There are reviews that genuinely say it's an average movie and yet say "Recommended."
I wonder how many of the reviewers were the same people who wanted to defend it from the trolls the past few months?... Or, to be fair, thought the movie would suck?
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."I saw a lot of problems with the movie, but I still enjoyed it, and it's something I'd recommend even though it had elements that, for me, were average. It has characters that I loved though, and there were scenes that had me laughing really hard, and for me that makes it good enough to see again, even if I can't say the movie was great, maybe just average.
I think what I'm getting at here, is that you can think a movie is average overall, but immensely enjoy certain scenes, characters, or other elements of a movie.
"In 900 years of time and space I've never met anyone who wasn't important."![]()
Well, that was rude.
I don't see how anyone could not keep the ideological culture war that's been happening over the movie in mind while reading the reviews...
A good portion of the reviews read like they have an agenda to push.
By the by... Tropers who went to see this in the theaters, how full were the theaters when you were there? I keep seeing photos of empty theaters showing the film all over Twitter. Was it like that for you?

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."This thread just got unlocked, let's not get it locked again. No need to be mean, fam.
I went opening night and mine was pretty full— A few families with kids, some older couples, and lots of middle-aged women.

"In 900 years of time and space I've never met anyone who wasn't important."I don't remember where, but i think i found a good analogy for the movie, and its reaction.
The movie is like Fallout 4 . Very average as a stand-alone project, with some good and some bad, and people can't properly agree on what are the good parts and what are the bad parts; but it's a disgrace as part of an already-established series, for all the changes to what we already saw both in tone and mechanics, the "essense", some changes better that others, but in the end, its legacy only holds it back, it's pretty much impossible to not make comparisons when they literally share the same title.

My theater was pretty full and there was a goodly amount of laughter
Also, comedy is subjective so I'm not surprised that reviewers differed on what was to love or hate. Different tastes.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI'm gonna try to build on Aldo's point in a way that makes it sound less accusatory.
A week or two back, I saw Kevin Smith's review of the theatrical cut of Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice. His overall opinion was that it was an average-decent movie, but he still recommended his viewers see it for three reasons: 1) Parademons, 2) it's the "civil duty of a comic fan" to see it, and 3) even if you don't like it you should still support them so that DC and WB could make something you do.
I can totally see critics puffing up review scores for Ghostbusters. Maybe one does it because he/she hates all the backlash and wants to stick it to those who made such a big deal out of it. Maybe one does it because the backlash is so great that it's created its own backlash, making the movie look better in comparison. Maybe one likes the comediennes and the overall pro-women approach such that he/she doesn't want to encourage Hollywood to reject trying it again and thus put women back down. Maybe there's enough fear in being considered misogynistic that it angles his perspective more positively.
Or maybe one did just like it that much. One of my friends nearly pissed himself watching the first trailer. Patty was his favorite.
No conspiracies. No hidden deals. Just humans being humans.

I don't think there's a conspiracy so much as a bunch of people who got involved in this culture war and can't back out of it.
So they rate the film average, maybe even admit many of the jokes fall flat or the CGI isn't good, and yet say it's recommended so they can avoid what happened to Richard Roeper.

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."I think the best thing to do is wait 4-5 years and see how this film is looked on then.
Or, wait for the next reboot of a major film franchise (let's see, Indiana Jones, James Bond, Alien, Predator, Terminator) and see how people react. Maybe turn Ellen Ripley into a dude and James Bond into a chick...
...I'll leave.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!In the past I've tried to think of innuendo-y James Bond Girl Guy names.
I've only managed Plenty O'Toole.
Tragically Blue Beetle already took Big Dix.

You just read something and interpreted it your own way, which may or may not reflect the author's original intent. Stop with the conspiracy theories.
