It sort of forfeits the 'image board' thing. It's more just about anonymous music discussion. Oftentimes images are used to start the discussion up though. (last.fm collages .etc.)
I really don't find it that bad... Of course there are a lot of morons, but there are morons in every online community. You've just gotta ignore the idiotic posts, then you can find a lot of interesting discussion.

Yeah, it's good that practically everyone on there will at least know of the 'entry-level' bands in every genre, whether or not it's mainstream. That leads people to believe that anything they haven't heard of doesn't exist or is completely insignificant though, but as you said, that's 4chan for you.
i never would have heard of machine girl if not for /mu/. so its awesome for that.
