"Johny! No!"

The poor guy's head had popped like a melon under the pressure of the enormous radscorpion's pincers. Isaac screamed as he fired his assault rifle at the monster, sweeping it back and forth in a desperate attempt to hit something vital. His screams and curses were cut short as the giant scorpion impaled him on its stinger, lifted him into the air, and tossed him aside. The rest of the caravaners were already dead, their mangled corpses strewn across the ground along with those of several smaller scorpions.

To make it this far only to be undone by a damn scorpion nest.... Gary cursed under his breath. He had tried to fight but it was useless; bullets bounced harmlessly off the monster scorpion's carapace and his laser rifle had proven no more effective. One claw swipe had sent him flying into a nearby car. He knew he was lucky, to be crawling away from this massacre without the scorpion noticing him, but he sure didn't feel very lucky.

Standing up proved to be impossible. Gary held his right leg and wheezed in pain, waiting for it to become bearable before continuing to crawl. The leg was probably broken. Fucking great. His best chance was to find some kind of shelter, even if only for a while. The caravan had medical supplies on one of its pack brahmin, but scavenging that was out of the question for now.

Gary made his way into the nearest building, a two-story affair that looked like it might have been some kind of housing unit before the war. Inside, he found that a large section of the floor had been ripped out to reveal the opening of a large cave underneath. Gary flicked on his pip-boy's flashlight and shone it into the mouth of the cave; smooth concrete walls supporting a level ceiling. Human made. After crawling far enough to feel safe inside the gently sloping tunnel, Gary collapsed and lay still for a minute. He had his rifle and a few grenades, which would be good for putting himself out of his misery and not much else. A canteen full of water, but no food, no medicine.... and he was in no shape to go out and find them. Gary turned on his pip-boy's radio.

"If anyone can here me, I'm broadcasting from the outskirts of Toronto. I've been attacked by a radscorpion and I desperately need help. If you find my caravan, I'm in the two-story building down the street from the big yellow sign. Please, if you can hear this...."

Gary lowered his pip-boy and looked at the map. The coordinates indicating his location didn't mean anything to him, but maybe someone out there knew how to read them. He read out the numbers and letters over the radio. As he raised his pip-boy to send the message again, Gary thought about his dead caravan. Those guys had been his friends, in time, they might have even been his family.... but they were all gone in a few short minutes. Now he was on his own again.

That was the reality of the wasteland. Whether it was nation-states with nuclear arsenals, or just giant scorpions and wanderers, war.... War never changes.

"Hey buddy, you hear that?" Slick said excitedly to Xarok, wherever they were. His face displayed a radio as he received the message, but then shifted back to his usual appearance. "Some unlucky palooka got his clock cleaned by some wildlife. And now that caravan's sitting there all by its lonesome. All those goods. Just... sitting there. Poor bastard's probably dead by now, it would be a damn shame for all his goods to go unclaimed and get eaten by a radscorpion. What do you say, pal?"

Elsewhere...

It was a quiet and lonely day, just as usual. Day Two of being outside the Vault, and it really wasn't as bad as the Overseer made it out to be. Contrary to what Aizakku had been told, there actually was something outside of the confined, isolated, lonesome hellhole where he was born and raised. It wasn't much better, but at least he hadn't been irradiated yet, or happened across any blood.

Even better, the formerly useless radio function of his Pip-Boy picked up the stations out here; Aizakku was listening to lounge music from the 1950's. He eventually got bored of it, and decided to look for something else. He saw some unfamiliar channel, and decided to listen in, hoping for some new and interesting genre of music. Instead, he got:

"If anyone can hear me, I'm broadcasting from the outskirts of Toronto. I've been attacked by a radscorpion and I desperately need help. If you find my caravan, I'm in the two-story building down the street from the big yellow sign. Please, if you can hear this...."

Well, whoopdy-do, thought Aizakku. He could actually see the yellow sign from where he was camped out. He put out his fire, grabbed his backpack, set a waypoint for his campsite on the Pip-Boy, and set off to help this stranger. Maybe he could finally make a friend.

"Yeah, probably not a bad idea," Xarok considered. He looked from the blue screen of his Pip-boy toward the location the coordinates indicated, his gas mask and even tone revealing nothing. In truth, he was more excited about the radscorpion than the prospects of looting a caravan.

"Keep trigger discipline, Slick. I want to get a good look at this thing before you try to blow it up." He quickly amended the order, remembering the last time they fought together, "Actually, better you keep your explosive ordnance to yourself for this one, at least if you want that caravan in one piece."

He pulled his six-barreled weapon off the heavy-duty clips attaching it to the metal ammo case on his back, letting the sling take most of the weight as his left hand found the carrying handle. With his right, he fed a belt of thin 5mm rounds from the case into the minigun, then motioned for the towering Securitron to follow as he began to move down the street.

"I wonder what's on the radio out here," he added, shifting through the local stations to see what he could find.

As Gary lay in the darkness of the tunnel, he noticed a light approaching slowly from deeper within. A few minutes later he found himself bathed in the light; it was attached to a small, floating robot, shaped like a sphere. He had seen one of these in a scrapyard before, the owner had called it an "eyebot." The machine had a pair of words stamped near the bottom of its chassis along with a number. Gary squinted to read them.

"Vault.... Tec? Ninety-three?"

"'Intruder identified. Scanning.... complete. Unknown entity. Identify yourself.'" the robot suddenly spoke.

"Uhh.... my name is Gary," he replied.

"'Entity 'Gary' unknown. Access denied. Farewell!'"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!"

Gary raised his laser rifle and prepared to defend himself, but to his surprise, the "farewell" was just a genuine good-bye. The eyebot turned and retreated back down the tunnel, soon disappearing into the darkness once more.

"Hey, hey!! Help?! Or something?!" Gary called after it.

No response.

"What the hell...."

Gary started crawling back to the entrance of the tunnel. If anyone did respond to his message, he would need to be in view when they arrived.

In a few minute's time, Aizakku had almost reached the city limits. He could see the yellow sign rather clearly, but no two-story buildings were in sight. While walking, Aizakku began to consider things. He might be bloody... he thought.

One of the crummy things about leaving the Capital Wasteland was the distinct lack of Galaxy News Radio. Calico had been flicking through stations for the past half hour, not really content with any of the stations she was getting. She'd almost decided to switch off the radio when a new station showed up on the list.

...broadcasting from the outskirts...
She'd accidentally switched to something else out of habit, but the tone of that voice made it seem urgent. Curiosity getting the better of her, she decided to listen in.

...desperately need help. If you find my caravan, I'm in the two-story building down the street from the big yellow sign. Please, if you can hear this....
"A caravan, huh?" Calico didn't know what kind of help this guy was looking for, and normally she wouldn't particularly care. But she was running a bit low on supplies, and she hoped her service would be worth some food and ammo, maybe a spare stimpack if she was lucky.

Of course, this could very well be a trap. She'd fallen for it once before, arriving at the location only to be ambushed by a small pack of raiders. Fortunately for her they had crap aim. She wasn't too keen on repeating the experience. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice..."

The coordinates weren't too far north of where she was. At the rate she was going, she'd get there maybe 10 minutes or so.

The Radscorpion wasn't hard to spot. In the midst of the road, the giant black arthropod was busily cutting up the remains of a brahmin with its pincers and shoving them into its face, which to Xarok's constant amazement, appeared as simply a smaller pair of pincers that further incised and guided the meat into a gaping maw. The monster seemed to twitch slightly at each of Xarok's footfalls, despite his distance, but its focus remained on the meal. Human bodies littered the area, many clearly armed.

"Magnificent," he commented under his breath. This was a natural engine of destruction before him; claws like industrial metal shears, armor that could deflect bullets, and a venomous, stinging tail. Given their speed and intelligence, Deathclaws were the most deadly creatures Xarok had come across in the wasteland, but these living arsenals were like lethal poetry to him. For this reason, he didn't enjoy destroying them.

He didn't mention this to Slick, instead appealing to the robot's logic, "The last time I killed one of these, its chitin took the better portion of my ammo pack, and I don't relish the idea of getting in close to utilize the Eviscerator. Any ideas to draw it away?"

"Hmm..." Slick said. "Ammo does cost money, so I see your point if it takes all that much just to kill it. And we can't just drag a car near it and shoot that, it'd destroy the caravan too. That's no good."

He looked a little bit away from the radscorpion, towards a two-story building down the street from the big yellow sign. He pointed at it. "That's the place mentioned in the radio message. I'll get it to follow me into there, and once it gets distracted with whoever's in there we'll be able to rummage through the wreckage. Sound good, buddy?"

Xarok smiled behind the mask; the robot always had a way of simplifying things. "I don't know - he could be knowledgable about the area."

He looked at Slick, particularly at his wheel, "I know you're faster than me. Think you can snatch what's left of that brahmin without getting caught by one of those claws?"

"Maaaaybe," Slick said. "But that means we can't get any of the good stuff. That's the best stuff! We have to get that stuff. Why don't I just make it follow me away? We're so far away right now, if I shot it once it'd follow me, but it'll get lost soon enough. Why don't you go hide?"

He lifted up his arm, the laser gun on it starting to charged up - a sign of the proverbial 'safety' being turned off.

Aizakku had ascended to a rooftop, and could see the Radscorpion about 50 yards away. From there, he could sort of see the Brahmin as it was being devoured by the massive predator. From this distance, he could see the Brahmin's bodily fluids, though not clearly. He felt a bit queasy just seeing it from there, and decided to look away. He'd have to avoid this creature, since his laser pistol would be all but useless against it.

As Calico rounded the corner of a ruined building, she spotted two figures in the distance. What first caught her eye was the robot, one unlike anything she's seen before. "That's no Protectron", she whispered to herself. And this walking tin can seemed to be charging up one of its weapons, which meant that a fight was about to happen. With whom, she couldn't quite tell.

Until she knew more, she thought it better to stay hidden. She certainly didn't want to get caught in the crossfire, or she might have to use her last stim.

"Woah, woah," Xarok pushed Slick's glowing arm downward. "I'm not saying we can't take everything else, we just need a reason for the radscorpion to keep from coming right back after we lure it away. It doesn't really matter what you run off with, as long as it's enough meat to keep him busy."

"If you say so," Slick said, putting down his arm. "But that brahmin sure is big."

He looked over at the scene again. "Okay, I got this covered."

He wheeled his way over to one of the dead bodies, and picked it up, resting it on his shoulder. "Hey over here!" he shouted at the creature. He fired a single shot from his laser gun at it and started to run away.

Alright, I just need some way to distract it- is that a robot? What's it doing there? It suddenly dawns on Aizakku that he's not the only one trying to help out this stranger. Damn, it looks like the robot beat him to the punch, too. It's just my luck that this opportunity is claimed by someone else...

Today hadn't been a good day for Eve. She had just been chased off from the ruins of a Canadian Tire- an intact Canadian Tire, no less, with a tasty cache of unclaimed shotguns and ammunition- by a band of PLC thugs, her scavenged Pip-Boy was still on the fritz, and to top it all off her half-scavenged water purifier had remained half-completed for the better part of two days. Just as she was starting to lose hope for anything good happening today, she picked up a signal, a faint one, but still a signal, calling for help.

Well, people who needed help also sometimes gave out rewards- maybe even some interesting pre-war stuff or water purifier components. And helping was supposed to be its own reward too, wasn't it?

As soon as she saw the giant bluish-black arthropod, Eve instinctively fired her laser rifle at the thing; hopefully she could melt through at least some of its armour and distract it from the remains of the caravan.

The giant radscorpion paused and looked up from its meal as laser fire hit it from two sides. It was momentarily torn, but decided to go after the bigger and more visible target, the Securitron. It raised its pincers before charging at the robot, scuttling forward with frightening speed. It couldn't catch up to Slick, but it was fast enough to keep pace behind him.

Ah, how convenient! thought Aizakku, seeing the large robot diverting the radscorpion's attention from him. Now, he could safely move forward. He quickly hopped from rooftop to rooftop, making his way over to what he believed was the two-story building described in the distress signal.

Xarok turned toward the source of the second beam with his weapon's barrels spinning. The woman he faced was young, and too clean to be an attacking raider. He let go of the secondary trigger, letting the minigun come to a stop, and ripped off his mask, shouting, "Hold your fire! You don't want its attention!"

Aizakku jumps across a gap and through a broken window. He looks about himself, and sees the dead bodies of several caravan guards. He immediately panics, the room's floor being mostly covered in blood. He'll have to walk through it to get to the other doors. He reaches out and picks a shotgun off of the floor.

The radscorpion stopped in its tracks as the limp body hit it on the back—not because it had been hurt in any way by the flying corpse, but because it was curious about the sack of meat that had just landed on it. The beast turned as the dead body rolled off of it, considering whether to continue chasing its aggressor or chow down. After a few seconds it settled on the latter, gorging itself on the dead caravaner while ignoring Slick.

After about a minute of watching, Calico decided that these people weren't part of some ambush operation. She saw the giant robot leading the Radscorpion away from the area. Better it than me, she thought.

After checking that her gun was stashed somewhere she could draw it in an instant if she needed it, she stepped out of her hiding place and asked, "Is it gone?"
