[up]Just Elsa, I keep saying, it's the best way to keep it from throwing fridge logic into any sequel.

It's a coma, people wake up from those all the time. One wonders what drifting with a person in a coma could do.

Also, it's the same verse where "analog" is a perfectly valid explanation for EMP resistance.

[up]But not brain-death, which is what I took away from Anna's condition at the end.

Well, it's never clarified. So it's kind of a Schrodinger's Cat situation.

Plus, killing her off is literally the same thing that happened to Raleigh and Yancy.

The first part yes, the second part you really don't like Pacific Rim, do you?

Not really, no. A lot of spectacle, but as a story it falls flat.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that. tongue

Very little fridge logic, actually. I'd imagine the pons makes it much easier to mend mental maladies, if I opt for that path. The real issue is I've ended Arctic Rim with Elsa more or less determined to see things through the end even if her country has decided to pull out of the PPDC, so it seems weird if all of a sudden she's demoralized again.

In Raleigh's case, it was he got PTSD, and then he got over it over the course of 5 years and then discovering something to fight for. So I'm imagining potential downtime bonding in the break room over tea or something.

[up]Yeah, but you implied that Anna's braindead. That tends to mean that cognitive functions are no longer working. Even if she came back, Anna'd probably suffer from heavy brain damage. This isn't something you can just write into a story for extra pathos and then discard when it's sequel time. You kiddin' me, that's horrible storytelling. And it's a cheap cop-out.

So...symptomatically, what should be the difference between "coma" and "braindead"?

[up]If you're writing in brain death, there should be almost no response to outside stimulus, if any. No activity in the brain beyond basic cardiovascular and respiratory functions. Might need a respirator, depending on how injured the rest of Anna is. If you didn't have those things at the end of Arctic Rim, at least mention some of them in the follow up as a reminder of how much this fight has cost Elsa.

Also, find a medical book that would explain the difference.

This should help.

Essentially, the fact Anna is in a hospital points to a coma. Brain-dead patients are usually allowed to be released to home care, which the Royal House of Norway could certainly afford.

EDIT: Also, Anna breathing without a respirator points towards coma, and there's also this direct quote from Chapter 3:

In real life, there was nothing, only the gnawing pangs in her gut as Elsa's vision narrowed in on a comatose Anna still in her sickbed,

Emphasis mine. It's explicitly referred to as a coma.

Well, to be fair, I was just using "comatose" as a synonym for "still". She is mentioned wearing one of those breathing mask things immediately after though. I'm guessing that's not the same thing as a respirator?

(I mean, wikipedia can tell me a lot of things, and I like doing research and all, but there comes a point where I need to actually write stuff too...)

I would also like to point out that no Anna scenes in the coda is because she's simply not there. I mean I wrote it so that either coma or brain-death (or, hell, just a temporary state and she's actually up and running by the time of Ch 4: Coda, you just don't see her because she's not physically present) were equally valid conclusions...at least, I *think* I did.

People have been telling me Fritz should never end up with Elsa just because watching him fail is too hilarious. My plan is to keep cranking up Fritz's failures until they're begging me to pair him with Elsa just to end his suffering.

[up] Poor Fritz... XD I'm somewhere in between; I feel really bad for him, but yet, I'm constantly entertained by his misery. I suppose having to keep up with Anna 24/7 will give him some much-needed exercise, so there's that...

Also, there's no ominous cliffhanger again. What's going on here...?

But yeah, it was pretty interesting, though I'm wondering what exactly these flashbacks that have been happening lately are going to lead up to...

[up] Now, that's more like it; I was getting kinda worried there for awhile.

Seriously, though; I liked how most of the characters got a chance to shine in this one, even Olaf, who's kinda been out of focus for awhile. But, I've gotta know... Is the Wight Gollum? He talks to himself, so surely that must be the only explanation.

[up]Yeah, he's pretty much Gollum mixed with the villain from Anastasia, plus the classic Disney villains (Jafar, Ursula, Maleficent, etc...)
