Guardian: Nobel peace prize auctioned by Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov fetches record $103.5m. Muratov, who was awarded the gold medal in October 2021, said proceeds would go to Unicef to help children displaced by Ukraine war.

Honestly, I think that kinda confirms they made the right choice to give it to him in the first place.

I need feedback from someone familiar with the Russian language.

I've noticed that Russian has a habit of contracting multiple words by clipping and then attaching them together, e.g. spetsnaz from spetsialnogo naznacheniya. So with that in mind, would it be plausible to contract narodnoe opolcheniye to naropol?

Better use narop, I think. And it will give a very early-Soviet-culture sound to a Russian ear, especially if it is in official usage.

I don't know... "Naropol Divisions" seems better to me than "Narop Divisions" as a term for the Soviet Union's hastily formed defense forces in the Eastern Front of WW 2 (officially called Narodnoe Opolcheniye).

Doesn't pol sound like the suffix of a city name.

That comes from the Greek polis, after the long history of Greek settlement along the Black Sea coast. Polk (полк), on the other hand, means "regiment", so I guess you could use that as an alternate designation/suffix.

Huh. Opolcheniye is actually derived from polk — opolčítʹ (o- + polk + -ítʹ) + -énije — so I guess Narpolk works.

Just for clarity, why not Naropol? Just because it can be mistaken for ending in -pol as in "city"?

It is a feeling. Probably because it begs for a soft ending, and then sounds like a pseudo-Hellenized city.
