People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.
Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.
To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html
2023 mod note:
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.
This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

Damn, that really sucks. RIP. At least he's jamming with his brother in the afterlife now.
Lots to say on him. Nobody, least of all Ellison I believe, would want his nastier aspects whitewashed. He was a famous asshole who never met a bridge he couldn't nuke in lieu of burning, he dicked around a lot of writers for his anthologies and most infamously groped Connie Willis in public at a Hugo Awards show.
He could also be a warm individual, fought for the Equal Rights Act, was a Freedom Writer and helped a lot of younger writers get their start. Very influential writer, too.
rip Mr Ellison
New theme music also a boxEllison was just like every other celeb, no more or less an asshole than anyone else.
Who are the ones that we kept in charge? Killers, thieves, and lawyers. God's away, god's away, god's away on business... business. Most other celebrities don't publicly grope other Sci fi writers.
There are other ways of being an asshole.
Who are the ones that we kept in charge? Killers, thieves, and lawyers. God's away, god's away, god's away on business... business. He was the guest of honor at a small science fiction convention I was at. Very funny, lots of great stories, and we didn't have any "incidents" because he had efficient and attentive handlers with him at all times. Same year as that groping incident brought up, and I saw people from our con committee nodding their heads and saying that round-the-clock personal handlers was the best decision they'd made that year.

♭What.Another person who, like Ellison combined the traits of genius and asshole. He was a hardline Objectivist who grew increasingly unstable as he aged. But damn his backgrounds. But both Spiderman and Dr. Strange wouldn't have been what they were without him and The Question wouldn't have existed at all.

Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga, Critic of Wartime Internment, Is Dead at 93:
Her death was confirmed by her daughter Lisa Furutani.
Mrs. Herzig Yoshinaga’s discovery of a document in the National Archives contributed to the 1983 decision by a Federal District Court in California to void a wartime verdict against Fred Korematsu, who had refused the blanket evacuation order of Japanese-Americans from sensitive military zones, and the convictions of two others, Gordon Hirabayashi and Minoru Yasui in similar cases.
The document she discovered was apparently the only remaining original version of a 1943 government report that refuted the Pentagon’s claim that the evacuation was a military necessity.
The discovery was part of research that helped lead to a congressional commission’s conclusion in 1983 that the wartime internment was, instead, prompted by “race prejudice, war hysteria and the failure of political leadership.”

"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."This is a very obscure one, but it's personally important to me and probably for a few other tropers.
