A general discussion thread for all things DC Comics. Topics may be split off into their own threads if necessary. That said, since there's already a thread
for the D Cn U (aka Nu52), this one would probably stick to pre-Nu52 comics to avoid redundancy.
I've always wondered if there's a justification for Wonder Woman's outfit being designed after a modern-day one-piece swimsuit/leotard instead of something that would fit her Greco-Roman mythological background (e.g. Amazons were more often than not depicted as wearing trousers
◊note ). A few attempted redesigns had her adopt Lady Legionnaire Wear for a skirt, but they never stuck. And then of course, there's her pants-wearing design during J. Michael Straczynski's run (courtesy of artist Jim Lee).

Recently read the Vertigo Uncle Sam 2 issue special by Steve Darnall and Alex Ross, US.
Of which I just realized Uncle Sam has the same initials as United States.
Really good, as expected tackled all the dark shit of US history and had Sam grapple with the fact he is culpable in the atrocities committed against people in the name of US imperialism such as the indigenous peoples and black people.
I especially like the moment when the slimey politician was giving a speech and ontop of his speech bubbles was the real speech where he essentially said "Thank you morons for electing me. You stupid assholes let yourselves get scammed and I love you for it, ya pack of dimwits."
Of which leads Sam to the audience "Don't you hear what he's saying? No you do hear exactly what he's saying but you don't care, you want this." For a book written in the 90s, extreamlly timely. Glad DC chose to re-publish this.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Shit. Being Uncle Sam would be suffering. Especially in this day and age.
Poor guy must constantly be getting tortured by the state of the U.S.
One Strip! One Strip! It's actually a bit worse than what you'd expect as the story reveals that Sam was split in 2. The dissenting opinions of America lead to the creation of a new Uncle Sam as the personification of pure nationalism, "my country right or wrong" (he actually says this word for word), and shoving every bad thing under the rug.
Evil Sam represents America's inability to contront its to prop up its own exceptionalism treating rhe country as perfectly okay and ignoring all the problems.
He even gives Sam a speech along the lines of "Look old man you had a good run. War, genocide, sexism, bigotry, a dash of imperialism, but everything's good now, America is great.
Leading Sam to give a speech showcasing his character development which went along the lines of "Look son I done mistakes, so many mistakes but I won't deny or ignore them. I'll face all the wrong things I've done head on. I won't ignore them like you. You ain't it son, you ain't America."

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."So the latest Black Lightning book ended
Too focused on the daughter Anissa at the end, not enough on her dad. This book feels like the writer wanted to write Anissa over Jefferson.
I know BL's daughters are important characters but they really shouldn't overshadow him. Because Jefferson doesn't get a book often enough, this is his first book in years.
It's like if Blue Marvel gets a book but it's mode about his kids than him.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Not as widespread as your making it out to be.
The issue here is clearly the writers want to tackle black female characters but because they are the least likely to ever get a book they have to do so in other ways.
So characters like Black Lightning have to take on the brunt of not just being about them but other characters as well.
From what I hear Anissa getting too much focus also applied to the Black Lightning live-action.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."If I wasn't so incredibly lazy, I might consider making a page for the DC Webtoon 'Renaissance of Raven', solely for the purpose of giving it a negative review. It's not the worst thing I've ever read, but there's just such a shocking lack of anything good. It was touted as an older, wiser Raven (18-19) on a journey of self-growth, but so far all she's done is yell at her friends, go back in time, internally monologue about how shitty it is that her friends haven't found her yet, and then when the Titans do arrive, she's found something else to do (including kissing a guy because he has daddy issues and she likes that, despite the fact that she's dating Beast Boy, who sees the kiss and runs away upset, and she chides him for being too emotional) so she decides to abandon the Titans without meeting them or explaining anything to keep pursuing her renaissance quest to... find out something about her mum, with the phenomenal lines "Those people took days to find me. They could stand to get lost here, just like me."
It's just so weird to go from... any other Teen Titans media, where Raven is famously fiercely protective of her friends, to one where she's dismissive and self-centred and constantly treats them like shit, up to and including cheating on one of her best friends who she's known for like, four-five years at this point. Jesus.
The Titans have just been in this rut where they keep trying to put the Wolfman era back together and then... don't do anything with them
-pour one out for the squandered potential of Titan's academy'
or keep pushing the Beast Boy x Raven ship... for like 15 years now and... They are just boring as pairing in the comics
I know why its popular but that doesn't seem to translate to comics
Its like Damian all over again, Teen Titans got better the moment they stopped trying to do slot Damian into the robin role of Raven, BB, and Starfire
and gave him his own gen to play with

This is an outrage against Luminara!It was mentioned offhand in a few issues here and there recently (DC Power 2024) but it's good to see a concrete mention. Poor Arthur Jr ;-;
Andy better watch out, she better watch out, she better watch out...

The Protomen enhanced my life. It's been 84 years, but they're finally openly referencing Aq's most important and most foundational storyline again.
Well. Better nate than lever.
If Aquaman is "Nobody's favorite superhero", then I am Odysseus. (They/Them) (Troper Wall)Kinda strange they'd do that and not feature Aquaman, though I think he was in a previous issue?
EDIT: Speaking of Aquaman, Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor #2 features Tritonis and has a magic fruit that gives empathy, guarded by a sea monster.

The Protomen enhanced my life.Stopping by here to say I've just read the crossover with Sonic and it was weird when Supes said "a better tomorrow" instead of "the american way" like he's known for.
He who controls the present controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future. The American Way was never actually apart of his catchphrase.
It's attributed to him but he's never often said it it, and for a while now they've been highlighting "Truth, Justice, and for a Better Tommorow" as his catchphrase.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I assume it is a case of Beam Me Up, Scotty! caused by some old adaptation (or the stories painting his as an incarnation as American Exceptionalism, or the WW 2 propaganda that aged like milk)
Superman's Catchphrase is "Great Scott". Okay, in all seriousness, it's "Up, up and away!". Most of Superman's catch phrases are caught phrases.
Like, Truth, Justice and The American way comes from the narrator of the radio show.
Like how it was the narrator who said Spider-Man just learned the hard way "that with great power must also come great responsibility", only for people to assume it was Spider-Man himself or Uncle Ben who said that.
Buldogue's lawyer<Walks in>
First off, I suspect that Real Life plays a part in the change to Clark's Catchphrase. No complaints though. A better tomorrow seems like the exact kind of thing Superman would work towards. Also...
Blue Beetle vs Cyborg. Who wins?
