What are your 2014 summer anthems?

Summer is coming, and it's a special season for pop music.

What songs are you listening to that are fit for a beach party or some under-the-sun fun?

I've created a playlist of my current favorites. Most of them are hits (I have another playlist with "colder" songs that are more obscure), but I have a couple oddballs. I wonder what some of you non-radio-pop lovers prefer listening to in the summer:

  • Iggy Azalea – Fancy
  • Ariana Grande – Problem
  • Kimbra – 90's Music
  • Skrillex – Ragga Bomb
  • Lindsey Stirling – Roundtable Rival
  • Marina & The Diamonds – Electra Heart
  • Michael Jackson – Slave to the Rhythm
  • Sia – Chandelier
  • Pharrell Williams – Come Get It Bae
  • Ed Sheeran – Sing
  • Calvin Harris – Summer
  • KONGOS – Come With Me Now
  • Coldplay – A Sky Full Of Stars

What about you?

(But seriously, though, really glad to see Kongos on your list. They've become one of my new favorite bands lately.)

I've listened to their album, but only once. I need to give them another listenthrough. Their history (all sons of a singer-songwriter with niche cred) is interesting enough, along with their instruments.

I mean, they used an accordion in "Come with Me Now", alongside a pedal steel guitar. We need more accordions.

Sia has a new album? Gotta check that out.

Only other music from this year to cross my radar has been Elizabeth & the Catapult.

[up] It's just a lead single (1000 Forms of Fear comes out in July), but if you haven't already heard it, she did "Elastic Heart" for the Catching Fire soundtrack.

Check out A Hawk And A Hacksaw, or Fantastic Lies of Gypsy Rose by Miwa Gemini.

I like the intricate instrumentation and summery feel of "River Bank" by Brad Paisley. It's also a different kind of melody for him. There is a way to make good, likeable "bro-country".

Wasn't released in the Summer, but it fits the season well enough, so I'm counting it.

Swans, "Bring the Sun / Toussaint L'ouverture" from To Be Kind.

No fucks, no regrets.

Also: "Nathalie Neal" from the same album.

I am not even close to joking this time around.

Live forever in this song.

No mention of Nico & Vinz's "Am I Wrong?" yet?

OK, it's from 1985, but I only recently discovered it – and I'll be damned if this isn't a sunny party anthem.
