Anyone have a novel that they interpret very differently from its original intent? I was looking for "alternate interpretation" threads and found none, so I'm starting one.
For some reason, I started thinking about Harriet the Spy and I came to the conclusion that the author likely has Aspergers even if she didn't know it, and in her attempt to portray a character she could relate to, essentially created an Aspie in book form.
For example, Harriet dresses very practical, follows a strict routine, doesn't understand why people act the way they act and spies on them to learn about them, is totally blunt and honest to the point of offending people, has difficulty apologizing, interprets things literally (e.g. the "Harriet smells" note), and finally - her two friends are inversions of gender expectations of the era. Androgyny is a common feature of those on the spectrum.
I can find little information about the personal life of Louise Fitzhugh, other than her being a butch lesbian, but if she was creating a character she could relate to, then she's probably on the spectrum herself.
