My favorite genre has got to be EDM, which is kind of funny considering no one else in my family likes it much at all (especially my closest brother, with whom I have almost nothing in common when it comes to media). There isn't any other genre that I enjoy as consistently as this one.
Rock is a solid second place, though. I feel like it has a lot in common with EDM, like the focus on strong instrumentals over lyrics and running times frequently in excess of 5 minutes, which is a big part of the reason I like it so much. And also because electric guitars played well sound really cool.
Most Pop is pretty unremarkable to me, but with some searching I can find plenty of good artists in this category. Kelly Clarkson, Mika, Michael Buble, post-90s Backstreet Boys, etc. The trick is to weed out all the Nicki Minaj-alikes and artists who are only good for one hit single.
Also, I'm not sure where the Bee Gees and Tears For Fears go (are they Pop or Album Rock?), but I like them a lot too.
Now, if you want to know a genre I can't friggin stand, it's Country. Maybe it's just because I live in the midwest and have been bombarded with lame Country music constantly my entire life, but I just don't enjoy it at all even when it's objectively pretty good.
Yeah, sorry, that isn't how it works I presume. There's a search function precisely for this.
If you aren't going to bother looking to see if a thread like this already exists (especially considering what it is), then I'm not sure why you made it in the first place. Redundancy should best be avoided no matter what.
EDIT: There. Took me about 25 seconds and all I searched was "genre".

Though I've been involved in a fair amount of Metal-themed discussions fairly recently, the truth of the matter is that Metal makes up maybe a third of what I actually listen to at this point. I thought it'd be fun to post a list of sorts of the genres of music I like on here and compare notes with other tropers, see if anyone else has remotely similar tastes. Keep in mind I like a LOT of shit.
First off, Rock music, which includes, as far as I'm concerned:
-Metal (and unlike many, I don't immediately discount a band for being "hipster-bait" or whatnot. I also like a fair amount of Alt-Metal. There, I said it.)
-Punk (including some Emo and Pop-Punk, but I'm somewhat selective on those fronts)
-Progressive and Psychedelic Rock
-Alternative/Indie (I'm lumping Industrial, Gothic Rock, Post-Punk and New Wave into this category, but I like a lotta the stuff people usually mean by Alternative as well. And Indie pretty much IS Alternative, IMHO.)
-Rock & Roll/Roots Rock/Folk-Rock/Country-Rock/etc.
-Hard Rock (a uselessly vague term, but whatever)
And, on to the non Rock stuff. I admit, it's admittedly kinda a myopic thing to do, categorizing things as "Rock and non-Rock", but the other genres are somewhat more self-contained, whereas Rock has a ton of subgenres which not everyone even calls Rock in the first place.
-the occasional Pop song/artist (I don't hate the genre on the whole. It's just that for every good Pop song that's a hit, you do usually have 4 or so that suck. There's a trope for that, of course... The genre also has a lot of So Bad, It's Good going on.)
-Electronic music (including most genres of EDM. Which is a terribly hipster-ish term to use, but it does describe what the music is, to a point. After all, stuff that gets called EDM is electronic and can generally be danced to, for a given value of "dance", anyways. But anyways, I like at least some of most genres of Electronic music I've encountered, though my favorites are Big Beat, Drum & Bass, Detroit-style Techno, Acid House, Ambient House, classic Trance and the more atmospheric side of Dubstep. And Industrial, OF COURSE, but that came up earlier.)
-R&B/Soul/Funk/Disco/the occasional modern R&B thing (but only the occasional one)
-Reggae/Ska/Calypso/Caribbean music as a whole (though I'm not fond of some of the more Gangsta-esque Dancehall, for the same reasons as Gangsta Rap. Bob Marley and Peter Tosh are my heroes though...)
-Latin music (once again, vague category alert!), at least in its more traditional forms. Interesting rhythms going on.
-Jazz (pretty much all of it- have yet to meet Jazz I've actually hated. Fusion, Acid Jazz, Cool and various Bop-derived genres are faves though.)
-Hip-Hop (but not much of the Gangsta stuff, though again, there are some exceptions, and it is pretty well-produced at least. I prefer Alt-Rap and Political/Conscious Rap. And Old-School.)
-Folk music (it's the songs)
-Country music (but not Country-Pop so much, with a handful of exceptions. I prefer the more "authentic", for lack of a better term, styles. Which sounds terrible, but there it is...)
-World music (an overly general category, more so than any other I've listed. After all, it's basically "Folk music from places outside Europe and the Americas. Except Native American music winds up categorized as World music too. Fuck it. The point is, I like a lot of it. Been big into the whole Desert Blues genre lately especially. Tinariwen, Ali Farka Toure, etc.)
-the odd bit of Classical (another vague term, since Classical refers to a specific period in Western music history, and much of what gets called "Classical" doesn't actually come from that period) music. Though I find some of it boring (some of its too static/rigid for my tastes), there are works and composers I enjoy.
-and finally, some Musical Theatre and movie soundtracks. Yes, I like some Broadway productions. And Disney soundtracks. Real Men Wear Pink, after all...
Any thoughts? Anyone else?
