People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.
Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.
To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html
2023 mod note:
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.
This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

I certainly have things to say, but I think I’ll take a cue from my mom and keep them under wraps, at least on these forums.
Self-serious autistic metalhead who goes by any pronouns. (avvie template source)Look this is a man who in the 80s and 90s during the AIDS crisis who read the names of people dying from AIDS and played horns and music over it to celebrate.
So good riddance. One of the people whose passing genuinely makes the Earth a better place.
He also mocked Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's so he's not getting any condolences from me any time soon.
"We are all so afraid, we are all so alone, we all so need from the outside the assurance of our own worthiness to exist."Guys this isn’t actually the grave dancing thread. There’s a reason I feel that politically contentious figures shouldn’t be posted here.

@Silasw: It is kind of funny how Fidel Castro, of all people, got a fairly respectful send-off from tropers in comparison to how we've been treating Rush Limbaugh's death.
I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.Probably because most people here English speakers and/or from the US as opposed to Cuban and thus do not have the full context of his awfulness. Also probably because Castro's record, for all the gross human rights violations he committed, did also result in some broad social change that improved the lives of many (whether they were worth it is another matter). Meanwhile I can't think of a single net positive thing Limbaugh has done for the US, considering the most neutral way I can describe him is that he was a shock jock who thrived on Refuge in Audacity.
It takes some effort to stage a revolution, after all.
Can we keep this thread strictly to those who died instead of debating on the okayness of grave dancing?
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...Martha Stewart, actress of In a Lonely Place and Daisy Kenyon, has died at 98.

It is crazy to think that the other Martha Stewart is now 79 years old, though.
