Creepy fan art aside, I'm absolutely elated to see this fanbase explode before it's even come out. I mean, whenever Nintendo releases a new IP if bombs, falls off the face of the earth, (*cough* The Wonderful 101 *cough*) and is never spoken of again by either the company or whiny gamers pretending they actually want something new and really just throw a tantrum when something isn't Metroid or a Majora's Mask remake (*cough* Codename Steam *cough*), but for ONCE Nintendo is releasing a new IP and people are ACTUALLY paying attention to it. For once.

@R.J.: I agree. That's why I secretly hope that Splatoon will relentlessly parody popular shooters with every chance it gets. I call dibs on the Gears Of War inkling.
A good writer puts in a lot of details in there story. But a great one gets a story from a single detail.

I can't imagine how the game itself would parody other shooters, unless it has a campaign mode.
And parody is something I don't see Nintendo doing. Occasionally Nintendo of America might add a funny joke in their translation (like E. Gadd saying that a scary painting of him would make his diner look more "mature" and less "kiddy"), but Nintendo of Japan doesn't actually parody competitors.

Not direct parody of certain franchises, but given some of the writing in the Mario RPGs, I wouldn't be surprised to see some general parodies of modern shooter grittiness.

It is getting a Single Player story mode. I don't know what they will do for the story but it is having one.
