There is only so long Pakistan can milk Kashmir as actively as it is now (as opposed to passive indoctrination per usual) before the people get tired of it and focus on the failing economy. Which means sooner rather than later, Pakistan has to shit or get off the pot with regards to what it is willing to do, physically, in Kashmir.

[up]Given how much of a hot topic the kashmir issue is for both countries, I don't think the people are going to get tired of it anytime soon if at all. Kashmir is treated as both a national issue and a religious issue (persecuted muslims) in Pakistan if I am not wrong. Add to that the impression of Pakistanis (from what I have seen) that the current Indian Hindu nationalist govt is heavily persecuting Muslims brought about by news of the current lynchings, the rise of the Sangh and their increased visible bigotry against Muslims and Modi's reputation as the "butcher of Gujarat" thanks to the 2002 riots, and I highly doubt the average Pakistani muslim is going to stop caring about the plight of his 'Kashmiri brothers and sisters'. And speaking of milking the Kashmir issue,

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, on Friday, warned of a direct military confrontation between 'nuclear-armed' states India and Pakistan over the Kashmir issue. In an editorial piece in New York times, Khan minced no words in saying that if the world 'does nothing' to 'stop Indian assault' on Kashmir, 'there will be consequences for the whole world'.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy on Saturday said that the country may not reach its target of being a $5-trillion economy if “no new economic policy is forthcoming”. Swamy’s comments followed the news of India’s Gross Domestic Product growth falling to 5% in the April-June quarter – the fourth straight quarter of slower growth and the slowest growth in over six years.

[up]Pakistanis only care about Kashmir the same way Americans care about Israel: in the abstract as a concept. In the day to day, getting browbeaten over the head with Kashmir when local issues are as dire as they are, they simply won't have the time to get worked up when they gotta worry about putting food on the table.

With Assam’s final National Register of Citizens (NRC) excluding over 19 lakh people, former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Tarun Gogoi on Friday said the list published today is not “error-free” and argued that “lakhs of genuine Indian citizens” have not made the cut, while many foreigners have been included. He called for a review of all 19 lakh names and asked the NRC authorities to explain what went wrong.

The state of the economy today is deeply worrying, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, adding that "all-round mismanagement" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has resulted in the slowdown. The veteran Congress leader's comments come two days after government data showed that India's economy expanded at its slowest pace in over six years in the quarter ended June 30.

The Jammu and Kashmir police have adopted a novel approach involving “revolving-door arrests” to contain the situation on the streets in the wake of withdrawal of the State’s special status on August 5. According to data with the police headquarters (PHQ) in Srinagar, around 1,500 youth have been picked up and released under a continuous process across the Kashmir Valley in the past few weeks. This comes amid rising incidents of stone throwing after Id.

United States must support UN-backed peaceful resolution in Kashmir, US senator and presidential contender Bernie Sanders said on Saturday, adding that he was "deeply concerned about the situation" in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir has been under strict restrictions since the government announced its decision to end its special status and split it into two union territories on August 5.

The ongoing standoff between India and Pakistan spilled over to Maldives Parliament on Sunday after Islamabad tried to raise the issue of abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. The exchange of words took place at the 4th South Asian Speakers’ Summit in the Maldives between Pakistan’s Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh and Pakistan Senator Quratulain Marri. Besides the trio, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was also present at the event.

So Cyril Almeida, a Pakistani journalist who generally has the pulse of Pakistan's reality and calls it like he sees it, says that the far right types in Pakistan have been outright directly asking the Pakistan Army to intervene via jihad. Almeida has said that there is only so long the military can resist that kind of public pressure, consequences be damned.

With Imran Khan losing venues and, frankly, an audience to make his own case to, thats only going to become more probable.

[up]So is there a chance we are going to get a Kargil 2.0 from their army soon?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to move the Supreme Court to re-verify the National Register of Citizens (NRC) data as both the central and the state BJP feel that there's enough room for errors. The BJP will also seek re-verification of 10 per cent of samples from the mainland of Assam, the demand which will be against the draft NRC.

The NRC has problems - but the biggest is apathy, both administrative and public.

The damned thing was supposed to start in 2012. The government dithered. Then in 2014 they started it after the Supreme Court raged at them to get moving.

The first draft was published in 2018 - with 900,000 people missing from the list. This despite officials yelling at people to get their documents together and provide them when asked. Then the government extended it by another year to placate everyone.

And after a year's extension, there are still 190,000 people off the list. The xenophobes are unhappy because a lot of the "other" (read - non-Assamese) are on the list when they didn't want them there.

Gibbering idiocy writ large. Do people really need five freaking years to get things straightened out? Ridiculous.

RE: Kargil 2.0 - It'll be far more humiliating than that for the Pakistanis, and the Establishment knows it. But if Almeida is being serious (usually is), it's bad news for them and everyone else.

London: The UK on Tuesday said any allegations of human rights violations in Kashmir since India revoked the Article 370 of the Constitution must be "thoroughly, promptly and transparently" investigated. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told M Ps in the House of Commons in the first parliamentary session after a long summer recess that he had raised the concerns with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during a conversation on August 7 and that the UK will carefully monitor the situation in Kashmir.

Also we are talking about a heavily armed military against civilians armed with literal sticks and stones. Using lethal force against such civilians is only going to rightfully bring criticism to the military not the civilians.

Throwing rocks is pretty immature but not really worth having heavily armed police shoot civilians for it. Similar things are happening in Hong Kong and though I disagree with the protestors allowing themselves to resort to petty forms of violence, I and most people agree that the police response of violently beating them is an abuse of their power. I don't see why that'd be different in this case, or hell, any. Even if we had a situation involving a bigoted asshole shouting racial slurs against the military, as long as it doesn't escalate too much farther past that I don't think the response should be to turn him into a bullet sponge.

The story is that the guy was just playing cricket nearby (according to his father) when police shot him with pellets right in the face.

The police tried to blame his injuries on a rock thrown by demonstrators, but the injuries are not consistent with that. They are consistent with injuries from being shot in the face with pellets.

So it seems like this isn't a case of stressed out police making a rock throwing protester into a bullet sponge. Rather, it was police shooting pellets into the face of a guy minding his own business.

What do I expect them to do? I expect them to accept that they're not getting what they want, shut the hell up and get used to it. Callous? Yes. But 60 years of that has gone far enough. India's been wasting time and resources there it could've used literally anywhere else.

I'll fully admit it's more than me being biased - for me, It's Personal. I've lost people - good people - to those provocateurs and their instigators. I've seen some of my oldest friends living in penury because they were driven out by the locals for being Kashmiri Pandits. So I have No Sympathy at all for the locals there whining now.

What goes around, comes around. I'm not going to apologize for my response to them - it might be irrational, but it is what it is. Feel free to criticize me for that.

If it's true that guy was minding his own business then thinking that makes it OK to unload into the face of a random innocent civilian is like agreeing with Liam Neeson's statement that it was OK to murder random black men just because his friend was raped by one. Even he realized why that was an incredibly warped belief to have.

To be taken with salt:

Satellite images show China road runs deep into Arunachal: Defence expert Abhijit Iyer-Mitra

When the Indian Army Wednesday denied BJP MP Tapir Gao’s claim that China was intruding into the Chaglagam and Bishing area of Arunachal Pradesh, I decided to look for anything that might hold as evidence of intrusion. I found no discernible evidence of intrusion in the Chaglagam region of the state. However, based on help from various open-source intelligence, or OSINT, handles, what we ended up detecting is far more serious: not only have the Chinese intruded in the northern region at Bishing about 175 km from Chaglagam, but they have also built a road approximately 1 kilometre deep into the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control. This road enters from the east where the border runs north-south, and runs parallel to the east-west orientation of the border.
