Oh. Well they did do Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadow . . . and TMNT (2014) . . . and all of the Bayformer films (including the previously mentioned Bumblebee film).

Y’know I should be more optimistic and compare this film to the last three live action video game movies Warcraft, Tomb Raider and Rampage. All of those films are . . . average at best (?) but otherwise films I find enjoyable overall.

Ugggggggh

During the discussion, Moritz shared with the audience how he sold Gianopulos on making an animated version of Sonic, a classic Sega video game character. The Paramount boss was well aware of the fact that video games don’t translate successfully to film, but there was a hook, and Moritz made a short clip to show exactly what the tone and theme would be for the furry blue character.

Gianopulos was sold on Sonic‘s story. “He’s a juvenile delinquent on the adventures in a pretty straight rural environment with a local policeman. It was instantly engaging and it was good enough where you could see where it’s going,” he said.

Yes they made the guy who rescue small animals from turning into robots a bloody hoodlum.

Sonic's a snarker and a bit of an ass at times but juvenile delinquent seems like a pretty big stretch. He's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold at worst not some street rat. I wonder if they'll actually have animal people in this world or if Sonic's presence will just be unexplained.

His nemesis, Dr. Eggman, is a wealthy industrialist. Make Eggman a Villain with Good Publicity, have him run a PR campaign to smear Sonic's reputation, or have him outright bribe the relevant authorities to have Sonic declared a criminal, and bam. A "juvenile delinquent" Sonic who won't make me roll my eyes.

But I don't have high hopes that the movie's taking this route.

If I wanted to watch a questionable piece of Sonic media where the story has an unnecessary focus on a some random human and his friendship with Sonic to the point of downplaying the canon game characters, I'd just watch Sonic X again.

I guess it makes since for Jim Carrey to play Eggman:

One is a menace and a threat to public safety due to his own misconception of a branch of science.

And the other is Dr. Eggman who is most certainly not anti-vaccine.

...I'm at a loss for words.

On one hand, this could be genius casting in disguise, but on the other hand, this could go very bad.

...My brain hurts.

At the very least if this ends up being such an enormous train wreck that it's entertaining, I'd consider it a win.

I guess Danny Devito doesn’t want to be a part of any video game adaptation. I mean sure Detective Pikachu is just something out of a 4chan, post but one of the most popular Sonic live action movie fan poster on the internet has Robotnik as Danny.

I think the most confusing thing is that I don't know who this movie is meant to appeal to. Sonic is the type of franchise that would appeal primarily to kids with an older Periphery Demographic similar to what you get for other popular animated movies. But this movie is live action and nothing about it seems like it would appeal to kids or older Sonic fans.

I'm honestly wondering if there was some half baked script they wanted to make and the Sonic name was just slapped onto it to try and get a bit more attention to the project.

Honestly I'm not really complaining about the idea of Jim Carrey as Eggman. The actor does have the capabilities to bring the villain to live and Eggman is certainly the eccentric type of character that Carrey is well known to play as. I guess the only way to 100 percent accept this cast choice is to see what he would look like in costume, which definately requires a sort of fat suit for the role.

Otherwise, yeah, this movie is all over the place as to who this appeals to. We all know with the name of Sonic this would appeal to kids, but with the whole inclusion of a human male lead that isn't the title main character, the whole Sonic being a delinquent plot element (which I actually don't mind considering the characters bad butt attitude . . . what can I say, I see Sonic as the Bart Simpsons of video game protagonists), and the whole stigma of live action/animation blend movies there is no denying there is a sort of audience alination going on with the production of the movie.

Oy, I wonder how much longer are we going to have to wait until we see what Sonic looks like.

I think that (aside from the CG/live-action thing) is what will make or break this for everyone.

[up][up][up], [up][up][up][up]Someone did ask the film's screenwriter about what Sonic would look like (siting concerns that it would resemble the fanfilm's interpretation of the character), and it was confirmed that it would still look like Sonic but "a little more realistic".

Some more information about MGM's failed attempt to adapt Sonic.

I highly recommend this read. Pretty good rundown of Sega's ambitious plans for Sonic in the 90s.

[up] So, the film would've been Sonic Live: The Movie? I don't get the need to include a POV kid character who brings Sonic out into the real world. Although this section does sound hilarious as hell:

Sonic tries to track down Robotnik but gets distracted and confused by the real world. When he jumps onto rooftops, the chimneys break, and when he hits a lamp post it hurts him. He races through traffic and causes car wrecks, and when he tries to impress a girl she scares in terror. “The real world isn’t ready for a blue hedgehog walking down the street,” the treatment reads.

Hollywood has been very attached to the idea of putting characters in the literal real world in animation and video game adaptations in the last few decades (either by explicitly porting them into reality or by changing their world so that it resembles reality), even though it barely ever works.

Does kind of make me wonder what a 90s take on the stock plot featuring Sonic would have been like, though. Like, would it still have been as painfully hip as the movies we have now in the 2010s are? Probably so.
