[up][up] HERETIC! BURN THE WITCH!

[up]I concur. Also, Hans. There was no reason for him to be evil. I can't think of a single thing that was gained from having him be an attempted usurper that couldn't have been fulfilled just as easily if he were a good guy.

[up] Seconded. I think the love triangle, the way the story flowed and how well the music fit with the setting were the three big problems I had with Frozen, and all of them were more or less fixed here. As were the three big problems I had with HTTYD 2.

I forgot to mention this earlier, but this was the first animated movie I've seen since Secret of Kells where I got all emotional; specifically for the characters.

The first 10 minutes with the main characters in their youth reminded me a lot of my younger years. When it got to the part where Maria had to move away from San Angel for a long time, it hit me hard. Not to get too personal with details of my life, but I knew this girl from elementary school who had to move away to another state at a very young age after we already knew each other for several years....except I never saw her again.

Just pick any character (other than Chakal or Maria's dad). Chances are I had some sort of varying level of connection with. Manolo and Maria I identified with the most, and I think Jorge's cutesy art style really helps that. Hell, I was about ready to cry at the moments where Manolo is apologizing to the spirit of the Toros, and Maria breaking down and sobbing at the "death" of Malano. Though I thought the movie could have lingered on the emotional scenes a little longer, especially the death of Carlos.

Me and father almost broke out singing "How do you solve a problem like Maria" at the beginning but we were so enthralled by the film we shut up. [lol]

Good thing I wasn't the only one thinking that, especially since they had a chorus of nuns.

Manolo/Maria is my OTP, but I ended up getting a lot more invested in Gravepainters than I thought I would. If Gutierrez does decide to do an anthology series, I hope that at least those two get carried over into the new story.

I'll drink to that. XD

Ron Perlman really rocked as Xibalba

Since Xibalba is seemingly Aztec but his design is a bit inspired by the conquistadors, maybe that'll be important for the next film. Especially since the animators had some designs they wanted to render in the film but couldn't, so they just slapped them in the beginning parts that explained the land of remembering.

Ron Perlman was inspired casting!

I've never run into a Ron Perlman role I didn't like. At least, not because of his performance, which is always awesome.

You haven't seen Star Trek Nemesis, then.

Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great

-must resist urge to go watch Star Trek Nemesis-

...Too late, I looked up some clips. Almost no lines, all that terrible makeup and he still looks like one of the more interesting parts of that movie.

He's not. Unless you're aware it's him, you won't even notice the Viceroy.

So he's wasted. That doesn't surprise me.

We need to get this back on topic. Um...have some of my crappy fanart! And then good fanart!

It's already made back over half its budget, and it hasn't opened in most countries yet. Plus, there's only one good movie coming out this week, so it may not drop that much.

This is a movie not coming from any of the 6 big corporate hollywood studios, and they only have one previous film before this one which was only fair/mediocre, so it's not like they can market it as "from the studio that brought you..." in the trailers. Plus, the unconventional art style may drive people away.

I don't think the art style has been a problem. In fact, it's been the one thing that nearly everyone has consistently praised.

Interestingly, I read somewhere that the original plan was to release Book of Life first. Probably best that they didn't do that in the long run.

[up][up] Ooh, no wonder it's never mentioned anywhere that this studio's done anything before.

I'm seeing this movie tomorrow evening with my brother. Looking forward to it.

I hope the studio's next film will give them a better chance to be remembered just like what Book of Life has done for them.

Saw it today. Good movie. Some of the music kinda clashed with the setting, but it was good covers for good music. :)
