Whelp, I'm level 24, I've maxed out all my attributes except for luck, switched out my Dark Brotherhood gear for Glass, and now I'm just scooting all around Vvardenfell on my Boots of Blinding Speed and an enchanted belt that gives me a constant 1 point of levitation. Just doing quests in the hope of one day clearing out my Journal. Gods, there's just so many quests in this game. I clear as many as I can, but the list keeps growing longer.

I'm beginning to regret the effectiveness of my levelling. I've cranked the difficulty all the way up, and I still don't need to use any tactics more complicated than "Apply Ebony Broadsword to face". You'd think they'd at least give me a reason to use the gigantic spell list I've collected by now.

Speaking of Ebony, one more nuisance: Loot that is worth more gold than any merchant carries in either cash or goods. I find myself leaving that kind of stuff behind because I can't be arsed to camp out next to the Mudcrab Merchant and still coming up with less money than it is actually worth.

My favourite home-made spell so far: Command humanoid, magnitude 20, for 3 seconds. I call it "fokking MOVE!", and primarily use it on NPC's blocking narrow passages. I made it after a Morag Tong quest sent me into the Vivec Telvanni Tower to murder some dude upstairs. It was quite rage-inducing to have the NPC's on the lower level tell me "That asshole is upstairs. Do your thing, I won't interfere", despite doing a lot of interfering by blocking the only way to the stairs.

I love this game so much. Once every other decade or so.

Meanwhile, I've just done a buncha temple quests. Down in... uh, Molag Mar right now? Seeing what people did to revamp the necromancer lair down there was pretty awesome. Got some really nice loot, but I'm going to need to visit Mournhold or the Zainab ashlander camp to offload it. The creature merchants have been made to wander and I ain't seen 'em. Found a Daedric Staff.

Probably going to wander off to Solstheim for the Raven Rock quests. I want my Stalhrim already, damn it (and then I can pick up Goldbrand).

I'm beginning to regret the effectiveness of my levelling. You'd think they'd at least give me a reason to use the gigantic spell list I've collected by now.

Hmm, I don't know why there would be? I don't see why high difficulty should equate to "you can't play a warrior as you need to use all the spells too". Not like you can't apply most of the schools to improving smashing faces with broadswords.

I believe a game has good difficulty if it encourages the player to use all resources available to them. If I can close my eyes and left-click until the battle music stops, something has gone wrong. I'm actually using only two out of ten major/minor skills here.

And I think an RPG has bad difficulty if it bans roleplaying by demanding everything. Yeah, you've picked ten skills, but using them all in a fight—or needing to use them all in a fight—is pretty infeasible, especially if they're combat skills. Especially in Morrowind, seeing as how it has so many things that are more oriented around support or utility.

Plus this is a game with a lot of roads to the same outcomes. Needing to use an entire spell list if you're well equipped and specced out for melee would de facto obsolete other options (e.g. Alteration's combat applications being needed on top of heavy armour would make lighter armour unviable, illusion is focused towards preventing getting hit to start with and if you paralysed then armour is redundant or you're not even fighting now etc.). Morrowind has so many redundancies—great for builds, bad for using everything. Ffs, you can do most helpful magical effects by spell, potion, scroll, or enchanted item. And aside for potions, that goes for damaging ones too.

Well, I was hoping to roleplay as a sneaky assassin with magic support kinda deal, but that feels rather silly if just walking up to the opponent and smacking them is easier and quicker.

But hey, I just died and lost fifteen minutes of progress because I was feeling a bit too comfortable, so maybe the game is correcting itself now that I'm walking into higher-level areas.

Tbf, if everything is some degree of viable, it's up to what you want to do. That's like saying that because stealth archery is so good in Skyrim, you have to do it as it's easier. But I don't want to, so I don't.

Also, yeah, if you're now getting into the expansions (or haven't tangled much with enemies that have nasty spells), some of the flaws in "just hit them only" will be a bit more obvious.

So, I've now reached the point where I'm actually able to take on challenging foes, which has done nice things for my gold income, which in turn means very nice things for my stats, skills, and ability to make somewhat absurd items.

I also got Azura's Star and a Daedric Tower Shield from the Gold Saint there, so… need to work out what to put on it. Getting big constant restore health feels too cheesy. Maybe I'll just put some fortify attribute effects on it? Once I can pick which.

And then… hmm, well, I'm still clearing out temple quests so I can get in charge of that and pick up the Ebony Mail (I know I could do those regardless but eh, I'm gonna do it in order), maybe after that I might go do Bloodmoon proper because I want Hircine's spear.

You know the greatest thing about Morrowind having spears? Their reach is really good at poking the blighters.

I prefer using Destruction spells to get rid of Cliff Racers. The fact that they can't miss makes dispatching them real easy. Two hits of Fire Bite, and down they go.

I don't thing reach matters all that much against the buggers, anyway. Since they'll be right up in your face no matter what you do.

It depends! Touch spells and shorter weapons can miss if they've come down straight from above. So, having that extra reach is nice when they land on your head unexpectedly and don't want to waste time backpedalling so it'll get on level ground.

Edit: Well, played some more and… hmm, Kogoruhn was decently challenging despite everything! Even with my new +45 Agility Constant Effect shield helping out, courtesy of Beware the Sixth House. Nothing I couldn't actually handle with all the prep (and disappearing back to enchant some more stuff once I captured a few nice souls from the sleepers), but it did get a bit dicey despite how much things are really progressing here. Need to decide what I'm going to do with the next two souls I have. Dagoth Uthol's soul has 500 charge, so that should be some sort of on-use item to at least take advantage of the extra charges…

The Nerevarine's journey towards being a magical christmas tree continues, as always. Ah well, at least I also have a good chunk of loot to sell (or put in storage, in the case of the Nerevarine quest items and the daedric gauntlets)

Ah, it's a description I first heard in relation to 3rd (3.5 specifically) Edition Dungeons and Dragons—how, in order to function at a higher level, your everyday martial character needs to be decked out in more shiny doodads than your average Christmas tree. Morrowind's every bit as bad as that and worse with how many enchanted things you can be wearing even before you start swapping jewellery to get specific effects. [lol]

It is funny that in Elder Scrolls games that you can play as tough, buff, manly warriors, but to become as powerful as possible, you have to be bedecked in Jewellery.

[down]Good point.

Eh, Bling of War. No, the funny thing is that to be as magically covered as possible at any given moment, the Nerevarine must dress by putting on a shirt, pants, the aforementioned jewellery, a full suit of armour, then put a skirt on over that, and finally top it all off with a robe.

Disappeared while headed towards Akaviir.

Edit: So, progress has been had! I've retrieved the Ebony Mail and been put in charge of the Tribunal Temple. Or, at least, on Vvardenfell. And since I was clearing out so many Sixth House bases along the way, I've gathered a lot of souls, given myself a whole bunch of enchantments (and still have over 100k in cash, guess I'm going on a training spree next while I work out what I'm going to do, Bloodmoon's main quest or the Telvanni. Or maybe finish the Mage's Guild as I want Trebonius' stuff.

The enchantments I've got… well, there's a bit of everything, from permanent night eye on a belt (so not a ring slot that's going to keep being changed out) just in case, some constant sanctuary on my shirt, a minute-long HP regen on the skirt, a short but strong jump buff (which is how I cleared out the four pilgrimages so fast. Boing... ow. Boing... ow), a ring that has 10s of 200 total shock damage and a soul trap effect, another ring that just has a big 30 damage shock Ao E but I can spam it so many times it's silly, an amulet to do an aoe paralyse, an amulet to restore all my stats by a huge chunk because bonewalkers are annoying, open spell for weak locks, permanent 45 agility, obligatory constant fatigue regen…

Enchanting is absurd. I reckon I'm not going to have much threat from… probably anything but Hircine and Almalexia, but that's okay. It's what I want and expect at this point, and I like doing non-can-you-kill-this tests. Plus there's some difficulty stuff I've disabled, would be easy enough to turn that on.

So, I've been playing a bit more, and I've wrapped up the temple and mages guild, the raven rock stuff… and Bloodmoon. I've also been using the oodles of money from having to loot daedric shrines etc. that tend to randomly generate high level weapons (and unique weapons from, say, wandering into Dagoth Ur to pick up a relic) to do… a lot of training. Honestly, given my Mercantile and Speechcraft are now 100 each, I could pretty easily max out another two, three, maybe four without needing to sell anything else. Oh, and picked up a couple more artefacts on the way.

Naturally, I had to fight Hircine with a summoned spear. Wouldn't have felt right to take him on with some other weapon. Need to prove who the better hp-regenerating spearman is. Of course, all this has made my stats quite… terrifying. Funnily enough, yes, I did nearly die/die during Bloodmoon. Once to being freaking swarmed with Rieklings, and another I got caught by a ton of werewolves (Hircine had a terrible time of it, with 100 acrobatics it's pretty easy to just bounce around and only occasionally get swung at). Did manage to save general whatshisface though, that was good.

Edit: My main issue right now is the spear's paralysis being bounced in my face.

But when they do show up, it is often in great numbers. They're also somewhat difficult to hit with weapons and nearly impossible to run away from when playing normally. Basically every other monster in the overworld you need to actively engage in order to fight, but Cliff Racers just kinda force themselves on you.

I'm gonna beg to differ on the Cliff Racer front. Once I crossed that mountain, there were more (if not teleporting, the fastest way to get anywhere is just to bounce over everything. What's jump damage with constantly regenerating HP? :D)

And so, the ludicrously overlevelled Nerevarine has dealt with Dagoth Ur because I was tired of the Blight, and it's interfering with the Rise of House Telvanni stuff I really want to do. I might go do Tribunal next, since I want Trueflame.

Sadly, even with Tamriel Rebuilt, the highest level non-Thieves Guild security trainer is only 90, so I'm going to need to grind out those last ten levels... sad

But I think I can easily go max out the remainder of my skills. And then see about cleaning up my inventory a little for weight limits. I'm not a big fan of using Keening, but I do enjoy Sunder's bonks, and I think a loadout of Sunder, Trueflame, and the Spear of Hircine is nice to play around with. I should also develop some sort of Ao E or target spell, just for convenience; the 600 total damage death touch is quite unnecessary for almost anything.

Really, I might as well turn god mode on since I'm immune to half of all magic, absorb the rest, and have constant HP regen, but eh. It's Morrowind, I'm doing it for the new mod quests. I really do want to find our what all the stuff Uvirith's Legacy has added to its lab is, too... [lol]

Edit: Realised a workaround and finished training up security. And everything else. (Answer: fortify security on your trainer)
