I do find it weird that for all the fearmongering from anti-vaxxers in America and Europe. They never reference the strict Covid restriction in China and how it is used by its officials to justify overstepping their boundaries and do a lot of vile shit. You know the stuff that those anti-vaxxers keep claiming will happen with all the "We're the new Jews and the "evil governments" are the new Nazi" crap.

I imagine all those extra authority from all those Covid restriction laws in China is going to end up like how Patriot Acts end up in America.

I'm not as witty as I think I am. It's a scientifically-proven fact.

Mixed bag of Hong Kong journalist students who are frustrated that the likes of Apple Daily and the Stand are closed.

While more people are signing up for journalist courses throughout HK, others have decided to sign up for working with international media outlets like AFP, AP and Reuters since there are little to no places where they can apply to (media outlets) that are independent and are not pro-Beijing mouthpieces.

NYT: Carrie Lam will not seek new term as Chief Executive after COVID disaster.

    Article
HONG KONG — Carrie Lam, the chief executive of Hong Kong, announced on Monday that she would not seek a second term after a huge surge in coronavirus infections left the global financial hub with one of the highest virus death rates in the world.

Mrs. Lam announced her plans at a news conference, citing family reasons.

“It is my personal wish and aspiration and it is entirely based on my family consideration,” Mrs. Lam said, adding that she had already informed Beijing of her decision.

Mrs. Lam has been criticized by Hong Kong residents and pro-Beijing lawmakers for mixed messaging and mishandling the city’s fifth outbreak, its biggest and most devastating since the beginning of the pandemic. Officials wavered on citywide mass testing, at one point indicating that the city might have to lock down residents, a move that triggered anxiety and panic buying.

As cases surged in February, Beijing stepped in, sending health workers, epidemiologists and technicians for testing. Hong Kong’s inability to get cases under control prompted warnings from China’s most senior leaders, including Xi Jinping. It also caused an exodus of the city’s expatriate community.

A strong-willed chief executive, Mrs. Lam became the target of huge street protests in 2019. Demonstrators demanded her resignation over an extradition bill that was met with strong opposition and monthslong protests.

Mrs. Lam on Monday referred to these protests, as well as the coronavirus and “nonstop interference of foreign forces” during her time as leader of Hong Kong.

“I have faced unprecedented and enormous pressure,” she said.

Given current events in Europe, I'm waiting for Xi to declare any day now that the process of abolishing SAR status and fully integrating Hong Kong into Guangdong Province has begun.

[up][up] And nothing of value was lost. She is pretty much less Chief Executive and more Mouth of Sauron Xi anyway.

[up] Yeah, that one is just a matter of when, not if at this point. I know there are some who claim that it won't happen because Hong Kong's current special status is more beneficial to CCP because it attracts and gives foreign investors a sense of "security", but I don't think Xi Jinping's megalomania will allow it.

To the Westerners confused about why Xi hasn't actually annexed Hong Kong straight away; I always saw the HK government post-NSL as a collaborationist puppet regime, who wanted to keep the pro-business, pro-Beijing and very elitist status quo because it worked and suited their own ends.

Side note, but explaining to right-wingers that the pro-communist side in the HK protests is conservative and pro-business is always funny.

People are speculating that John Lee is going to take charge - he's basically the Head of Security for the regime at this point, and is a former cop.

SCMP: YouTube terminates campaign channel of sole Hong Kong chief executive candidate John Lee, citing need to comply with US sanctions on ex-official.

    Article
Online video-sharing platform YouTube has terminated the campaign channel of Hong Kong’s sole chief executive candidate John Lee Ka-chiu, citing the need to comply with US sanctions placed on the former official.

The platform, operated by US giant Google, made the rare move in taking down Lee’s YouTube channel early on Wednesday, clipping the Beijing-endorsed candidate’s ability to share videos of him meeting different sectors publicly.

In response to a Post inquiry, a Google spokesman said: “Google complies with applicable US sanctions laws and enforces related policies under its terms of service.”

“After review and consistent with these policies, we terminated the Johnlee2022 YouTube channel,” he added, without specifying the reasons.

All content on Lee’s YouTube page has been removed, with a message saying: “This account has been terminated for violating Google’s Terms of Service.”

Lee’s campaign office director, Tam Yiu-chung, said they had received a notification from Google on Wednesday morning. He called the termination “totally unreasonable” and “regretful”.

“They will not be able to stop us from disseminating our election messages to the public. We will continue to use different channels and work hard for the campaign,” he said in the afternoon.

“The decision was so abrupt, and Google’s explanation is too simple. It is totally unreasonable.”

Since Lee announced his bid for the top post on April 9, he had been communicating with an Election Committee filled predominantly with pro-Beijing members from different sectors online, while broadcasting their meetings via YouTube and Facebook channels.

As of Wednesday, Lee’s campaign pages on Facebook and Instagram were operating smoothly. He was still broadcasting his meeting with the sports, performing arts, culture and publication subsector of the Election Committee, the body that picks the chief executive, in the afternoon.

Lee has been under US sanctions since 2020, along with at least a dozen former and current officials involved in the implementation of the Beijing-imposed national security law, which bans acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.

At the time, Lee was Hong Kong’s security minister, before the former policeman won promotion to chief secretary, the city’s No 2 official.

As security chief he accused the US of double standards and hypocrisy, saying: “Maintaining national security is a matter of justice and duty. The United States wants to … intimidate, and it will not succeed.”

One day, we will read his name in the news and cheer.

[up] Considering they have pretty much consumed by the CCP, their complaints about censorship and interference are just hilarious. Not to mention, Youtube is a private entity and it's within their rights to do so. Whether they should is... a completely diferrent matter, though. And I don't have a good enough answer for it even in the case of pissing off and fucking around with CCP. For now, I'm glad that douchebag, John Lee, is being shoved away somewhere else.

This is related to the aftermath of the protests.

The Hong Kong Police Force is long considering to replace their Model 10 revolvers. Seems that they're accelerating it 'cause of parts running out and the export restrictions after the National Security Law was passed.

They're looking at the Norinco QSZ-92, only 'cause of how much rounds it can carry.

From SCMP:

Hong Kong police could be set to retire their standard-issue revolvers in favour of pistols imported from mainland China, the Post has learned.

A source said the force had recently received dozens of QSZ-92 pistols for officers to test. The 9mm firearm is commonly used by officers serving in China’s Public Security Bureau.

“Training in the use of the new weapon is also being offered to some officers in order to get their feedback,” he said.

The insider said efforts to source firearms to replace the standard-issue Smith & Wesson 38 revolvers had been under way for several years. The decision was made after the force’s American supplier stopped making the pistols, with the necessary gun parts to maintain them set to run out of stock.

The Post has learned that the force has more than 10,000 revolvers. The firearms are used by uniformed officers, including members of the Police Tactical Unit, Emergency Unit, Traffic sections, as well as patrol subunits in various districts.

Standard revolvers can hold six rounds of ammunition, while the magazine of a QSZ-92 pistol has a capacity of 15 bullets.

The force’s revolvers weigh about 900 grams with a muzzle velocity of 1,000 feet per second. In comparison, the 9mm pistol used by mainland officers weighs about 760 grams and has a muzzle velocity of 1,150 feet per second.

Detectives previously used 38. Colt Detective Special revolvers, but the handguns were replaced several years ago with pistols manufactured by Sig Sauer.

Another source said one of the reasons the force had opted for a mainland supplier was due to an export ban on select weapons to Hong Kong by the United States and several European countries in response to the Beijing-imposed national security law, which came into force on June 30, 2020.

“The force must look to a secure source for its weapons in the future. Firearm development in China is of a high standard,” he said. “If a mainland manufacturer can fulfil the [police’s] user specifications, why shouldn’t we use them?”

A third insider said there was currently no urgent need to buy new firearms as the force’s revolvers were still serviceable for the time being.

He added that police were still sourcing potential replacements around the world, including over the border.

“Pistols from mainland suppliers are one of the best options because the products are of high quality at low prices,” the source said.

A police spokesman said the force occasionally reviewed officers’ equipment from time to time and bought additional supplies in accordance with operational needs.

Operational details involving the sourcing of equipment for law enforcement could not be made known to the public, he said. With the export ban on select weapons to Hong Kong, the force has increasingly turned to the mainland to meet supply needs, including the purchase of retractable batons and anti-riot gear.

Police also bought three water cannon trucks for HK$9.9 million (US$1.26 million) last year from suppliers across the border, bringing the force’s total number of such vehicles up to six.

Following the stabbing of an officer outside the Sogo department store in Causeway Bay last July 1, police also sourced stab-proof vests from the mainland.

The HKPF is replacing the Unimog (armored) U500 trucks with the Sabertooth from Huakai Vehicles in 2022. The tender was completed to replace them since they've been deployed a lot and the force can't buy non-Chinese APCs that can do the same task.

With this, the force has to now rely on Chinese (and could be, with Russia) for their LE gear needs.

Turned out that six persons were arrested as they violated COVID-19 guidelines.

Which is ironic as the HKSAR government has decided to normalize living with COVID.
