The whole exaggeration for the Egomaniac Hunter thing for the Predators bothers me quite a bit, as while yes the original Jungle Hunter can definitely be viewed as such and is comparable to Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger's ilk for being like a slasher villain, there's definitely a difference between preying on nonsentient animals that have no chance of fighting fair and dumb teenagers versus hunting commandos toting miniguns and chucking grenades. The situations aren't identical. I'd be surprised if I saw a headline with a lion picking up a bazooka and blowing away a big game hunter.

This is also why I took issue with Movie Bob's take on the Predators (I know, Movie Bob really?), as his entire stance was to dismiss the interpretation of them as being cruel warriors seeking a challenge and just rail home "The Predators are idiots and Trump's sons in Space and you're wrong for thinking otherwise." The Predators came across as more interesting than the other slasher and alien invader ilk because of the sports hunter dynamic lending well to a Proud Warrior Race Guy interpretation. Which is why it bothers me when they're treated like any other alien invader without the justification of "they're renegades" because even poachers don't want to graft elephant tusks on themselves for instance.

I also dislike the idea they're enhancing themselves with alien DNA because it weakens a bit the whole honor code in a sense, because the whole aspect of going to foreign planets to hunt people that can and will defend themselves is to prove their superiority to the prey. When they are constantly upgrading themselves, they're kind of cheating by enhancing themselves and thereby implicitly admitting that Predators (with no alterations) are inferior to other species.

In a more blunt manner, if the Predator's Hunting the Most Dangerous Game habits is a sport of a kind, DNA splicing is the Sci-fi equivalent of Performance Enhancing Drugs.

Heck the third movie took this to the extreme, with those Predators specifically taking a group of incredibly dangerous people and dropping them onto a planetary game reserve basically, to hunt:

-A former special forces soldier turned mercenary.

-A Mexican Drug Cartel enforcer/member of Los Zetas.

-A convicted mass murderer/implied rapist who killed over thirty people and was on Death Row in San Quentin.

-A US Army Air Calvary Soldier.

-A seemingly mild-mannered doctor who turns out to be a vicious serial killer.

-A death squad commander from Sierra Leone.

-A Russian Spetsnaz soldier fighting in Chechnya.

-An assassin for the Yakuza.

There does seem to be something of a civil war/class dispute going on in Predator society. It doesn't sound that bad for there to be hunters who are juicing. Maybe they're part of the caste that still hunts for sport, but they don't really give a donk about honor/playing fair, at least not as much as the earlier Predators.

And it'd be kind of neat to see these creatures evolving their tactics instead of doing the same tried and true "fight fair, hunt worthy prey" shtick in every single movie. Because this makes 2-4 instances now where a hunter has gone to Earth and hasn't come back.

It even makes sense considering humans have moved up from being slaughtered by the dozens to having their most dangerous members brought to a game planet to capturing a live Predator. The Predators might see them as an increasingly dangerous foe that warrants more attention.

So if the predators (or at least one group of them) want to colonize earth because of Global Warming then why would they invade at all, just what till human civilization has collapsed because predators love the heat and it will have to get much hotter for that to happen.

Although that does lend credence to my clan of exiles theory as they could be invading earth just to stick it to the other clans as it's been predator hunting grounds for centuries.

There does seem to be a growing faction in Yautja society that does not care much about honor or fair play.

And the reason they are invading Earth is because they want to hunt humans while they still can before humans go extinct.

The whole idea of a film focused more on the Predator culture and their clashes over their ideal of honor might make a better film than this.

[up][tup] To be honest, the idea of there being a culture conflict implied in Predators and this film somewhat sounded a lot more interesting. I have an interest in seeing those sorts of things in general thanks to things like the Bad Bloods from the EU.

Yeah, but in Bad Blood and others the conflict is part of the story.

Here, the whole thing about Predator juicing up with DNA is nothing more than an excuse to discard the classic Predator, because who cares about this iconic movie monster other than the fanbase, in favor of "look at my OC, he is larger, meaner, badder, it makes the classic Perd look like a poodle, I'm such a genius".

The predator fanbase largely didn't care about the black Predators from Predators. The thing they were interested was in the idea of the classic teaming up with humans to take on the new threat.

That movie threw away its chance when it was in its grasp, and this one decided to pay lip service to set a largely contentious plot device and instead focus entirely on the new Pred.

Watching this movie now as we speak.

Not really impressed. But not disappointed.

So....ultimately just watching.

Edit: Watched some more. And now I'm disappointed. This is why you don't have kids in Predator.

I watched it yesterday on Netflix.

Holy crap, was this one baaad. I liked the other Predator movies, but this one was just aggressively stupid. There are points where it almost goes into self-parody like with the Predator-dog or the Predator using a dead guy's arm to give a thumbs up, but there are scenes that take themselves way too seriously for that to be the case. The Predators act nothing like the previous films and it turns into an OTT CGI-fest that zaps away any tension from the action.

And that's not even going into how the film depicts autism. Seriously? "Autism is the next step in evolution"? How did this make into a major studio release in 2018? This is easily the worst in the franchise.

I outright reject the premise that this is the worst Predator film.

Some of the ideas are insanely stupid, yeah, but I'd rather have this than the first in a different setting with some new ideas to add (not-enough) spice.

I would say that the next step in the series is the humans setting a trap and hunting the predators, which is ironically what the stinger of this film alludes to.

Shame that we had to get this film first.

Really surprised to see this. I was convinced the franchise would go to television after how big a flop The Predator was.

Would it even be able to get released? The Thomas Brothers filed to terminate Disney's IP rights sometime within the last two years, so I'm questioning if the film will even be able to get made.
