"I've asked myself that plenty of times," Mirana replied to the dwarf, taking a long pull from the bottle. It was certainly stronger than any of the watered-down drinks she had had for the last few days. "And I suppose that the answer is that I'm looking for something too. What it is, I don't know exactly. Tell me, what do you know of Parlat?"

"A band of misfits, indeed." Vythlian took a swig and gulped down the last of his wine. "I suppose you got a good enough glimpse when we walked through the door; or were you too busy hiding behind that cloak?" The sarcastic remark was finished with a snide chuckle. "Where, then, would we be able to find the nobility of this city?"

Theridan frowned, self-consciously pulling his embroidered hood off with a jingle of chain armor. This revealed locks of wavy black hair, and a pair of short gray horns just in front and above of his pointed ears.

Taking another bite, he replied, "I think there's a few noble estates in the northern side. Though the really rich ones live within the inner walls, near the fortress."

"You're not getting past there without good reason," he added.

In lieu of perusing a possible lead, Alaeddin adopts the most tried, true, and noble of all Wizards' strategy- letting the meat shields do the legwork. Thusly excused, he consigned himself to the status of Plan B and simply kept his head down and his ears up.

"Not much," Weyland replied to the half-elf. "The god of a small cult, as far as I know, dealing with rats and insects and such. Advocates overthrow of all those with power. Madness, that...although there are some who could use some of it." The dwarf snorted in disgust. "Like those bastards who abandoned my friend."

"Small cult. That's what everyone thinks," Mirana replied. "Yet a few decades ago, just about every single member of his cult stormed into the forests, and we lost a lot of lives because of it before we managed to gather up our strength and cut them down." She looked at the bottle of Dragon's Piss introspectively, before taking another drink from it. "So now here we are again, some strange groups going about in the world, and we don't know anything about them. We don't have the slightest idea of what to expect, and we'll eventually die because of it. Unless more people like me do something about it. So that's why I'm out here."

"When in the name of the bloody emepror are they going to get over the slaves?" Devlin muttered rhetorically, not that anybody would be able to hear it, including any dark elves. The main thing he was eavesdropping on however, were his fellow male elves, the one who talked about owning a district especially. That seemed to be the one most likely to yield results.

Devlin continued listening in on the two over his meal. From his position, Alaeddin could also hear some of the dialog, though his grasp of the dark elven tongue was poor.

"Someone else will make a move before that, I'll wager," The conspiratorial dark elf reconsidered. He was freckled, black spots dotted his face, and his dark hair had a few streaks of white. He was talking with another, much taller elf with a head shaved bald and red lines tattooed down his face like streams of bloody tears. They both wore dark padded armor.

"Bastron will not go down easily, but who knows what sort will replace him? Better the devil you know, and all that." the bald elf posited. "My advice, hire a few good men, such as that lictor-looking mercenary who just came in," he casually pointed toward Vythlian, whose back was currently facing the two, "And barge in on the low scum while he's with one of his whores."

The other elf put his hand on his chin in thought, "Had I the gold for a sellsword like that, certainly. Of course, Bastron's probably loaded.... Wonder if he'll work on credit?"

Vythlian visually pondered for a moment. Finally, he said, "minor nobility was the term used to describe them, if memory serves me."

"I...see," said Weyland, as images from the battlefield in which Alruna disappeared flashed through his mind. "That is...not an easy thing to experience, having one's home attacked. I hope you didn't lose anyone...close, when it happened."

His meal finished, Devlin smile to himsef as he rose and made his way to the two dark elves with exotic facial features.

"You want a mercenary? Well, if you have what I want, you've got five, maybe six. Including the dark elf with the armor. As for what I want, it's information, on , and a share of the profits from whoever you want us to attack. As for who I want information about, what do you know of the Rivennus family?"

The hooded man replied to Vythlian apathetically, "Yeah. Probably the north side, then, if they live within the city."

On the other side of the room, the two dark elves looked up at Devlin, thrown off-guard.

"Don't you know it's impolite to eavesdrop, boy?" the gray-streaked elf returned with a scowl.

The bald one added, "'Dark elf?' This one's been living among humans too long." He stood from his chair, reaching for a large, wickedly-curved sword leaning on the table in its scabbard.

"I'll deal with him, Othruil."

His friend stopped him with a subtle gesture, "Not just yet. Who are you, boy, and how do you claim to have such warriors?"

Back at the table, Theridan looked over Vythlian's spiked pauldron, "Watch your back. Those elves over there are giving you funny looks."

"Just a quarter of the village," Mirana replied to Weyland, taking another pull from the bottle. "But the past is the past. Can't dwell on it, only learn from it. Which means we should probably get back to focusing on the task at hand." She set the bottle back down and looked over at the barkeep again.

"You must learn a lot about the city in your line of work," she said to Aulinn. "What's the word in town? Anything out of the ordinary happening? ... Aside from the cutter with the spikes walking into your inn and getting a drink."

"Well, the Tournament is coming up, for one. Not exactly a secret, though you're not from around here I suppose. I suspect that's what's brought so many of his type," she said with a sideways glance at Theridan.

"And there's the rumors about dragons, of course," Aulinn said with a sigh. "I don't think anyone really believes them, but they spread faster than the real news does around here. Except for that which is coming from Grayhearth."

She looked up before elaborating, noticing the trouble that seemed to be brewing between Devlin and the bald elf. "Don't you reach for that sword, Baalonath. Keep that sort of business outside," she warned sternly.

Vythlian turned his head over his shoulder to see Devlin talking with the other dark elves. Vythlian faced Theridan again and sighed.

"Damn Korilians," he grunted. "Well, Theridan, it has been a...pleasure," he said with a nod.

He grabbed his things and walked back over to the counter, directly behind Weyland and Mirana. "Let's go."

"Ah, of course, the tournament," Mirana said to the barkeep. She turned around and faced Vythlian.

"I'll leave when I'm ready, not at your whim," she said to the male dark elf, before turning back to the female dark elf.

"What can you tell me about the tournament?" she asked. "Or the dragons."

Vythlian scowled behind Mirana and leaned closer to her. "We've been here long enough; those two brothers we're supposed to be looking for are in the northern part of the city." A quick gesture was aimed at Devlin and the other two dark elves. "And our friend seems to be stirring up trouble that we sorely do not need," he said slowly, seething.

"Feh, the Rivennuses are rich, everyone here will know where to find them," Mirana whispered to Vythlian. Then she spoke up, "You'll need something useful if we're to leave."

She glanced over at Devlin. "And it'll have to be something especially useful if it means I'll have to miss watching that simpleton get beaten to a pulp."

Vythlian groaned initially, but then couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of Devlin getting some sense knocked into him.

"In a city full of royalty? I'd be surprised if anyone—especially in this part of the city—who didn't know them directly has even heard of the name Rivennus."

"Well, as much as I dislike the 'simpleton'," Weyland began, "perhaps we should aid him, at least at this juncture? We might have need of his..." the dwarf paused, looking for a euphamism rather than be overheard in the crowded bar. "his stealthy skills, or indeed his stealthy knowledge or stealthy contacts. For the three of us look rather distinctive, enough so to probably be identifiable with a casual glance, as does the wizard. As for our human companion...well, I trust him not to knife me in the back, but I'd rather not trust him in a situation where his devotion might cost me more than a handful of silvers, say."

Theridan watched his new acquaintance depart, then pulled his hood back over his horns and returned to his meal. The barkeep was about to answer Mirana before Vythlian took the ranger's attention. At his presence, she retreated further down the bar, busying herself with cleaning a dirty goblet.

The bald elf Aulinn had referred to as "Baalonath" had turned at her warning, however. He narrowed his eyes as his gaze found the blackguard.

"That's not just any mercenary, sir," he said, unmoving. "That's Vythlian Emberglare. Must be."

Othruil turned in his chair from Devlin slowly, confirming it for himself. He smiled, "Well, well. He yet lives."

"Bother!" Mirana said, giving Vythlian a deathly gaze. "As long as you're going to wear that your're going to scare off our sources of information. Go wait outside or something. Drink yours silly in the alleyway. Go look for the brothers with what little you have. Just do it somewhere that isn't here, and do it now. "

She stood up, taking her bottle with her and sat down again near Aulinn. "Don't worry about him, he simply has poor taste in tailors," she said, leaning over the counter. "Anyway, what have you heard about these dragons and the tournament? Don't seem like the sort of things that happen every day."

"No," the barkeep answered. "Well, there's always some madman raving about dragons in the streets, or some hunter boasting of seeing one, but for some reason there's more talk of them than usual. Of course, nobody can agree on the details."

One of the orcs nearly fell off his chair as he turned to the bar. Between his slurring and thick accent, he interjected, "Wyverns, I'd bet my tusks. Stupid humans can't tell the difference."

Aulinn dismissed him, "And what would those be doing all the way here in Pyria? At least we know there's some precedent of dragons in the region, though it was a long time ago."

The orc frowned, his glance lingering on Mirana, but he seemed to lose interest as he turned back in his chair. The barkeep continued, "I don't know. If there is a dragon, though, the emperor is bound to try to ally with it. Gods know he's been bedfellows with worse."

She sighed, putting the goblet down. "As far as the Tournament, that's an annual thing, at least where Styos is concerned. It's the biggest one in Stygia; they hold it a mile or so out of the city, and in the fortnight prior things get very crowded here, as you might have noticed. It's about a week out, now, and they've stepped up the guard to compensate. I don't know where they find them all, but as usual, they're pretty wary of this district."

"Anyway, Stygian officers are always on the lookout for warriors who perform especially well over the two days, so it's sort of a recruitment initiative as well as entertainment. Brings all sorts," she said, with another glance at the hooded man.

"So, this tournament is a series of duels, I'd imagine," Weyland asked the bartender, all the while never talking his eyes off of Devlin, wonder how to get the dark elf out of his predicament, and how to get close to their target's brothers.

"Duels are a part of it, yes. But there's also jousting, target archery, wrestling, and it all culminates in the mêlée - that's the main event," Aulinn replied.

"It's quite the affair."
