[up][up] I am curious when they are supposed to show up, apparently their arrival is supposed to signal some kind of new crisis or threat.

Considering Joshua Williams wrote the FS JL book maybe he's gonna do it.

The only Future State stories I've read are the ones about Yara Flor that Joelle Jones and Dan Watters wrote, so I'm not very familiar with Future State as a whole. Where was it established that Jess Chambers' arrival is connected to a great threat?

It was either in the JL book or an interview.

The JL book. As I recall they originally came to the FS Earth during a multiversal crisis,, but stayed behind afterwards.

The last time we had a crisis was 13 years ago with final crisis. They wanted to make dark knights metal like dark crisis or something but snyder said no

[up]I mean, in terms of events strictly called 'Crisis of Infinite Something Something', sure. But it was still a big universe-altering event. So was Flashpoint, but that didn't have 'Crisis' slapped on it either.

The first dark knight metal snyder said because it wasn't doing a lot of continuity changes he didn't want to call it a crisis. No idea why death metal wasn't a crisis it really should have been.

Maybe it was uprooted into a crisis event.

Speaking of Future State, we might have our first casualty of its remnants.

My deepest apologies to anyone who was following Joëlle Jones' Wonder Girl, because it's getting canceled after its seventh issue and its eighth issue is axed.

We'll be seeing Yara in Trial of the Amazons: Wonder Girl issue #1-2, but after that? Who knows, really?

For the crowd saving a click:

The reception for Jöelle Jones' recently-canceled Wonder Girl series with real-life Brazilians might have been even worse than any of us figured.

In fact, one particular Brazilian named Alice Pataxó wrote a lengthy thread on Twitter about Yara saying the character is a stereotype and (I think?) misinterpreted Brazilian lore to a substantial degree. Her thread ends with her saying Yara "is nothing but the white ego speaking."

So thanks Dan DiDio! Because he thought an Amazon from the Amazon was funny.

https://www.ign.com/articles/flashpoint-beyond-preview-geoff-johns-batman

Flashpoint and The Button both had Barry Allen as protagonist, but Flashpoint Beyond doesn't seem to have a Flash in it. Odd, especially since Barry has a movie out this year that seems to be based on Flashpoint and Flashpoint Beyond shares a writer with Wally's book. I guess Joshua Williamson's multiverse trilogy makes Barry off-limits, and I guess Flashpoint Batman won't be in Williamson's third miniseries since it will be publishing alongside Flashpoint Beyond (unless Williamson's third miniseries launches after Flashpoint Beyond ends?)

Edit: the article does claim that "Flash himself has a part to play", but I still find it striking that he isn't on any of the covers and doesn't seem to be a protagonist.

[up] Did they just bring back Rip Hunter's chalkboard?

"5G Averted." *GASP* They know that we knew about 5G!

But really, very sneaky of them to block out certain phrases to keep us guessing.

  • "Fall of Justice League —> Rise of—"
  • "The Legions of Fo... Future, Remember... of the..."
  • "Beware: He'll find his son. Do not interfere."
  • "Who's Hunting the Time —?"

[up] I was half-joking, but wait, was Doomsday Clock still going on when we started hearing 5G rumors?

But seriously, a lot of the phrases are really revving up my speculation engines.

Like the "He'll find his son" bit. I remember reading speculation that Superman's trip to Warworld might be not only to free the Warzoonians, but it's also to do with Jon somehow? Like Teen!Jon might not be our Jon per se?

Like I said, pure speculation, so never mind me. tongue

As a Brazilian, I can say the reception was always a bit scattershot. When it was first announced people liked the pitch (and I think most of us still do like the idea, broadly-speaking) but the problem is that the execution was pretty poor and uninvolved with the actual Brazilian public. Things sort of started weird off the bat with the fact the character is based on Beyoncé for whatever reason (despite the fact she has jack shit to do with Brazil, mind you, let alone indigenous Brazil) and having a poorly explained surname ("Flor" is just "Flower", which aside from being generic also doesn't suit the surnames actual natives tend to name, the aforementioned "Pataxó" being an example of a Brazilian Native surname) from then on it was just wildly misplaced confidence in leaping to Native-Brazilian myths, something that is a touchy subject in Brazil itself (our relationship with indigenous Natives is not particularly better than the US's).

And then there was unforgivable shit like Yara going to São Paulo (capital of the state of São Paulo) and the comic mispelling it as Sao Paolo. Some I just didn't understand, like giving folkloric-creature Headless Mule a clearly-defined-head made of fire, when the most distinct thing about the creature's imagery is the formless fire bellowing from its stump.

There's a english-language article hiving a basic rundown of where things went wrong. It's long but worth a read.

She was? I thought she was based on a real life Afro-Indigenous Brazilian model.
