I saw it. While it's no M3, I still liked this one. It's definitely for the fans.

[up] You can probably understand this one just fine if you've seen the show.

But the real question is... are there any "pengwings" in it?

Saw it.

Overall it's what I expected. Even for a franchise that's already wacky, this one amps it up more! I loved the animation on everyone, and it's very much for the fans! I have a few gripes though. 1.) How come Team Penguins is perfectly competent on their own, but the second they're up against the North Wind, they suck at everything they do?? 2.) Skipper talks waaaaay too often! I got kind of sick of his voice by the end.

I saw the film yesterday as well. I'll be a bit more lenient on it and say that the biggest drawback was that it felt too much like an hour and a half long television episode than it did an emotional film that balances comedy, like Kung Fu Panda. The penguins IMHO seemed to work a little better when they had someone completely straight to play off of- which is sort of what the film does with the North Wind but no, sorry I like Zoosters better. And finally Whacked Out Conspiracy is not the main theme of the film.

However, if you go into this film only expecting to see the Penguins do spy stuff that they did in the other films, you'll like it fine. The villain is a complete joke, I don't even think they attempt to make him threatening, but manages to be very funny. And being a continuity stickler, I found the film actually ties in very nicely to being a Madagascar sequel in a believable way (unlike another spinoff film) and I was surprised at how many nods to the previous series is in it. Like Mort 08 said, the mid-credits scene is one of the best parts.

[[up]][[up]] It seemed like Benedict went out of his way to pronounce the hard g "Pen-GOO-win" for that exact reason.

It does seem like the characters in the North Wind were created as straight men for the penguins to bounce off of, but they don't get nearly as much screentime as we are led to believe, and no one but Classified gets any characterization beyond a behavior.

Dave was a completely comedic villain, but a cartoon octopus disguising himself as a not-quite-all-there human is creatively brilliant, and he still works within the universe of the Madagascar franchise.

Looks like it isn't doing too well here in the good old US..

I'm starting to wonder about Dreamworks' future. I never liked the company, but I don't want them to go bankrupt or something along the lines of that.

At this point, the only downside I see to Dreamworks going away is that Disney would be in charge again, which I really don't want.

[up] Not really...There are other companies out there. Granted, Laika and Aartman concentrate on Stop Motion, which is a niche Disney doesn't really dabble in that often, but there is still Blue Skye, Reel FX (well, no hit for them yet, but they are steadily improving), Illuminations and Warner Brothers has apparently decided they want a piece from the cake, too. None of them can really challenge Disney, but then, neither could Dream Works...the only true challenger on the market was Pixar, and Disney was their distributer from the get go.

.... I would call The Book Of Life a hit by the audiences, but not really for its box office performance.

[up][up]The thing about Dreamworks though is that it tends to release a lot more animated films, per year, than any of those smaller independently run studios. Also, they were considerably the biggest rival to Pixar during the 90s and early 2000s, meaning their company has had a longer running family name than any of the others.

Anyway, I actually really liked this film- its considerably better than the TV show and I enjoyed the action more than Dragon 2.

I saw ot and liked it but two things underwhelmed me. The romance sideplot and the fact they pushed unneeded drama with Private. It kind of confused me since this drama was never mentioned in the previous movies.

for the longest time while watching, I thought Dave was voiced by either Christoph Waltz or P Eter Stormare trying to do a American accent. I did not expect Malkovich doing the voice. That slight twinge of a accent really caught me off guard.

I'm glad Stormare is getting work, he deserves it.

Usually I'm not a big Cumberbatch fan(thanks to his fanbase, I hav a similar problem with Tom Hiddleston) but his vocal direction was put to good use.

I'll play devil's advocate here and say that Private's storyline actually seemed to make the most sense to me. Consider all the times Skipper asked Private to merely look "cute and cuddly" while the rest of the team was digging to antartica or had him play the bait to lure the foosa while all the other members actually did the action or they had to rescue him in an Xmas special. It was a relatively unspoken issue- Private never got to share in any of the action or really become a hero and I think how they finally addressed it works in this film.
