and its a sign that he has finally started to think outside his own nose. Sure, the old lady wouldn't miss the rock at all, but the point is that he was thinking about her.

At least, that's how I took it.

Having him see stealing the rock as the most heinous thing he's done when it's really the least heinous all things considered is very typical of a little boy. It makes him more believable.

Speaking of bad stuff Greg did, what did he say was his reason for throwing the money away? I have a hard time to make out that line.

Spent my afternoon/evening watching this. Brilliant. I was tearing up towards the end, and it's been a while since something made me do that.

I rewatched the whole thing. ... nothing in the script, OR in the animation, was put in at random, despite it at first seeming so! :D Great writing!

I'm pretty sure the frogs riding down the river to bury themselves in mud are actual real-world frogs entering the unknown as their bodies go into hibernation for the winter, possibly also true of many other animals we see

The "I've got no cents" line also might seem like just a silly punchline but again, Greg was feeling guilty all that time for stealing that rock, thinking he's a "stealer." He didn't think he deserved those two pennies

Everything wrapped up so nicely. The ending was nice. So that's Beatrice at the beginning of the series with the dog.

Scythemantis is right, the human characters just don't look right compared to the backgrounds. Though I like the animal designs. They're reminiscent of 1920s postcards to me.

The beast's lit up form is creepy. So many screaming mouths. QAQ

Food for thought for WMG-ers The Beast's not the first time on Cartoon Network that we've had an antlered Big Bad closely associated with sharp, oily trees (with said oily substance having corruptive influences like the possessed dog), spreading fear across a land meshing elements from different time periods and keeping tabs on a cutter carrying a heavy burden. Yeah, I'm talking about Aku.

Marathoned this. Very good. I really enjoyed the balance between the character relationships, the creepy atmosphere, and the weird humor. Here's a question, though (my girlfriend and I had a disagreement here): what was the scariest moment in your opinion? For me it was when the girl in the cottage turned into a monster, for her it was the reveal behind the pumpkin people.

I adore this and now want to see the creators return with three more similar specials, each themed oon the other three seasons of the year.

Mine was the reveal of the Beast's soul being in that lantern instead of the Woodsman's daughter! The Beast has HAD IT. The audio STOPS. And everything goes black as the Beast flies into it! And Wirt has NEVER looked so scared like that before! My God...

I would say Auntie Whispers' introductory scene, although it's obviously less terrifying in hindsight.
