I know! I was just talking about this with a fellow at work yesterday who just finished reading the first. It's also a pity more people haven't read them as they're ludicrously fun (as one would expet Douglas Adams' work to be).
"They called me mad, I called them mad, and damn them, they outvoted me." - Nathaniel Lee, playwright, upon being committed to BedlamWhich one? Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency or The Long, Dark Tea-time of the Soul? They're both excellent.
"I just read something interesting."
"What are you reading?"
"The phone book."
"Oh, it was probably Zbigniew. They always keep you guessing until the end."
I liked the first one better myself, but they're both awesome. Why doesn't Dirk get as much love as the Hitchhiker's Guide?
ERROR: The current state of the world is unacceptable. Save anyway? YES/NORabid fans. For example, Adams once showed up at a university to give a speech and Q&A session, and one of the attendees stepped up to the question microphone in a bathrobe, carrying a towel. Reportedly, Adams berated the attendees, then left.
Dunno how true that is, but the fact remains that Hitchhiker's came first and is the reason Adams has so many fans in the first place, so he kept cranking them out. When he first started Salmon Of Doubt, he didn't know if it was going to be H 2 G 2 or Dirk related.

I haven't read them since grade 8 or so, so it's definitely time for me to re-read them.
(My favorite bit when they explain how they choose who gets a record deal by how well their name can be formatted as a trademark.)
Also, has anyone read Last Chance To See? Possibly better than both Hitchhiker's and 'Gently combined.

She's playing with fire! He's not ready for Nibbly Pig!My favorite bit of randomness is the I Ching calculator. "There wasn't a red button, but there was a blue button marked 'red'..."
Partially because of the implicit suggestion that if you do, in fact, multiply 6 times 9, the answer you will get is A SUFFUSION OF YELLOW.
ERROR: The current state of the world is unacceptable. Save anyway? YES/NOI'd forgotten the I Ching calculator! It made me happy to think about. It must be made real.

I just have to thank the troper who recommended it, I had a blast reading Dirk Gently. Too bad we don't have more sequels.
