People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.
Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.
To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.)

2023 mod note:
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.
This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

Gardner Dozois, co-founder and former editor of the magazine Asimov's Science Fiction, as well as an award-winning writer in his own right, has died at the age of 70
.
Designer Kate Spade was found dead of an apparent suicide at 55.
The last surviving member of the cast of The Wizard of Oz, the munchkin-playing actor Jerry Maren, has passed away at the age of 98
.
Famed chef, author and tv host Anthony Bourdain is dead of suicide at the age of 61.
This one really stings.
I heard about his death this morning. Just now, I got a notification on my podcast app that the latest episode of Marc Maron's WTF podcast has been released. The quest is Bourdain. I wonder if there's anything in the podcast hinting that he was contemplating suicide - WTF tends to be pretty candid and up-close if the quest is up for it, so it's quite possible he might talk about his struggle with depression in the podcast.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur. His Parts Unknown show was cool, and I got to know him and the places and the people that he met. It was a total surprise of his sudden death. This sucks a lot. 😔

ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔|I DO COMMISSIONS|ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔Yeah, I'm really sad about his passing. Big fan of his shows, and really liked his episodes on Vietnam since he showed a side of a country that most Americans think "well, there was a shitty war there, right?"
I ate at the place he and Obama went to in Hanoi.

I remember with XXX Tentacion that the Times Up Women Of Color group called for a boycott of his and R. Kelly’s music for their history of abuse. I’m also pretty sure he’s the first Weinstein effect targeted abuser who has died.
Power of Thor!
The case against X actually began before the Weinstein effect took hold.

Such a long-lived Gorilla. The image of her holding a kitten will always be remembered in our hearts.

Ted Dabney, co-founder of Atari alongside Nolan Bushnell, has died at 81.
