Yonhap: South Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labour dismissed a petition claim that Hanni of the K-pop group NewJeans had experienced workplace bullying under the group's label.
Under current South Korean laws, entertainers are not classified as workers who are legally protected from workplace harassment, but rather as "exceptional entities" who operate under exclusive contracts with their management agencies.
Ah yes, the "contractor" bullshit that gives corpos excuses not to provide benefits or treat their moneymakers with actual respect.
Disgusted, but not surprised![]()

lmao that fucking 'we're the big and oppressed :(' analogy. i dont know who're worse: Korean Boomers or Japanese Boomers. i guess at least Korean boomers are upfront about being racists all the time instead of when it's socially acceptable
![]()
and
even worse: newjeans' agency got caught trying to spark a flame war by pretending to be unrelated stans slandering a 'rival' kpop group. it is one thing when it's performer vs performer drama and it is another when it is the agency trying to bait them into it
ppreetttttyyyyy sure that was common in jpop too

AP: Japan holds first memorial for ‘all workers’ at Sado gold mines but blurs WWII atrocity. Why?
Japan and South Korea held separate memorials for laborers who died at the Sado gold mines
after South Korea decided to boycott the planned joint memorial ceremony. The joint memorial ceremony was the result of an agreement between the two countries, where South Korea would support Japan's bid to have the gold mines listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site under the condition that there would be a memorial ceremony to the Koreans who were enslaved at the mine.
However
, the Japanese government kept dragging its feet on holding the memorial, and the South Korean government was frustrated that the name of the event did not mention who the memorial was for. Also, the Japanese government told the South Korean government to foot the bill for the travel expenses of the victims' families. The mine installed signs saying that Koreans worked in dangerous conditions but omitted the fact that there was forced labor. Reports alleging that a Japanese government official scheduled to take part in the ceremony visited the Yaskuni Shrine also added to the suspicions that the Japanese government was not acting in good faith.
I've heard from a watcher in Tokyo who kept an eye on it. He said that Kyodo got the details wrong, including the supposed LDP politician who was alleged to have visited Yasukuni. He got pissed after Kyodo still ran the story before revisions were made.

The crown prince made the remarks to reporters in Tokyo earlier in the week following an interim report compiled by ruling and opposition parties in September, in which they said such female members should be allowed to keep their imperial status as a way to address the shrinking royal household.
In 2000, I was reading a history book that ended at the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Cold War. After closing the book I thought, man, I missed out all the most important historical events and things won't get interesting.

Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing. The National Assembly voted to end martial law
Under South Korean law, a majority vote of the National Assembly can end martial law. Despite the Army descending on the National Assembly in an attempt to block the vote, the lawmakers barricaded themselves inside and unanimously voted to end martial law. Even the PPP agreed to end martial law
"Enshittification truly is how platforms die"-Cory DoctorowSo, the president declared martial law over the assembly's "insurrectionist" actions, and then the assembly came in and immediately voted to end it.
That's... honestly at least a little bit funny. I'm sure a few decades from now, history-themed content creators are going to make memes out of this. Possibly involving Spidermen pointing at each other.
On a more serious note, actually barricading the army out of the building long enough to hold the vote must have been a real effort. Like, much respect for that.
I assume the next vote will be regarding Yoon's impeachment?

Seoul Metro, the company that operates Seoul's subway system, is under fire for racism against Chinese people.
Someone filed a complaint that the Chinese-language announcements on the PA system were too loud. The company posted a public response saying that "when two or more Chinese people meet, sometimes they become villains who are loud and cause disturbances" and thus they must make Chinese-language announcements about etiquette aboard subway trains. They also said they would consider only making announcements on the PA system only in Korean and English (and not Chinese nor Japanese).
After public outcry, the company apologized and said they never considered removing foreign language PA announcements.
Previously, the company had to apologize after internal documents were leaked
detailing the company's strategy for carrying out a smear campaign against disability activists protesting the lack of accessibility. The document even compared the disability activists to Ukraine and the company to Russia, saying that the activists were a highly motivated minority, and the company was a majority without many options.
