People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.

Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.

To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html

2023 mod note:

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

Raven Wilkinson, 83, Is Dead; Black Ballerina Braved Segregated South:

Raven Wilkinson, one of the first African-American dancers to perform with a major ballet company, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, died on Monday at her home in Manhattan. She was 83.

Her brother, Frost Bernie Wilkinson Jr., confirmed her death but did not specify a cause.

The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo was a high-profile company that toured the United States in the 1940s and ′50s, and the appearance of an African-American onstage as a Sylph or a Swan in the South could incur threats from the Ku Klux Klan. Though Ms. Wilkinson was lighter-skinned and encouraged to wear pale makeup onstage, she always refused to hide her race.

In recent years, she was a mentor and friend to Misty Copeland, who in 2015 became the first African-American ballerina to be named a principal dancer at American Ballet Theater in New York, one of the nation’s most important companies.

Ms. Copeland came across Ms. Wilkinson’s story in the 2005 film “Ballets Russes,” and credits her with having encouraged her to persevere in a field that is still heavily weighted toward white dancers. The two met in 2011, and in 2015, Ms. Wilkinson was present at Ms. Copeland’s New York debut in the lead role of “Swan Lake,” bringing her flowers onstage. Their friendship inspired Ms. Copeland’s recent children’s book, “Firebird.”

Anne Raven Wilkinson was born on Feb. 2, 1935, in Manhattan and grew up in a middle-class home in Harlem, a daughter of Frost B. and Anne J. Wilkinson. Her father was a dentist and her mother a homemaker.

Anne was 5 when she attended her first ballet, “Coppélia,” performed by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. “I remember being so overwhelmed that I started crying,” she said in an interview in 2014 with the dance writer Margaret Fuhrer in Pointe Magazine.

Her mother wanted to enroll her in the School of American Ballet in New York but was told that Anne was too young. She ended up at the private studio of Maria Swoboda, a Russian teacher who had been a member of both the Bolshoi Ballet and the Chicago Civic Opera Ballet.

Ms. Swoboda’s school was bought by Serge Denham, director of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, in 1954, and Ms. Wilkinson auditioned with the company several times, only to be rebuffed. Through a friend in the administration, she learned that the company was hesitant to hire a black dancer because of its regular tours in the segregated South.

Ms. Wilkinson soon enrolled at Columbia University, which she attended for two years, but she persisted in her attempts to join the Ballet Russe, and on her fourth try she was admitted on a trial basis.

She officially joined the company in 1955 and performed a varied repertoire, including the waltz solo in Michel Fokine’s “Les Sylphides,” the Chinese Tea dance in “The Nutcracker,” a featured role in “Raymonda” and ensemble roles in numerous one-act ballets.

Is it me or is 2018 just as bad with famous deaths as 2016?

2016: You either die a hero

2017: ... or live long enough for everyone to see you as the villain

... 2018: ???

(Honestly nothing is going to beat a year where we lost Bowie and Prince)

Ashdown is a big loss, the man had a great history, he was a Royal Marine, a member of the SBS, a diplomat, probably a spy and then an MP, leader of the Liberal Democrats, a lord and the U.N./EU reprentative to Bosnia where he oversaw a chunk of the post-conflict state building and reconciliation process. Even after that he continued to argue for Britain to have a strong role in making the world a better place, but doing it intelligently by looking back at what had and hadn’t worked in the past, not just throwing elections at the problem and walking away.

He even wrote a book on it that I’ve got somewhere, it’s part of what pushed me towards international relations.

At one point he was offered a cabinet positon by Gordon Brown, not becuse the Lid Dems were wanted as coalition partners, but because Paddy himself was that well respected.

He was also a witness for the processecution during the trial of war criminals after the breakup of Yugoslavia.

I liked Paddy. He came across as meaning what he said and generally talked sense. When he changed his mind, he would state his reasons why.

He drank a bit much, had a few more flaws and made some gaffes, but all in all... He was a genuine, stand-up guy who did some spectacularly selfless things.

He will be missed. I honestly wish we had more like Paddy in the Commons today: we wouldn't be in this mess if we did.
