Shrek is indeed life, at least for Dreamworks.

How Dreamworks is doing these days is probably WHY Shrek 5 is a thing

Pretty much. About a year ago the company came out in the open about their financial woes since they're dependent on investors. Guardians of the North, Turbo, and Mr. Peabody and Sherman all disappointed, so I'm not surprised they're hitting the panic button.

Then they should at least focus on making the next Kung Fu Panda movies good or something. Don't go back to fucking Shrek.

Looking for some stories?

This is all the way back in February. Things change.

.... I think Dreamworks called it 'RISE of the Guardians'.

I never cared much for the first Shrek even when it was new and fresh (for the record, I was about nine years old at the time). The only Shrek movie that I consider genuinely good on its own merits is the second one - and I mean that both in terms of story and comedy.

I think it's worth questioning if a movie can truly be considered "classic" if its appeal lies almost entirely in subverting contemporary trends, any more than than it would be classic by bowing to all contemporary trends. Isn't that a way just as sure to become irrelevant immediately, once the trends it's subverting are no longer a thing?

[up][up][up][up] To be fair, the Fractured Fairy Tale isn't a new thing. I think it could survive on its own merits as simply a parody of fairy tales.

After all, Airplane is still a very funny film long after the disaster movie craze died off.

There hasn't really been a disaster movie craze like there was in the 70s. Airplane was a direct parody of those types of films, yet it is still funny even if you don't know that.

[up] Not a huge fan of Airplane!, personally, but yeah, I guess you may have a point. Still... even without the context of it being a parody, Airplane! is still one of the epitomes of eminently quotable gag-a-minute wackiness turned Up To Eleven. The first Shrek, if you remove it from the context of the typical animated features at the time, is actually kind of surprisingly... subdued, especially for a franchise that's become so famous/infamous for pioneering this style of don't-give-a-hoot comedy at all costs.

[up] My sister was actually watching the first Shrek the other day (on VHS, no less!). I think it holds up surprisingly well. It helps that I can understand most of the jokes now.

A Shrek 5?

Why would Dreamworks want to do that? I personally think that the Shrek Franchise had pretty much ended with Shrek Forever After since all the story lines were wrapped up in that movie. So, I don't see the need for a fifth Shrek movie, unless they have a completely new story line for the characters.

I wouldn't think making a 5th Shrek could be good financially.Considering how 3 and 4 did at the box office.

I agree. I think at this point, they are running out of storylines to tell for Shrek.

They sort of went over it in The Musical version. His parents told him that ogres are to be feared by many and that he has to live alone in a swamp. This all happened on his birthday when he was still a child.

His parents told him that (IIRC) because it is an ogres tradition or something along the lines of that. His backsstory is explained in the 1st song so maybe that could jog my memory of what happened.

@ Scott Pilgrim I've actually had the DVD longer than the VHS. I only got the VHS about a month ago when I started to get into collecting VHS tapes.

Throughout last month, I've gotten:

Back to the Future Trilogy (1994 for Part 1, 1990 for sequels)

Batman Returns (with Mask of the Phantasm on its way)

A Boy Named Charlie Brown (2001 release of 1969 movie)

A Bug's Life (original 1999 release with Heimlich on cover)

Chicken Run (2005? VHS release)

Monsters Inc (2002 VHS release)

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Widescreen Collector's Edition (2000)

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002 VHS)

Star Wars Trilogy THX Remastered Edition (1995 release)

Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition Limited Edition Collector's Set (1997)

Stuart Little (2001? VHS release)

Titanic (1998 release)

Toy Story (2000 Gold Classics Collection rerelease

Toy Story 2 (2000 release)

And that's added onto:

Alien (1984 VHS)

Aliens (1987 VHS)

Batman (1989 VHS)

Beauty and the Beast (1992 Black Diamond Classics release)

Hercules (1998 Masterpiece Collection release)

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1997 Masterpiece Collection release)

Better yet, why not a story centered around the babies? Shrek and Fiona's kids train and ride on the baby Dronkies and even have Our-club-is-better-than-yours challenges with those kitten bandits in Puss' short movie...

Yeah, fuck it.

Toy Story 3 was great, and they were more-or-less happy and at home at the end of the second film.

Don't remember how Shrek 4 ended though.
