General RIP Thread

Go To

People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.

Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.

To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html

2023 mod note:

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

Looking back, perhaps the *biggest* example of Harsher in Hindsight would be "Given Up," what with that screamed out bridge saying "PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY!"

...yeah.

I mean the lyrics of "In the End" do rather come across as the thoughts of someone who has given up on life.

I'm too shocked. Linkin Park was me and my sister's favorite band when we were young. To hear that he committed suicide felt like a massive kick since i thought that he got better thanks to the band to help with his past problems. And this was just after the death of his friend Chris Cornell. :(

RIP Chester. You always be my hero.

I wonder if this will end all the "lol LP are emo" jokes.

RIP. I haven't listened to them in years but the vocals were always my favorite part of Linkin Park songs. He was a great talent.

And he dies on Chris Cornell's birthday.

I made a thread in the Western Animation thread about her death. Man, and this was right before Duck Tales was getting their reboot. Her career goes back generations, I mean she was entertaining the industry since my grandma was a little girl.

One final coda for Chester Bennington: when the church bells play your song, you know you did good. (This specific church is known for doing this; they did the same thing last year for David Bowie.)

A1 has a child with B1 at 17; that child is A2. A1 also has a child, B2, when she's 40. By then, A2 is 23.

A2 has a child when she's 17. That child is A3.

A3 has a child when she's 17. That child is A4. At that time, A2 is 34 and A1 is 51. B2 is only 11 at this time.

A4 has a child, A5, when she's 17. Even A1 is stil probably alive - she's 68. B2 is 28.

A5 has a child, A6, when she's 17. A1 might still be alive, at 85. B2 is 45. Even if B2 is a woman, she might still have a child at that age (although it is not recommended, and not possible for some women at that age). That child would be B3.

It's possible that A6 and B3 grow up together and are in the same class at school even though A6 is 5 generations removed from A1, while B3 is only 2 generations away.

So as you see, because of the range of years when people have children, the number of generations that a family produces in a given number of years will vary. Even in my scenario above, you could still add another generation (A6 and B3 both having children - you can decide whether they have them at 17 again, or maybe one had their children much later than the other). If A6 gives birth to A7 when she's 17, A1 would still be "only" 102 years old. That's a lot of generations in a lifetime.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.
